That was a great hack. Due to my superior brain I knew at the beginning those mats were heavy and it didn't take you long to verify. The install looks great and now you are more stealth.
I've been yoga matting my Ascend, 5mm mats, the adhesive would not dry! 3 mm works just fine! If you want to make templates, I would recommend Walmart paper lawn bags 2-ply 16"L x 12"W x 35"H 5/$1.97 like 70x 32" when you open them up! took one bag to do my fs120 You are one of my Go-to Guys on youtube, Steve, thanks!
Great video. I did a similar hack for my dog when she is in the kayak behind me. I used a ground mat that is about 1/2" thick, used for camping, sleeping on ground. Bought at Gander Mtn. online in a roll. Mine was for 2 reasons, an insulator from cold bottom for her when wet, and to dampen sound of her movement. I did not glue mine in, as it lays well as a rug would. Removable for cleaning and transport. The mat is camo also. Thanks for showing your success and fail, not everyone will do that.
I've been wanting to do this for a while. 1. For cushioning when I'm standing. I think it'll increase my stability. 2. Sound dampener, as you informed. 3. Parts of the deck on my kayak (1st Version Ascend FS128T) are actually lower than the scupper holes, so not all the water drains. This can help even out the deck.
My yak has a nice, flat floor, so I'll just cut a yoga mat to fit and lay it down without adhesives, and without cutting around the scupper holes. I can just pull it out to let the boat drain, shake off any loose dirt, or hose it down if need be. Keep the good ideas coming, Steve.
Luckily for me my SeaDek was already installed on my used kayak. But a couple of years ago I installed mats for a friend on his kayak. We did something similar to your project, except we used those mats women use in kitchen drawers. They have small holes in them but are surprisingly silent. They come in a pretty big roll (different lengths too) and with a pattern, you can cut them into any shape. The big bonus is they come in dozens of colors and patterns in most stores. Why don't I film these things?!
In the coast guard we have these big non-skid stickers we have to put on all of the walking surfaces, and replace them whenever they get scraped up. We put the stickers on, and then seal the edge with “aquaseal”. 3m makes an equivalent marine grade adhesive edge sealant, but i’d imagine most epoxies or maybe even “shoe goop” could work. . The way we do it, you put the sealant around the edges, on top of the sticker so it covers the edge of the sticker, and over onto the boat surface. This makes a water and airtight seal around the edge, keeping it from pulling up.
Kayak Hacks Fishing Nice video, another solution I found useful was the thin plastic roll you use in your kitchen cutlery draws/ plate cupboards. Very flexible, light weight and easy to shape.
I'm new to kayak fishing but here is something else to try. I found a roll of sound proofing Insulation Deadener Mat 40"x24" on Amazon. It says it's waterproof and has an adhesive backing that sticks very well to my kayak so no messing around with glues and tapes. 1 roll was around $10. Hope this helps!
I have not use the loctite adhesive but I've had great results with 3 M super 77 adhesive and with contact cement. Surface prep is important so I wipe things with alcohol and then use my torch to give the surface a light flaming.
To quiet my "junk drawer" under my seat on my Bonafide...I used a thin piece of rubber mat and cemented it with 3M Contact Spray. It's contact cement in spray form. I sprayed both the drawer and the mat...waited for it to dry, and attached the mat. I've been in fresh and salt water several times. There has bin NO issues. One thing I did before I applied anything was to scuff it lightly with a 3M pad...then cleaned the area thoroughly with rubbing alcohol .
Great Idea, especially when the foam pad for my 2020 Hobie 360 cost over $500 dollars. I would however recommend your viewers to use tape and mask out a template for each section of their kayak.
I'd say it's good for the integrity of any bonding agent to lightly take off the gloss finish on your kayak. When you apply like cement Bondo it sticks better to the rough scratchy surface. :) as apposed to the slick gloss finish.
I agree that light sanding might help. You still have the issue of getting things to stick to HDPE. Jackson Kayak just told me that they use a product called Gflex. Pretty pricey.
Nice job as usual 👍🏻 I did something similar on my Hobie PA 12 but I used 3mm neoprene camo waders that I collected from people that had upgraded do to leaking. Just thought I would pass it along.
It's been almost a couple of years since you posted this. My question is how did the 300 Level adhesive work? Do you think that it worked well enough so that the contact cement isn't necessary for the edges? Thanks, I love your videos!

Thank you for letting me use those pictures and for finding the Yoga Mat! Contact cement is working great and I did not end up using that much. Less than 1 bottle!
I like the mat idea . Wondering if bed liner spray out of a can would work ? It does bond to paint which is a plastic . Be interesting to see if it would work !
I would love it if somebody would try it and let us know. But... might really mess up a boat if it ends up being a sticky mess. We would need to try it on a milk carton first.

Ouch. I sold my Native Ultimate and the trolling motor last year. I bought a Native compatible mount for the motor and just clipped it on. In the Native, there is plenty of open space, so I extended the wiring to be able to put the heavy battery at the front to balance out.
It is actually an industrial glue that has found new life in crafting. As long as the glue can breath to cure.. Like that mat you installed. It doesn't cure well when it's plastic on plastic. I glued a dash cam mount to my van. Left it in the sun and it cured great.
scotch outdoor dbl sided tape will hold in water, i havent tried the permanent series dbl sided tape. not sure contact cement will hold up long getting wet. let up know
It lasted for two seasons - maybe more - I sold the kayak at the end of the second season. I did have to reapply some contact cement once on the edges where I did not glue them adequately the first time.

It was a Native Watercraft Ultimate. (nativewatercraft.com/product/ultimate-14-5-tandem/) However, I do not recommend it since, if you flip, the only way to recover is to swim it to shore.
If I lift up a bit, it will slide. If you slide with your weight on it, the material will wrinkle and I assume eventually tear. If you slide a lot, maybe putting a lubricant down on top (vaseline?) would allow for more movement.
Tear apart a sliding screen door and screw the tracks in where you sit and then put the wheels onto your seat! Lol I am not sure if it would work, but a funny idea if someone wants inspiration.
It is the one that came with the boat. I fish a lot and, over time, the material in the seat stretched and is now lower than it was when new. The puts the horizontal crossbar uncomfortably on my tailbone. I have to use a pad now to prevent chafing. When looking for a seat, I would avoid anything that has a horizontal bar as the hinge between the seat and the back where the back of the seat runs perpendicular directly to the hinge. If there is an offset between the seat hinge and seat back, you should be OK as that would keep the metal bar away from your tailbone. That said when new, the seat was very comfortable and is OK with the pad.
@@KayakhacksFishing Not a problem... Once that promoter is in contact with the tape! You'll have to scrape it off. You can use it with stickers and duct tape too. Glad to help ya out😊
Love the videos, Steve. Just wondering if anyone has tried the Non Slip Tool Box Liner available online & at homeware/ hardware stores - very light & flexible, would also glue down easily. Ok, ok ... I hear ya! I'll go ahead & try it, then I'll let y'all know the result :-)

The spray stuff is holding fine. It was the same brand, just a different strength based on the same basic formula. So far so good. The contact cement is holding as well.
