I used an Atra for years. I used Crabtree and Evelyn Sandalwood shaving soap as well and a badger brush. I finally got into DE shavers and other soap/cream options. Your videos helped.

late to the conversation but I used my father's old Gillette safety razor then on to disposables (Yuk) and finally a range of cartridges. At nearly £20 for 5 cartridges I thought bugger it back to DE. It is so relaxing to have a slow 3 pass shave while listening to the radio. It's so enjoyable and economical.

I shaved daily for many years with my grandfather's Reed & Barton Atra, date code A3 (3Q1980), and still have it, in perfect condition. I polished it each Christmas. Started shaving in the late 60s and went thru all Gillette products as they came out, including the dreaded Techmatic. Off and on went back to brush and mug. Still have my original brushes and Old Spice mug. Sure wish I still had all those old Gillette DE handles I went thru! The cost of cartridges drove me back to DE shaving some time ago.

Hopefully no 10 year olds will be commenting on the length of your video. 😀 This was a great video because of the history. I agree with Frank Santora. Do a shave with everything your dad would have used for DE shave back in the day. My evolution (remember, I'm 35): Gillette Sensor, Sensor Excel, Mach 3, Mach 3 Turbo, Fusion, Schick Quattro, Schick Hydro, Harry's Razors (cartridge), Dollar Shave Club 2 blade cartridge razor, Fusion with flex ball, and finally my DE Gillette black handle flare tip. Ken, I know I'm late watching, but not only did you get me into safety razors, but I think the SA 1873 Colt revolver in 45LC is one of if not the most enjoyable guns I shoot. Great shave as always my friend.

The Atra was my first razor and I used it for 20 years. Now I use Trac II when I use a cartridge. I never use the Gillette refills because they’re so expensive. Usually store brands are by Personna and they’re fine. I started shaving in the late 80s and always used a brush and soap. I never had a problem finding Williams or Colgate at the grocery store. Colgate disappeared about 10 years ago. But Williams and Van Der Hagen are both pretty easy to find in drug and grocery stores.

I still could buy a safety razor from Gillette and blades in the early nineties, the same look you showed in the video, the one with the blue handle. I had to buy it in 1990, because that was the only razor allowed during basic training in the army by our instructors in our class. I’m from Europe, Belgium. I think it was also my first wet razor, before that it was electric.

Hey Ken! RIP Roger Moore 007. I believe we are around the same age, late 70's and onwards Gillette drove everyone to cartridge razors. I remember back in 83 or so I used a brush and soap with a cartridge razor, but that stocked dried up. I have the same Atra handle as you have, heck I recently purchased blades for it. Super shave today!!

Great video Ken. I have been all over the place through the years with shaving. My evolution started in the early 90's with the Gillette single blade disposable razor. That's all my dad bought at that time because he had a full beard. I then moved to the Gillette Sensor, followed by the Schick tracer. I then went to the Mach 3, which is still my favorite cartridge razor. I tried the Schick Quattro and Hydro; but, found myself going back to Gillette when they came out with the Fusion. When I retired from the Air Force, I tried Harry's and Dollar Shave Club till finally discovering Wet Shaving last year. I now have a small collection of safety razors both new and vintage. I recently took up straight razor shaving.

Great shave Ken. I've been waiting on this one. I started with a Gillette Trac 2 then i tried the Sensor Excel before going to the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo. The Fusion Proglide & Prosheilds are great but their costs are off the page. There's a special called "EON the James Bond Story" that aired on BBC America before the mini series called "Flemming" came out and it showed everyone of the people who play James Bond in the infamous "rifle scope" shot at the beginning of all the Bond films. It was cool. It also interviewed everyone of them. You'll love the On Her Magesty's Service. It's loaded with action.

Do you usually do two passes with the atra? When I had a cartridge razor, I always only did one pass. I never thought to do two. I think I'll get one when I can afford it.(kinda poor), because you like em. You really have a following of folks who trust in your reviews. Thank you again. And that 6000 sub give away!! Wow , I went from cartridge to straight razor . I figured I save money on straight razor cause I used the 3 blazed last only 2 or 3 use and I'm only 31 years old

Here in Germany 2/3 or even more of men shave with electric "devices" their whole life. Although most modern razors of Gillette are produced here in Germany too and for that reason they are slightly cheaper (but still expensive enough^^). You can also get the DE Wilkinson Classic made in Germany for 3 euros in nearly EVERY store.

I've never actually used cartridge razors. I used disposables to get started just because my parents had 'em and I had no job. When I started working, I bought a Merkur 23C on Amazon because the modern Gillette and Schick carts were pricey. To this day, I haven't tried a cartridge razor, just disposables and DEs.

I am bummed!! After suggesting the bearded jacks to you, I dont think he is selling the shave soaps anymore :( great video man!

Old Spice shave foam was the best. Unfortunately, P&G decided to discontinue it. I still have one unused can, saving it for a special occasion.

Nice video Ken. My shaving evaluation and history is much shorter than yours. Track II, Good News, Fusion, and then DE. $5 per Fusion cartridge and changing them weekly did it for me. Initially, I will end up spending lots of money up front. However, the cost per shave is measured in cents rather than a dollar. I found the tallow based soaps are great for my face and the post-shave feel is excellent. To that end, I found some vintage Old Spice shaving soap and I finish it with Shulton Old Spice aftershave...for that authentic distinguished gentleman scent. Smell like a man!! Goodnight Ken.

I started shaving with a SlimTwist although the contour was and had been available for quite a while. DE blades were still available at local chemists. All be it , sometimes had to buy them in 100s. Usually Wilkinson Sword some times Gillette blues. Probably about the mid eighties, I was given a Contour gift set, it was a pretty good shave, I've tried other Cartridge razors but only the sensor came close to the Contour and the Wilkinsion Sword FX diamond was good too. Nothing Gillette has produced since has been as good.

started with electric shaver , trac 2, had a avon gold hadle that my mother gave me ( wish i still had it ),the atra , sensor excel, mach3, schick st2, Protector, externe3, quattro, hydro3 and 5, FX Diamond ,Quattro Titanium .lots of diffrent bic . now DE and staight razors. from time to time i use cartridger ,

Gotta get that shave soap. Love that Old Spice. Personally, I didn't like OHMSS...I only saw it once. I don't think Sean Connery or Roger Moore could have saved it. RIP Roger. My first childhood hero to pass away.

Diana Rigg was the bomb in that movie, and Lazerby did fine, he just didn't have the look like Connery, or Moore or the others, that gave that unique vibe that he is Bond.

You could have talked twice as long and it would have still been too short..Pam Dawber would reply to fans "back in the day". I am big fan of "The Avengers" but now if you search "Avengers"...All this X-man & Spon Off movie stuff comes up and have you have to dig through pages and pages to find items by that filter. Now it's best to search via specific character/actor names but that sad fact is: they don't make characters like Emma Peel, John Steed, Lt Columbo and etc any more. I love the soaps, the brushes & the balms and aftershaves but I prefer the Gillette Mach 3’s.and holy cow you are a gun guy? Let’s see them. I’m not far from you, let’s shoot.
