REEF AQUARIUM HEATERS COMPARISONS AND UPGRADES (Glass vs Titanium)
Hello to you fellow reef aquarium hobbyists, welcome back to this episode of Craft Aquatic, I’m Matt G.
The weather has gotten cold again here in the Northeast, so it is time to replace some heaters, in the rack and rubble frag system. In this video I will show you the condition of some of the 1 year old glass heaters that I have been using and the new titanium heaters that I will be replacing them with. So here we go.
Heaters are a topic that is ripe for debate in reef keeping, but it’s not that difficult of a subject to address, especially compared to some of the other challenges inherent in this hobby. With that said, there are some key points that I’d like to make, based on my personal experience with them over the years.
We’ll start with this heater here in the 15 gallon rubble section of the rack and rubble frag tank. By the way, I will link to several in depth videos about this system, in the description below if you’d like to dive deeper. This is a 100 watt, internally set heater that is here, simply to warm the water as it flows from the upper cube down to the shared sump. I will be replacing this with an upgraded option.
Here we have two Aqueon 300 watt heaters that have seen better days. I am going to discuss these more in depth, but basically they have been in this system for a little over a year and have began to rust internally. It is hard to say wether any of this oxidation is getting out into the water, but one of the reasons I am addressing heaters now is because I have noticed more hair algae than normal in all three tanks, which can be an indicator of iron or metal in the water. Again, anecdotal, but when we do see issue in our systems, it is always best to performa a process of elimination and some of these heaters are clearly in need of replacing anyway.

What do you use and trust to calibrate any verify true temp in your reef?

That is a very good question. Currently I only calibrate once a year and I use a laser temp gun pointed at the substrate along with an old school floating thermometer. I trust both devices, so take an average reading. I also check against my Hanna digital SG probe, when measuring specific gravity once a week. You know, now that you mention it, calibrating for temp is pretty tricky to do right. How have you been doing it?

What kind of substrate did you use in your 120? Very curious on testing a larger grade substrate!

It is 50lb course coral rubble, purchased in bulk from a local shop. It has worked really well in our high flow reef.

Upgraded to the Innovative Marine Helio dual element system. I am very pleased with this product. A bit pricey but well made and very stable.
