Really nice way to show how you maintain your tank, most people just say this and that about what they do but never show what really is done or when it is done.

I hear you. I wish more people would do the same. We can gather a lot of information, from each other’s maintenance routines.

@@craftaquatic6472 , I know you dose calcium carbonate to control vermetid snails but can it control spirorbid worms too? How much calcium carbonate do you dose or did I missed it? Thankyou for the reply and really enjoy your content.

Garry Cole so the reason it helps with vermatid snails has to do with how they feed, by throwing out mucous nets. As they draw the nets back in, the CC eventually clogs the entrance to their home. Caveat is, it really only works on the smaller snails, since the bigger they are the larger the hole that needs to be blocked. With that said, bumblebee snails will readily finish off the bigger ones as the coral snow helps with the smaller ones. I suppose the CC should help with other reef pests that feed in the same manner. I mix 1 tsp vigorously into a 2 cup measure, slowly releasing it into the tank.

Great video! Interesting to see all the little tasks and commitment needed to keep a larger lps/sps tank! 👍 great tip on the calcium carbonate regarding vermitids snails top!

Maintenance tasks are definitely key to success. Glad some of the tips were helpful. Just be sure to start with a very low dose, to start. 1/2 tsp /100G, if you plan on doing it. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@craftaquatic6472 hey! @Practical Reefer sent me here to check out your CaCO3 dosing as a cure for vermetid snails. can you go into more detail regarding your experience on this subject? Many thanks!
@craftaquatic6472
@craftaquatic6472 3 года назад
@@The1NdNly The main takeaway is that it should be considered part of a maintenance plan, a preventative measure, rather than a straight cure for an existing outbreak. Along with adding bumblebee snails, gluing the mouth holes of larger vermitids, manual removal and making sure new ones are not introduced. Treating once a week will slowly, over time assist in managing the spread of these pests. like everything in reefkeeping, slow progress is key. Best of luck!

can you elaborate more about the use of calcium carbonate, the function of dosing it do's and dont and whats your personal view on it .. its intrest me alot
@craftaquatic6472
@craftaquatic6472 3 года назад
I am no expert on the subject, but I do cover the basic chemistry and function in the video. Basically, I view it as a weekly scrub down for the tank. 1 tsp mixed vigorously in SW. Keeps the water clear, allows the coral to better take up additional nutrients in the water, with the added benefit of helping to manage mucous producing pests. You will find plenty of in depth info on the subject, with a quick search. It’s kind of an old school technique.

Beautiful reef. I see lots of classic equipment I haven't seen in some time. I had a reef keeper lite but it's long long gone. I believe you're using the old style BRS dosing pumps? How long have they been running? I like the electrical tape method! I think I probably do a little less weekly than you but it is similar. My system is older but also more softy dominated with few sps. I do have several NPS that require target feeding and I prefer to feed my LPS frozen food (LRS) if they can handle the larger chunks. Also bare bottom makes it easier. Are you not using the carbon dosing container?

@craftaquatic6472 3 года назад
Hey thanks! Yes those are the original BRS Drew’s dosers, purchased in 2008. I’ve been using them consistently since then. I change the tubes out yearly, other than that, they are still the best basic function peristaltic dosers out there. Far as the reef keeper 2, I have no complaints, so I’m still running it. Also purchased in 2008. I try to model the philosophy of buying great gear and not being so quick to replace it with the newest best thing. This hobby is already expensive enough. Sounds like you are doing some of the same.
