Reefing (hove-to) & a fast sail - in my 20' Norfolk Gypsy.

Putting advice about gaff reefing into practice, whilst hove-to. Then I come across some interesting waves (interesting for someone like me in a 20' boat), followed by a fast sail home.
Thank you to the commenters on my previous video for the helpful advice on reefing.

Nice to see a hood hove to reef procedure. I am a hove to reef fan. I have an older boat over 40 yrs and 33 ft, heavy. I use this method for all my reefing of the main, very few locals around me do it this way. I like the art of a good stall and hove to for a rest or some other small time out for a job or adjustment. Thanks for sharing and a nice boat. Best

What a smashing sail! Great to see that the reefing technique works on Shamrock, that was a pretty good reefing procedure. I can't heave-to particularly well on Naiad so trying to reef her that way is problematic as in the process of reefing the balance changes and she stops being hove-to pretty quickly ! It's getting towards neaps right now so I'd guess that you were getting pretty close to your hull speed of 6 knots through the water at times. I would probably have taken in another reef in Naiad just to see what that did to the speed. I found on my large gaff cutter that often taking in the extra reef did little to slow her down meaning that all that extra sail area was just stressing the rig and hull. Again, I was taught that you should never feel foolish for taking in too much sail. I can't wait to get Naiad sailing, the wind is going to be a bit light tomorrow and the tides are not optimal but I hope to be out on the river most of the day.

@@tobygoessailing Assuming that you were sailing with the tide, then the weaker neap tides means that your speed through the water is close to your speed over the ground which is what your nav software is displaying. Sailing today was brilliant. Force 1-3 wind from the South East, pretty much directly against the ebb. About a foot of sea and it was sunny and warm. Brand new sails and the first sail of the season. I had a blast. I even show up on MarineTraffic !! Naiad's AIS works 😁

@@tetleyk Ah, I see what you mean. Actually my speed indicator shows speed through the water, not SOG. Sounds like a good sail. 👍

Great video! I always enjoy your videos and find them instrctive and interesting too. How do you use the mainsheet traveller on your boat? It seems to be on a rail. I'm only asking because I've just bought a boat with the same set-up!😊

Thanks v much, glad you like them! I wouldn’t really say I “use” the traveller. The mainsheet is simply attached to the rail with a shackle (you can see this on my “Up the Colne” video at 15:10: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Sb2uVZzQmc.html). And the shackle just slides from one side to the other as I change tack… and that’s it.

Great sail! When you heaved-to, was your helm down … and held down? You were on starboard tack, so the tiller needed to be pinned down to port. It probably was, but not evident from the video. Objective is to totally reduce headway while reefing, and keep the bow up to windward as much as possible. Thanks for sharing. 🎉

Thanks! Yes, the tiller was held to port by a bungee cord wrapped tightly round it. I need to experiment with the sail positions when hove-to - eg easing off the jib a bit - to try & get her to point more to windward, as she is a bit beam on sometimes.
