This was really eye opening. I have been studying Arabic for the last 7 months and the Arabs that I have met have been articulate, good natured, considerate , highly educated and exceedingly gracious. People I would be glad to call a friend. It all starts with education and the careful reevaluation of accepted/ugly stereotypes.
This is an amazing video. It put a number of themes that are recurrent in hollywood films in perspective. It devoid of bias and gets to the point without any justification.
I don't think we have unlearned prejudices of blacks, jews, native americans etc. For example, how often in movies you find "the loud nigga good for nothing but cracking jokes" "the thug nigga" "the mammy with a good for nothing husband"..These are all deeply rooted in the practice of Stereotyping...Representing difference will always happen by people excluding themselves from the people they are representing. It is a curse to be born in this generation of humans.
The problem they disconnect us from our history,, I mean Arab are part of the old civilization. We are part of the Semitic and we speak an old Semitic language. We have many things to be proud of .

Plus, Turks have also been similarly villainised in Hollywood (infamously in Midnight Express), so I relate to you guys.
If you actually watched the documentary, that is NOT what he is saying. Did he say anything about Jews? Rather, he said that we have overcome Jewish stereotypes. And nowhere did he say that Arabs are perfect.

Thank you for the Video. It is true Arabs 've been vilified by Hollywood, almost in every aspect, and all those hollywood's actors, actresses and producors are to be blamed for this. These movies are a declaration of cultural wars that unfortuanlty will stay in the memory of the mass, what did we all gain out of this?? more hatred and disrespect to each other. Debating with what you're saying is not "squashing free speech", it's called I have the right to disagree with you and point out why. This is not that hard when you're saying that 400 million Muslims are all "crazy fuckers." I guess it's easier to generalise and throw insults than to see us as people just like you.
Besides, your argument is still weak. This piece is within the context of the popular media. Media are the largest form of pedagogy, and the majority of an audience at an action film would not understand the difference between a Hollywood portrayal of an Arab and an isolated image of an Arab. The point is to cease these stereotypes; such stereotypes contribute to decisions people make in regards to how they view Arabs.

This list of films may also include Blade Runner and Bloodsport. I was watching Blade Runner the other day and realized how badly Deckard treated a person of Arab descent just for being Arab. The film doesn't need to say anything, just induce the viewer that that type of person can't be trusted. In bloodsport with Van Damme, one of the fighters in Arab robes is portrayed as a woman abuser, cheater, and coward. This can be seen in one of the film's most famous scenes where Van Damme takes the coin from the Arab's hand before he closes his hand.

A lot of these stereotypes are so over the top that only a moron would take them seriously. I also noticed that a lot of these stereotypes were in comedies or action thrillers, not exactly thought-provoking genres.

To be accurate, he wasn't an Arab, he was a Khwarizmian Iranian, some said he was a Persian Iranian. That doesn't mean there were no Arab scientists, about 60% of the schoolars and scientists of the the Abbasid empire and Andalucia were Arabs.

Today they call us "Arabs", but that's just because we speak Arabic and our country is a member of the Arab league. The real Arabs are mainly confined to the Arabian peninsula, with minority diasporas everywhere. Today the term Arab refers to a vast amount of ethnicities combined by a common culture, language, and specific religions, mainly Islam with a minority of Christians. Jews have been expelled.

Since you continue to miss the point, I will re-state that MANY (not just the Qur'an or the New or Old Testaments) holy books of various religions have sections that tell their believers to do all kinds of terrible things to other people and their homes. But that doesn't mean that all of those people do all of those things. Your words indicate that you follow a philosophy of hate based more on prejudice than understanding, very similar to the jihadist mentality we are so troubled with today.

He's not "mine" and you're missing the point. I'm not condoning the killings that many misinformed Muslims have performed, nor am I saying that Islam is better or worse than any other religion that thousands have killed in the name of. I'm saying that discriminating against a group of people because of some passages in a book that not all of them even believe in is ignorant.
First of all, I'm not a Muslim. Second, I used the quotation from the Bible merely as an example that many religious texts contain versus commanding men to do stupid things, not because I have anything against Christians (or Jews for that matter). You're right that nearly all of the brutality in the Bible occurs in the Old Testament, but it's still a part of the Bible that many Christians believe in just as much as the New Testament (even though Paul says to ignore the fables of the Jews).
i knowthat Islam is not only for Arabs but we have to understand if the arabs were honest towards Islam they would surely be the best of all humanbeing . remember i'm an arab muslm too
