Reel Review- New Penn Senator 14/0!! 

I really love how penn still makes the old style reels. General Purpose, Jigmaster, Senator etc.

I have both the Penn 14/0 and 12/0........bought them about 11 years ago off ebay and they are the old school reels with the chrome spools. All I've ever done was upgrade drag washers......they are work horses and simple maintenance if needed

I bought an older 14/0 a few years ago at a fishing shop. Paid $150 for it. I knew the owner and he asked, "what the hell are you going to do with that?" I said, "I don't know, maybe hang it on the mantle." He was trying to talk me out of buying it. "Do you want to sell it," I asked, and he said, "yes". "OK, I want to buy it." It's now on my mantle. It looks brand new and has the earlier brass or bronze spool.

Can you do a full review on the 12/0?

Been fishing big game tuna and shark on my penn 6/0 and 9/0 for over 35 years and they are still flawless. Only thing I had to replace are the drag washers and upgraded to ht100 for less than $20. I do service them every year at home and it is a simple process worth doing. Great reels and US made to boot. I agree with you, best bang for your buck and parts are always available unlike china reels.

I just bought this reel and i was wondering how many yd and how many lb test did you have on your Penn senator when you caught that 14 ft hammer?

I know this is quite on old video, but lots of 'recent' post and misinterpretations. Before people will ask again: it's a 14/0 and the max drag is stated in the video. The reason he is comparing the penn with the shimano is mostly about line-capacity. When fishing for sharks in the surf, linecapacity is a very important aspect. Firstly, you need to be able to make a long drop (200-400yds ) with your bait (altough, not always the case). You do this with a kayak (incase people still wonder how he's going to cast this reel). Second, you'll have to counter the long first run from a shark, afterwards, the battle can start. Yes, the tiagra is a whole other reel in terms of strenght and complexity, which is exactly the reason why not of people use them on the beach. Fighting a 300-400lbs sharks from the beach stand-up-style or sitting down in the sand is something else when comparing to being tied to a fighting chair on the deck or, having a rod holder on your boat. Keeping your balance with a 14/0 on lockdown on a sandy beach is not easy, but doable. Keeping it with a tiagra (or Penn international) with it's drag on lockdown is impossible. Intrusion from salt and sand will tear apart a fancy, complex reel. That's the reason the penn senator is so popular. You can take it apart very quickly and parts are cheap. I've taken a 12/0 (but every senator is almost build in the same way) in my hotel room after I dunked it with just the tool kit penn gives you. You could take it apart on the beach for that matter. Same goes for the Penn SSM 950 (the old spinfisher). Dunked it, took the drag apart, rinced the whole reel with fresh water and fished on (for another 5 days on the beach) before taking it apart. I admire complex, new reels, but I like simple, reels that have not much to them besides durability.

I love penns but clearly one shouldn’t compare this to the tiagra. The international is the clear competition to that and priced accordingly. I love the senator though.

Hey Vic, I've recently bought the same reel. I was wondering if you or anyone has noticed that the whole handle+arm ( included the star drag ) move a little freely in and out of the main reel. Almost like wobbling in and out. Is this normal for this reel? When reeling back in the line if makes it a little akward....

But the Tiegra reels drag up to strike at 45 to 50 lbs an full drag about 85 to 90 lbs that's the difference an if ur fighting tunas bluefin u want the oppition yo haul a giant off the botton .great for guys that want to get in big game fishing cheap

How do you get your bait out off of shore. With such a massive reel. I know I own a 12/0 long casts from shore don't happen with a short stout rod

The reel differance is the amound of drag.35LBS instead of 130LBS. 100LBS less than the Tiagra.

How does this compare to a 2 speed reel? Does it have enough leverage that it goes just as fast or what?

Only problem with this reel is it is not two speed.
