Regular channel subscribers may want to skip this one. This video has to do with using parts from a Fostex E16 1/2" 16 track to fix problems with a Fostex E2 1/4" 1/2 track (with cue track), and Model 80 1/4" 8 track recorder.
Cannibalizing an E16 to safe an E2 and a Model 80. Excellent idea! I love Fostex and there are not too many of the E2's around. Been working with an E2 in company with an ASC 6002 S in my studio for years and I love the E2. Asides mentioned the E2 is a pretty rare machine here in Europe. 8- and 16-track Fostex machines can be easily found on the market, but finding an E2 needs lotsa patience.
I used an E16 as my main deck for ten years. I guy named Bill came and replaced a cap or did little things to it to keep it working, and it really did. It worked and worked and worked. Very good tape handling and sounded great. It had a cool remote and it was flawless with smpte.
Like you, I love vintage audio but I lean towards quadraphonic equipment. Had Fostex in past along with several other brands as well. I currently have a Teac X10R quad reel with it's original cherrywood case and my favorite is my Tascam 348 Studio quad reel. Along with 3-4 quad 8 tracks and several quad receivers and about 200 quad lps on reel and cd-r. (transferred most quad 8-tracks to 4 channel DTS cd-r).
I have two of the Fostex E-2 machines. I'm trying to use them to archive a bunch of radio DJ's air checks from the 1970's - 1980's converting them to digital files. I think both of my machines are in perfect condition. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the video.
Dear Bryan! I owne a Fostex E-2. Is it possible to record from both sides of the Tape? I tried to do so, and i end up listening both recordings (one in reverse) at the same time. Does that mean that this machine only records the full tape (2 channels/ stereo) and doesnt record 1/2 tape on one side to be able to record the other 1/2? Or do i just have a bad alligment of the record or play heads? Many thanks on advance
@@EpicenterBryan : A lot of people like this vintage gear i can see it in all comments in most of the videos and the most wonderful thing is that a lot of youngsters like it too :-)
Cool video and channel! Really great to find someone with with your know how. I own a 1980's Fostex Model 80 with all the glory of burned out LED meters, sticky bearings and a Model 4050 controller. The deck has been boxed for almost 26 years and it has great heads, pretty much clean capstan, pinch rollers and tensioners, and all channels are functioning, I have few questions. if that;s OK. The deck has really slow/sluggish functioning rewind and forward motion, it slows down the longer it winds/rewinds. So, I thinking it needs to be cleaned ? What Lubricating oil do you recommend? Also, I see there are many parts places, do you sell parts directly to subscribers? If not where might I find a good source. I'm an older guy mostly doing commercial and original music and have a large library of original tunes on 7-1/2" reels mostly recorded on this unit. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Smiles, have a great one, Isaiah
Hi Brian, I really enjoyed the video, thank so much for posting it; well, I got the same E2 machine that you have and am very pleased with the sound it reproduces, but for some reason when I try to record on it the sound level coming in seems very weak when l switch the source button to compare between source and tape (it's so weak that barely moves the needles), and I really have to bump it up to at least bring it up to "0" db level, any idea what can be done to bring the tape signal identical with the source level ? (maybe l should run more tests, may be l should try other tapes as well but the frequency of sound seems to be ok-ish), thank you
Hi Bryan!, I"m LC...i have an E16E2 that"s in great shape but during a recent move the rotating wheel or knob got partially knocked off. I love this machine and wanted to know if you could help me out with purchasing another one. Really appreciate your video!
Good vid Bry, this is Interesting. I didnt know you were into vintage AV equip. Great service at epicenter, many thanks for all the fullfilled orders. Can a 16 track reel be played on any kind of player? Or do I have to get a 16 track player? I've got a reel but I just want to transfer to CD or something and I don't need to record anything on it but I don't know a lot about it. This was a great video and thought you might know what I need to be able to play mind. What I have is a half inch 16 track reel I'm just trying to find something to play it on
hi i have made a video about the fostex led's and what under the white part you are right 10 years a ago i looked into it the cost for fixing them up would be so high i changed the way i could use the unit if john could fix them it would be more than £20 each tascam ninja (john) if there's any body can fix them at a low price it would be get john is in the eu shipping costs big money
When you pull that capstan off the e16 and put it on the e2 you will only have 15ips high speed. So if anyone eles might think this idea is good, you will also have to have the skill to modify the motor. I straight switch here, and the speed control switch on the e2 will no longer work, and you will only have 15ips
@@EpicenterBryan The only reason I say it is the e16 only has one speed, and i moved the motor over to an e2 before. Only one speed and a dead switch for speed after the move
@@EpicenterBryan Not unless you separated the motor from the pcb board on the e16 and used the e16 motor with the pcb board from the e2. Just dropping in the motor and pcb results in only one speed left on the e2, 15 ips.
