In many Teac/Tascam models, this issue can be caused by drag from the brake bands. There is usually a single central solenoid that controls the brakes, and it can be adjusted by loosening its mounting screws and moving it so that when it actuates (which disengages the brakes so the reels can turn), the armature moves a bit further, releasing the brakes more fully. Sometimes this is all that's necessary. This adjustment does not affect the strength of the brakes when they are engaged. Further, thought this video does not make it clear, removing the reel tables means you have to set the reel table height when reassembling the deck, and this can be a very tricky adjustment. I'd try the brakes first as it's simpler and if it fixes the issue, then the motors were not the problem. If not, then you've only wasted a few minutes and can go ahead and repair the motors.
Great video, thanks. I’ve got an X700R that fast forwards just fine but rewind is painfully slow. Cleaned and oiled all the rollers, polished the guides and the tape path is spotless, tape is good and not sticky back-coated junk. Guess I’m going to be taking apart a motor tomorrow!
Gelukkig heb ik een A7300, betere motoren en gebouwd voor het leven. In de jaren 80 werd er flink bezuinigd op levensduur en betrouwbaarheid, ongeacht welk merk. Mijn Teac is van 1976 en tot nu toe is alleen de tellerriem vervangen. Wordt nog maandelijks gebruikt naast de Akai GX 400D en Revox B77.
Instead of digging around with a Q-Tip and possible damage to the wires, I used a good contact Spray (CRC QD Contact Cleaner) Put a few paper towels under the motor assembly. Spray where you would put a Q-Tip, the gunk just melts away onto the paper towel. Gets more of the gunk build up that a Q-tip can't reach and no danger of damaging the small components or leaving cotton residue from the Q-Tip. Good video and bitchin' tunes. You might be right about damaging the small components, but care is essential ofcourse. So your solution could be better. But mine worked also. But anyway, thanks for the comment!

Thanks for sharing - very effective video. I have acquired three Tascam units awaiting my attention. This video confirms my thoughts on servicing the torque issue. Analog is a fundamental, in this {audiophile's / musician's} toolkit.
Mine is sort of having that trouble. BUT an interesting thing happened the other day. With about 1/4 to a 3rd of tape on the intake reel, I rewound it, it was a little slow, like yours at first, BUT then I saw a spark from the rew reel.....?
What on earth are you doing ? if you take off the brake hubs with the machine standing up , you can remove the motors with the transformer left in place , whatever you do , DON`T follow this ! SMH
Not everyone can disassemble the entire machine. Also in most cases you only need to lubricate the moving parts and motor in place. You don't take your engine out of the car and split the car into 1000 pieces every time to change the oil and repair parts do you?
