The preamps on the TEAC A-2340 reel-to-reel actually sound great for tracking individual instruments, go figure. Can you hear the difference? Do you have any favorite preamps from other machines?

Man, you’re giving away all the secrets! ;) I’ve been using a Sony TC377 R2R with mixer and cab as my guitar amp. I also use it for delay, slap back, etc, but the biggest and most welcome surprise I’ve found in experimenting with it is how glorious it sounds when driven hard. No fuzz/OD pedal can get close to the sound of it! As always, great stuff.

thanks for watching! i was pleasantly surprised by the overdrive on the TEAC, but also it’s enhancing of the bass frequencies. …makes me wanna try some of my other tape machines’ preamps for tracking!

These old teacs have some magic in em thats for sure. Im honestly considering picking another one up just for the preamps. Even if the reel doesnt function, as long as the line outs do im golden!

I just picked up an Akai M8 from the 60's. It's a mono block, so it's got 2 individual tube preamps. This video inspired me to make the purchase. 👍🏻😊

@@MadeOnTape At some point I'll probably venture into recording to the tape but for now I'm going to try using it for the preamps. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

i have been working with the recorded clean signal through varios preamps....Advent 1971 Cassette it gives a delicate flatt contur to the drums and voices and the overall track....also I use a Philps mono reel to reel 1964 tube amazing and DBX compressors por audio not studio 1970s etc...is like once you get to know this way of handling the sound you wont go back to plugins in fact I use almost no plugins just eqs and reverbs delays or flanger and phase efects....good work man love the video

What a great sci-fi-musiczistian you are! Some nice tape decks (TASCAM 122 for example) have also very nice preamps. Unexpected, ahn?

Haha mine are the 688 Pre's. What a sick video, just awesome. I was thinking of that unit but then the sales guy showed me the board price I needed a BOARD and ended up with the 688,But I had pause and type when you mentioned ONE MACHINE it another MACHINE ang go the blind test!! That's genius a sick move Doctor Doom style Great video amazing I actually think about this even out of my dual midi section or going through the aux 1 and 2 outs...I think tape, on tape off...both...insert jacks etc🤐🤣 But I'm really enjoying the process, it's made me realize, it's not obsessive it makes prefect sense. And I think a hardware unit more than pays for itself way more than buying more plugins. It's why I use my channel strip eq and aux...things things just sound done into daw. I await the end, this is a very niche channel, I mock up options often. And reading the comments I am learning and confirming a lot. It's just so much better you can get virtually plug in free in the Daw. Can you do a vid on cheap pedals in inserts Y jacks and auw sends with the Preamps on both?

when you say digital preamps you still used a scarlett or something with preamps right not like virtual preamps without actual power?
@MadeOnTape
@MadeOnTape Год назад
you’re correct. if i had an ADAT setup i could bypass preamps. generally Focusrite or UAD preamps are very clean, especially at unity gain. What i really mean is using that clean preamp vs the dirty ones

Wow I didn't know that was possible or even think about doing that. So right now I am thinking: What if I use the phones output on a re amp box at the same time, do I have a stompbox like the EP Booster? Btw. Great video again.

Have you ever used the art tube pac pro? They have a fixed ratio compressor on there and they sound really good for bass and synths. Also a Roberts/Akai preamp is freakin dirt nasty good if you can pull it out of a working unit.

What sort of preamps does the teac and the tascam have? Valve or solid state? Because that usually is why something may sound "brittle" or "warm." Valve preamps sound better, usually as they have a warm and analogue nature, whereas solid state usually will sound more messy and brittle, but can also be cool, with more modern variants being able to reproduce Valve sound. But anyway. Does the teac and tascam have valves or solid state preamps? I'm asking because I want to get a tape recorder with good preamps that will give the best sound for my metal project.
