Was there on the left flank of the field. Saw myself and the unit I was in a few times in this video. Now I'm still thinking of last weekend wishing I was still there.

So impressive. It’s all so brilliant and sad at the same time. War changes circumstances in ways that usually render the reason for going to war meaningless or contradictory. Spain destroyed its economy and turned the Netherlands into a great power. Exactly the opposite of its goal.

Wish I could have been there in person to see this. I'm from the States and we have civil war reenactments but I've never seen one on such a scale as this.

Look around: I do believe there are some really big ones with the major battles (Chancellorsville, Shiloh, etc). As a Dutchman I'm happy to see re-enactment coming to life in the Netherlands :)

The transition going on from medieval into modern warfare. The sword and spear giving way to the age of powder. All the colors of pageantry; banners flying over armies of well-armored lords and soldiers and ragtag, commoner armies that are steadily evolving into the grand, regular European armies of later centuries. Thank you, Defragged and all the reenactors of this living monument, for helping us remember. Excellent video and the music was deeply moving; it really captured the moment. Keep up the spectacular work!

Thank you for making this video. It helps a lot to imagine how history looked like back than. And thank you to all people that did the reenactment.

Someone should send this to HBO What a series the 80 years war could be with half of europe and beyond involved, having an encore with the 30 years war and the holocaust that happened there in the HRE With Prussia as it's answer pretty much, we arguably still under the influence of what happened during this period of history, with global effect

And with the duke of Alba, William of Orange, Philips II, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Maurits of Orange you have quite a cast of complex and colourful characters.

Indeed, the Treaty of Westphalia still is the way freedom of religion is defined in Europe today.

Great footage. Really gives the impression of how rag-tag armies used to look before uniforms were introduced in the late 17th century/ 18th century. The armour and helmets of the time period looks incredible.

Though quite some look a bit too rag-tag. Re-enactor syndrome 😉

Remember guys, historians keep claiming the Roman Legionnaires obsoleted the Macedonian/Greek pike phalanxes despite pike formations lasting until the gunpowder era.

This looks amazing! Particularly like the flags cos presumably that’s the only way u could identify your folks in the chaos of battle. Great little visual accompaniment to the main series :)

Exchangable, only special thing is the clothing otherwise, it could be any other period, always the same display a bunch of boys with poles and swords and a bit of boom boom and girls running around with water jugs. You see that with Roman events, early medival like Viking high medieval like the crusades especially with late medieval for example the 15th century, have to think of the event the siege of Soest no differance. Over and over again always presented as something "new" and special. Not really as in over 30 years nothing has changed. After the clank clank and the boom boom has ended audiences usually go to look for more interesting displays like the crafts displays where the public stays for hours asking questions but this exchangable battle stuff is as interesting as a pair of smelly old socks.

I get it, it's not your thing, and that's ok. All the people around me very much enjoyed it and had a great time. I'm sure the reenactors had fun.

People reenact to try and recreate some of the feel of history. If you don't have that burning desire in you to do that, you will never understand. I reenacted for many years and I found value in the experiences I had. Sure, there wasn't the real blood and gore of battle, but you could get a feel for the smells, sights and sounds of military life. You can feel the weight of the armor, the uncomfortable feel of wool against your skin, and an understanding of the accouterments in actual use. It was so much more fulfilling than just watching movies, reading books, or making models (those things are great, but reenacting is another experience).

You are correct Tiber... But people would be less enthusiastic if it were for real. I think... It is more about doing things together and have some fun. And there are some who see to it that clothing and attributes are time-correct. Which can be fun and amusing as well. Glad everyone can go to work on monday with both legs and arms... and good memories.
