I’ve never really been a fan of rugby but watching these player/referee interactions is fascinating. The level of respect between these guys is incredible for such a physical and intense sport. Especially seeing how athletes in similar intensity sports (soccer, football, hockey) treat their referees, rugby is a breath of fresh air.

" I went through the middle sir!" And that in protest! Someone in the F.A., needs to take a long look at how rugby players respond and treat their referees and take a leaf out of that book and apply it. Starting with the Premier league in the U.K. , Sickening to watch the contempt and disrespect shown to officials there. Borders on violence at times. Rugby appears so much more advanced in this respect.

part of the way rugby has drilled respect in to players and coaches at a young age and the refs don't take any bull from anyone. when I was in rugby (high school and local clubs) you knew at least 2 things that when you address the ref it's always followed with sir and with regard for the ruling when the ref gets it right, they're right /when the ref gets it wrong, they're right

Simple fix for football. Start of a season. Ref, I have made my decision. Argue and I advance the free kick 10 yards. Argue again and you get a yellow. Argue after that you get a red. Managers would be so sick of having to play U21s to fill in their EPL squads for fixtures that by the end of August that they would get in line. Of course it needs a strong FA. So that buggers that idea then.

I watched Mikey Adamson play for Glasgow Hawks for many years. He brought a standard of quick, intelligent play to the game that he has clearly carried forward into his refereeing. Would that the standard of refereeing he brings was common in Scotland but it isn't. In fact, although he's only a wee bloke, he stands head and shoulders above his contemporaries.

I fully agree with the last comment! Football spoils itself because of lack of respect and lack of discipline. Why don’t they adopt the yellow card as in Rugby - 10 minutes in the sin bin would have an instant and massive effect on the game and encourage players to watch their behaviour. I would also employ this yellow card for disrespect for the ref and if they lose players it will make them think. Also they need to re-examine how they use the VAR - both in terms of the people thy seem to employ to operate it and in terms of the dialogue with the ref. Football has a lot to learn and what is missing is ruining the game!!

I’m not that familiar with rugby rules so I’m confused: Blue #8 was coming off for an injury which I’m guessing knocked him out of the game, so there was a Blue substitution #20 for #8. However, on the same sequence Blue #8 apparently tackled high, a yellow card offense which is a ten-minute sin bin. Blue #8 was injured but had to serve the sin bin and could not be substituted off, so Blue #20 went back to the bench. Why is the substitution (due to injury) not allowed, with Blue #20 serving the ten minutes in the sin bin, since he would be coming in anyway (and Blue team would still be playing one man down for the ten minutes)? Am I making sense?
@Drakcirlm
@Drakcirlm 3 года назад
The substitution for injury was allowed, but because #8 had been sin binned, it meant that the team had to be down a player, thus the substitute player served the time.

Rugby a mans game played by big hard men. They play it hard but with the utmost respect for the referee and the decisions he makes. Unlike football which is played by over paid whimps who fall over at the slightest touch and question every decision made by the referee, usually by surrounding him pushing and shoving and screaming is his face. Good job they don’t have yellow sin bin cards for footballers otherwise they’re would only be the referee and linesmen on the field.

@ofs82
@ofs82 3 года назад
A lot of the time it's not that they've done any major foul, but that simply the team has been committing a lot of minor infringements, especially close to their own goal line. Offside is the main one, because you try to guess when the pass out is coming because so close to your own line you don't have long to react to stop the attacker, and if you jump too soon you get penalised. If there's a major infringement the ref will go straight to a yellow card, but if there isn't, the ref might let a few small infringements like offside go without a yellow card, but if there are too many, he'll tell the captain the team is on warning for giving too many penalties away, so whoever commits the next one is liable to get a yellow card regardless of how major or minor the infringement is. Take the first yellow here, the infringement is relatively minor, but when the ref calls "offside, 10", he knows he's made the mistake, and he knows the team is on warning, so when the card comes he just acknowledges 'my bad' to the team and takes his punishment. The #8 who went off injured, he has hit the guy high, and he knows that that is a punishable offence, if you hit the player in the head with force it's liable to be a red card under current rules; the referee has therefore used mitigation factors to downgrade that to a yellow (no intent to go high, the player he has hit has ducked into contact making it harder to hit him low), so the player carded not only knows that he can expect to be punished, but that the referee has looked upon the hit with a sympathetic viewpoint, while still ensuring that foul play receives punishment, and a fair outcome is had for all. The referee retains the respect of both sides, the team fouled receives a 10 minute man advantage, the team fouling is not penalised for the rest of the game for an avoidable incident.

What rule is the ref referring to when he says 'this man changed his bind onto the ball carrier' at 5:10? I thought as long as he enters the maul legally, and works his way through he is allowed to put an arm onto the ball carrier.
@neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819
@neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 4 года назад
Niele Prior I thought that you had to stay bound to the maul and if you let go of your binding then you have to leave the maul and re join from behind thecrear most foot on your side of the maul. I think that this was the reason for the yellow card being given.

I’ve seen him reffing a few times, he definitely tends to play the advantage more than blowing the whistle like Clancy. He was developed in 7s so he’s reffing style does advocate for that running rugby but can be more messy and not as strict as Barnes or Luke Pearce. But, I get the point that the montage does make him look a bit whistle happy tho 😅
