Today I am showing you how to properly use reference tracks in mixing and production to help get your sound to a pro level. We are going to do this by referencing with Voxengo SPAN, a free tool that can help compare our tracks to professional mixes! I'll show you haw to do this with Voxengo Span VOXENGO SPAN - VST2, VST3 and Audio Unit AU. I'm using Ableton Live, but all of these techniques and principles are applicable to Logic, Cubase, Reason, FL Studio, Studio One, Bitwig and all other popular DAW's.

How Come you do -8db lufs? Is it for a specific streaming service? I always thought for spotify it had to be -14db lufs. What are your thoughts about that?
@dilbydj
@dilbydj 2 месяца назад
That is the worst advice I hear people give. You should master your tracks so they sound loud comparative to other similar music. If you master a house or techno track to -14 lufs it is going to sound super weak next to any other professional track. Master it loud and let Spotify turn down the volume, that way you have control of the sound and the amount of compression applied. Spotify turn the volume down to match the loudness of all of the tracks so that the listener has a more seamless experience. The idea that having the volume turned down on your track so that it sounds similar to the tracks played before and after it is somehow a penalty is absolutely ridiculous. The penalty here is mastering your track to -14 lufs and having it sound like s*** in the club. I hope that clears it up for you. Whoever you heard give that advice, I recommend you unsubscribe from them immediately!

Excellent video as always, Dilby. Another really great referencing tool I started using recently is Oszilloz Megascope, by Schultz Audio. It's a bit expensive, (a bit cheaper on black Friday) but such a great tool for keeping an eye on where things are overlapping, or summing in a problematic way.

Great plugin. I use it on every track. It's been in my template for years.

Thanks for showing your settings! have you looked at TDR prism for the same purpose? It better displays types of perception etc so for example it has the spectrum under “human” energy perception which I found super useful, and can use average/lufs/peak over eachother and get in depth info

In terms of must haves maybe vision 4x as you can get so much info from it if needed. Paired with span/prism/youlean you can cover most bases

Dilby, I have a question, I saw you hitting the -6, -9 of gain reduction in the limiter, this is not a problem for your master?

I have the free version VST3 but it doesn't give the option for more than 2 on the input routing. Is this only available for VST2? If so is there a link to download the VST2 version? The Voxengo site only has the VST3 available.

Sidechain only works on vat 2. I got vst 2 from Voxengo website. I'm on PC btw. But maybe you can use the solution I offer in the video no?
