Refill 1 Lb Propane Clinders Best Way

This is the best method to refill 1 pound propane cylinders. The propane in large tanks is liquid on the bottom but gas on the top. If we refill an empty cylinder from the top we would fill up with gas and it won't last very long. By completely emptying the gas cylinder to be filled and freezing it making it really cold it can accept the greatest amount of liquid propane. Using an adapter to connect a 20 pound propane cylinder to the new 1 pound cylinder and turning the cylinder upside down allows it to get the maximum fill. This newly filled 1 pound cylinder will last a long time.

Good explanations on doing this correctly. I would caution folks doing this to wear gloves at any time you are removing threaded stuff from an LPG tank....or risk getting burned.
@JosephHunstad
@JosephHunstad Год назад
Hi Tom. Thank you for your comment. You are absolutely right wearing gloves is a good idea to prevent a freeze type burn. Also easier and better to handle the frozen propane cylinder out of the freezer. Thank you - Joe

Great instructions, I actually don't bleed off the 1lb tank, but will now, as to maximize the fill. And you should let people know how long you put the 1lb tank into the freezer. I usually do it over night, but I am sure at least an hour or so would be sufficient.

As a Ret 59-82 Ret . USN Para - Rigger / SERE- P.O.W. Inst / VN Solo Advisor ., I have a few questions ----What exactly can GO WRONG ? What MISTAKES be possible and would create a problem ? Of course basic - simple safety rules MUST BE followed. Mtn Me & Aussie Molly Bluel - Deweese, tipi camp W. Colorado. Note - I like to keep " caps on the end of O2 hoses , etc. as not to collect any dust , etc . About USS Ranger 1963 , we has a small explosion with an O2 hose , due to dust from sanding bulkheads in wirk area, settled in hoses. When used , the dust seemed to be the fuel - the 02 moving through the hose = friction and BAM , blow hoses ! No injuries , Amen. Yrs later , 1968, I was shown my first " Fire Piston " by a Negritio in a P.I. village . Very UNIQUE. Fire made by compression ! Think about it .

Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed comment. I’ve read it with great interest. The manufacturer clearly states on the cylinder not to refill them. I have been refilling these for a number of years, and I also kept them except to use them and refill them. So they are always capped. As I stated in the video, the manufacturer does not recommend refilling. It leaves me in a quandary. Thank you.

Thank you Dr. Joe. I am deathly afraid of overfilling the one-pound cylinders. I noticed a small valve on the tops of the 1 lb cylinders, is that a pressure relief valve ? There is also a way to fill the twenty-pound cylinders from the BIG LP tanks that people use for heat. How convenient that would be, I can't believe it would be much more complicated than your demonstration. Thanks again.

So if you file the directions, it takes less than a minute really because that’s when the gas equalizes in the 1 pound tank and the large cylinder. I’ve done this quite a few times successfully. Probably do it outside.

I tried refilling my tanks.. but they didn’t fill very full.. so.. I discovered the while attempting to refill, if you pull up on the little relief valve and let it fill until the propane starts to come out, you get a complete refill…

Exactly. If you go get a refill bottle at a gas station or a grocery store you'll get 3.5 gallons of propane. If you go to a refill place where they fill it untill the liquid spews out the top, you'll get 4.5-4.75 gallons AND you'll pay less.

Yes, I do purge the air out just before I put it in the freezer to cool it down. That gives you the best chance to actually get a vacuum inside of that canister before you connect it to the large propane cylinder. Consider subscribing. Thanks Joe.

Can it explode or can't you put enough in the small bottle to cause an explosion?
@JosephHunstad
@JosephHunstad 2 месяца назад
Good question. The pressure inside of the small propane tank will never exceed that of the large propane tank and when they’re filled, they are the same. If you have worry or concerns, about filling the small one, please don’t do it. Manufacturers recommend that you don’t do it. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

Great video, thank you! I am considering doing this in the event of a natural disaster, but I am wondering what would happen if I were to try and do this without the freezer step. Would it make refilling the 1 pound cylinders more dangerous? Thank you!
@JosephHunstad
@JosephHunstad 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for your question, but no, it doesn’t make it more dangerous. It just won’t feel quite as full. The freezing creates a relative vacuum inside the cylinder and it allows it to take on more of the liquid propane. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

The one pound canisters are well over built. The procedure used to refill the bottles is low risk in my opinion. The pressure in the 20lb tank as well as the 1 pound canisters is low. The tank structures can likely take thousands of pressure cycles. Look up the fatigue life of carbon steel. Everyone needs to assess their risk level and make their own choice.
@JosephHunstad
@JosephHunstad 2 месяца назад
James, thank you for your comment. I totally agree with everything you said, but I had to put some caution caveats in my video description because of my worry of liability. The 1 pound cylinders are indeed very heavy duty and unless there’s some sort of trauma to the 1 pound bottle itself I have, no concern about refilling these. If there was an issue with the integrity of the 1 pound bottle for sure I would just toss it. Thanks again. Consider subscribing. Joe.

This is absolutely STUPID to attempt to do and save a few pennies! These 1 lb bottles are NOT designed to be refilled and pressure cycled!!! This is a perfect case where people are playing with fire and danger and they don't even realize it and completely disregard the warning manufacturers have posted on these propane bottles!!!
@JosephHunstad
@JosephHunstad 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment. With respect to that, please do not attempt refilling them. These 1 pound bottles can be purchased at many locations, including Costco, Walmart, Lowe’s, etc. They are reasonably priced and are intended to be a single use item. They can be safely refilled, however using the methods described in the video. Take care consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.

@@JosephHunstad I appreciate your feedback Joe. People who do not understand metallurgy do not know these things can fail catastrophically in a blink of an eye and put their own personal safety at severe risk if they don't get seriously injured, lose their vision or even get killed. There are jus too many variables involved and people who watch videos on line think they've done exactly the same method but all it takes is one incident, they could lose their life! There is a video posted on RU-vid where a woman died from her burn injuries when one of these bottles exploded having been refilled!

Yes, LWRC, and yogurt contains May milk products, my bag of mixed nuts may contain nuts, , , the coffee is HOT, Don't drink the juice from the car battery. . . . . Where does it stop. Really, refilling multiple times might be problematic, but I have 15 empty cylinders, at $ 6 to $10 each, that's a lot of wasted money.
