I veer sharply off course in this video and discuss the Noodlers Wet-Erase markers as well as both the Pilot Wyteboard and Wyteboard Master markers. What makes all of these special is that they are refillable: less plastic in the landfill, and the glass is more recyclable.

I found this fascinating! I retired from teaching in 2012. I taught in several different rooms and two buildings over my 38 year career and used both markers and chalk. (Chalk was my preference.) I had no idea there was such a thing as refillable board markers. Thanks for the education. Kudos to your student council for recycling!

I'm glad you appreciated it! The refillable dry-erase markers were something I only discovered about a year ago. The refillable Noodler's markers were what I used before that.

I know this has been up for a few years, but I just watched it. I really appreciate the review. I've just started with the Pilot Wyteboard markers this semester and I haven't needed to refill them yet. I loved the note on refilling the cartridges. I'd also note the markers work far better than Expos, especially Expos with more than about four days' use. They erase better. They're just all over better. Thanks again!

I'm glad this was helpful! Speaking for myself, I've stuck with the two types of Pilot markers. They don't need refilling often. And the tips just last and last.

6:49 From my experience, the 3 types of chemicals for removing dry or wet erase inks are: water, isopropyl alcohol, or oil (for oil paint markers). That is because marker inks are usually water-based, alcohol-based, or oil-based. I have come across some whiteboard markers that erase with 91% isopropyl alcohol, but NOT 70% isopropyl alcohol. In some cases, you have to scrub very hard. For oil, i’ve used cooking oil and even mineral oil.
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 3 года назад
That's interesting about the alcohol. I do have full strength isopropyl alcohol. I'll concede I didn't scrub too hard due to concerns over damaging my board. Although...maybe I could get a new board that way!

Glad it was helpful! I always preferred chalk because of the eco-friendliness. The markers I shared here made it easier to use markers. I used to be able to recycle regular markers, but that program ended with COVID-19 as the excuse. So the ability to refill helps a lot.

Great on location video. I had no idea, but love the refillable concept. Wish I had know some years ago. Have fwd the link to this to my 2 daughters who are in education, for when they return to the classroom. Both are shut down for at least several weeks due to COVID-19. Electronic learning only, Pixelated eyes and keyboards.

Thank you Jason for an indepth look at marker. Its an interesting subject in my old job, before i became ill I had a large office with a white board and enough space to get about 5 people in and sitting. I used the board mainly to explain complex procedures or Systems which were easier to explain pictorially than with just words. I didn't use refillable markers to be honest I did not know of their existence & even if i had I'm not sure the company would not have gone for them when you can buy dry wipe markers for peanuts . We also had big meeting rooms that had special broad that could print what you had written on the board , so that everyone could have a copy , they were really useful. I never thought really about the waste , if we had put all the markers used and thrown away in a box then my concern i suspect would have been heightened . I like the ones that stick on the board and the other pilot . I have a white board in my kitchen and I'm still using throw away markers when these are stuffed I'll definitely look into the pilot ones. Cool to see your classroom , your happy in your work which is awesome , i was never happy but i was very good and worked my way to the top which i hated but i was just good at what i did . Sorry I'm rambling now struggling a bit . Cheer for the video !

I'm the only teacher using these refillable markers. And I purchased them with my own cash. Like you, I can't imagine not having a board. But your board that prints what you write sounds interesting! I'll occasionally capture things into Evernote with my cellphone camera, but I never heard of anything like that larger than a notebook.

I personally like the whiteboard markers made by Staedtler and Edding. They offer refills as well. Their refills are almost like an inkwell, you stick the tip into the refill and it sucks up new ink. I've used whiteboard markers from Faber-Castell as well, but the pens and the refills are incredibly expensive. Although they are apparently the best., a colleague of mine has been using the same Faber-Castell markers with refills for years. I really like the Staedtler markers because they offer six colours - although they only have refills for black, blue, green and red (they have markers in purple and orange as well.) Personally, I only use blue, black and red. sometimes purple. In my experience, a lot of students can't read stuff written with green, because it's quite light. So I often use it for highlighting of grammatical structures.
@WaskiSquirrel

I have not seen refillable markers from these brands! You're right, I don't use many colors either. I only have the green marker because of one activity that required green writing. Even when I write using my Wacom tablet, my palette is quite limited.

@@WaskiSquirrel I'm not sure whether they are available internationally. Staedtler and Faber-Castell are actually local companies for me. Both have their headquarters in neighboring cities/towns. Although compared to your town in ND even Stein near Nürnberg/Nuremberg, where Faber-Castell is, might be considered big. And the Edding markers are easy to come by because they are sold in a lot of stores. I have never seen the refills in stores though. The Staedtler ones are called Lumocolor whiteboard marker, and the refills are called "refill station"

@@snoozleblobI could actually order the Pilot ones from Amazon and I think the pack of five with refills is even slightly cheaper than the Staedtler 6pack with refills. This being said, all the language schools I have worked at mostly used the Staedtler ones, and ordered them from office supply distributors. So I don't know about the bulk prices. I live in Germany and I only know about one kind of pen Pilot has cornered the market here. Pilot frixion is very popular among students.

Hi! I really enjoyed watching your video. I’m a pretty avid whiteboard user at home and was thinking about getting the V Board markers. I was thinking about switching to refillable markers like the Pilot V Board markers, but I saw the plastic refill cartridges which disappointed me. I stumbled upon your video looking for an alternate way to refill the markers. Yay!I took a look on the JetPens website and they didn’t have the larger refills for the green and orange colors which kinda sucked. Now I’m pretty stoked that I don’t have to buy new markers as long as I replace the tips and refill the ink.
@WaskiSquirrel

Thank you so much! I agree with you on the disposable nature of these Markers. To be fair, the refillable markers with the bottles are great. But are they truly recyclable? Nevertheless, preferable to the disposable markers.

I'm in the chalk and chalkboard camp. I'm in my mid 60's, so school was a long way behind me when I first heard of whiteboards. We eventually were given a magnetic whiteboard to put on the fridge to leave notes to one another to let each other know where we had gone and when we might return, but it left smears on the fridge and the pens got lost, not to mention that they were expensive to replace when they dried out which they did often especially when the top was left off. No, give me a chalk board or paper and pencil any day.
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 4 года назад
You outlined a lot of the problems with dry erase markers. When students use them, they often just leave the cap off, or lose the cap in just a few seconds. And dry-erase is just so wasteful. Chalk is a little messy, but I prefer it.
@davidanderson3425
@davidanderson3425 4 года назад
Blackboards and chalk were the thing when I was at school. I remember the school teachers wore black gowns (both the men and women) which gave some protection to their clothing. In the workplace, the whiteboard is a common sight now. Currently I am undergoing some training for a new job and the instructor uses a portable whiteboard (on wheels) enabling him to write on both sides. Also, he has a large paper flip chart. Can't say I've paid any attention to the marker pens he uses. Another trick he uses is to link all the computers on our desks by Skype Meeting so that we can watch what he does on his system. I am digressing slightly. From an environmental point of view the number of marker pens thrown away is quite shocking even in a small school.
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 4 года назад
I don't know if the black gowns were ever part of the US culture. Usually they are only seen at graduation ceremonies. Yes, the whiteboards seem to have taken over: they are a lot less messy, people like the colors, and one advantage that whiteboards have is that you can use a projector on them. It doesn't work so well on chalk. Yes, we throw away a lot of markers. I had no idea until I started recycling. And I know I only get a part of the markers from this school.

Thanks for doing this video. I have been having issues with ink flow using the preppy markers. The feed seems to dry out and not draw the ink. Have you had any issues like that? Not sure what is causing it. Using the preppy with a marker or fine tip and the blue erase noodles ink. Thx.

I have not had any trouble, unless I leave them over the summer. Maybe put a new tip in? Or take it apart and soak everything. I've had to do that once or twice.
@chrislj2890

Do they even make chalkboards anymore? I remember when I was in elementary school it was a big deal to be picked by the teacher to clean the erasers in some kind of vacuum gizmo they had. And in high school it was always a treat to see a teacher wing an eraser at a kid goofing off. They'd probably go to jail these days, lol.
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 4 года назад
Markerboards seem to be the direction a lot of institutions are going. One big advantage to them (which I use) is that you can project an image and write all over it. My school didn't have that eraser cleaner. Instead students had the job of going out on the fire escape at the end of each day and clapping the erasers clean.

Thanks for the info! I started using the Board Masters (US branding for the Pilot cartridge markers) this year after giving up on the AusPens. My students use whiteboards every period for warmups and model drawing (NGSS FTW), and I go through a LOT of ink. Have you tried refilling with any other inks besides Pilot? I used AusPens ink successfully in a 1-Pilot marker trial, but have wondered about the cheap bulk inks on some of the Chinese sites. (Note that the AusPens ink trial was in a student marker, so I wasn't able to track how easily it erased compared with the Pilot ink.)
