Today I was excited to find a package from Prospector's Gold & Gems. I sent them several items to be refined, including 2 hand-poured sterling bars with no stamp, and other generic 'bargain bin' silver. Watch to see what I get in return!

Got the silver back today, and I got 17 ounces back, and I am very satisfied with this. Would suggest it to people who have silver they don't want anymore

Also, what a great idea for a business!....one of the most organic, "win-win" small business models I've heard of. almost as if they reinforce sound money principles with every transaction.

What a brilliant idea, especially if you're sending in bags of scrap that take up a lot of space & you get back a beautiful poured bar in .999 that's easy to store. Thanks for sharing the info.

Super Cool looking bars! Wow!....this is one of the coolest services I've heard of. I definitely see myself trying this one day. Thanks for sharing the results of your experience with Prospector's Gold and Gems, Bigstack! I agree with you, 10-20% of the silver you send as payment is more than reasonable.

I bought a couple 5 ounce bars. I don't know if the local coin shop would buy these if I ever needed to sell. I've never sold silver and I've only called the coin shop. I bought the Prospector's bars because I like them but I think I will stick with name brand silver bars.

found this vid now, finally, after you directed me to the Prospectors name, awesome vid and bars. Love how you flipped that "Beast" bar, and it was a beast!.. you have great ideas and original videos. Never seen one like this. I wonder whether foreign junk coin silver that most LCS just want to get rid of can be smelted and refined in the USA, ,,,probably so. ROCK on!
@BigstackMcgee
@BigstackMcgee 10 лет назад
Hey Numis Mm - both foreign and US silver coin can be legally melted down at this point. It is not legal, however, to melt pennies for copper currently. Have a good one!

DARK STITCH 626... yeah, like $5 over spot for every 1oz bar you want back... you don’t get back 90% of spot like they claim, after all the refining fees and premiums, it’s closer to 65% of spot... and don’t think for a second that Your actually getting back the same silver you sent... they just say that so they can charge you a refining fee... the silver you get back is right out of their inventory... it’s a big ripoff

I think prospector makes gorgeous silver bars but I'm wondering about the gold bars, what is the purity ? Is it 14 karat, 18 karat, 24 karat? The squirrel lines on those silver bars is when the silver is cooling or the pour lines like you said, but mainly when the silver cools that's what you get, that is one of the most attractive features of a poured silver bar. I don't know if I prefer this old school rugged silver look such as prospector or the polished look that Atlantis mint gives you.

I don't know why, but it just struck me as funny... "A Silver Pimple!" Hehehehe.... Great bars! However, how did they go from Sterling to .999? Maybe I misunderstood, but I was thinking those other unusable bars were sterling. Did they further refine it?

is there a fee to send it in?
@hugostiglitz4215
@hugostiglitz4215 5 лет назад
Yes they will typically charge you $5 per ounce or an overall 15 to 17% fee
@hugostiglitz4215
@hugostiglitz4215 5 лет назад
For instance if you have a 25 oz brick of sterling silver you will get about 19 to 21 oz of pure silver back.

What they don’t tell you is that if you send in sterling silver to get it refined and you want it back in 1oz bars, not only do the keep an additional 10% as a refining fee, but they also charge you a $5 premium for every 1 oz bar you want back... so basically if you sent them 50 Troy ounces of Sterling silver, you would only get back about 30 Troy ounces of pure .999 silver... that’s not a good deal... 50 ounces of Sterling silver is worth about $750... 30 ounces of pure silver is worth about $500... don’t fall for this 90% of spot bullshit... when it’s all said and done, there only paying 67% of spot price, and your out $250... it’s really not worth it, especially when refining silver yourself with nitric acid is quite easy... you can find dozens of step by step tutorials right here on RU-vid...

Interesting, I did not know about the premium explosion for 1oz bars - I had a great experience myself with the bigger bars.

I was thinking, I'd would've gotten all 1oz bars. But after reading your comment it's good thing he didn't.
@hugostiglitz4215
@hugostiglitz4215 5 лет назад
Most people don't want to bother doing something like this themselves, even a step by step tutorial is not going to be an easy thing to do. Making your own silver bars requires money. You are paying for a service, if you don't like the terms or the fee then don't exchange your sterling silver for pure silver. Prospector does charge a pretty hefty premium over spot price but I have to admit their product is pretty incredible, The 1 and 2 oz silver bars are beautiful. Question about the gold, is it 14 karat or 18 karat or what? I was considering buying one 1 oz skull and crossbones gold bar, but what is the gold in terms of purity?
