Hi Dan, in the old days a black smith put used motor oil on the stove and set it on fire, even better, first heat up the thing and than put it on fire. In the used motor oil there is steel/iron and because the oil burns and heats up the stove the carbon comes out and sits on the surface. This gives a very durable coat that is heat resistant. So if there is an old tractor, change the oil and put it on the stove and torch it. Eh, first put the stove outside. It will look fabulous also.

Great video, got worried a bit about the mineral spirits splashing around. Maybe a fire extinguisher at each end of your work shop would be a good addition.

Yes on the fire brick. The inner steel wall is cracked, because there is an air gap. The air gap does not let the heat dissipate . Keep a small layer of ash on the brick work floor it will act as an insulator.
@pmm422

I would also recommend the stainless steel for the first couple of pieces but for sure do not use galvanized because the off gassing will make you good and sick! Also you can by stove paint designed for wood stoves.

Very good job you did, i am doing same thing but to a different wood stove, takes a lot of work , but at the end looks good, and also to add this, good that you love your dogs, you make them happy, thank you.

Looks sharp man. Id try using bricks on the bottom and maybe the back wall. Keep the width inside for a wider burn area. Didnt look like their was a seal around the door either. Will be hard to control the burn with no seal and the loose air intake vents. I think they used to be threaded. So the more you open, the more air. I wonder if you could fix that one way or another. Save you in wood and make it easier to control the temperature. My 2 cents bro. Lastly, always keep the camera rollin... disasters get views! lol. Happy their was no real damage though. Fire extinguisher may need to be in next months budget. ;)

Briks are good idea, they colect heat and keep worm for long time and keep buildin worm long time, and you dont need burn so much wood. Here in Finland almost ewery fireplases are make bricks, save a lot of wood.... Sorry for my poor english🤭

You can just add 2-3 expanded steel or hardware cloth screens in the exhaust housing to avoid sparks and cinders from going up the flue. The fire brick resist heating, but will reflect radiant heat back into tinder box. IE the outsides will be cooler, and inside hotter. = more complete burning and more heat with less firewood.

Great Tip on putting some Stainless screen in the pipe...but make sure to check it for creosote if your not burner efficiently..

I’m not a “handy man” by any stretch of the imagination. I got a ‘box king’ wood stove for $20, pretty solid shape. Used wire brushes to take off all the rust. I use mineral spirits when I’m restoring older firearms (cosmoline etc...), so I saw this video, and cleaned the stove with it. Came out nice. 2 questions: 1. After the mineral spirits dry I can spray paint (stove bright) with no issues ? I towel dried initially but I’ll wait a while before I paint. I’m in no rush... 2. The gaskets in the sides are drying/rotting away. Any feedback on how I can re-gasket those areas ? All feedback would be appreciated.

Not sure if you noticed but that stove is supposed to have 2 open vents on the front and a fan on the back and it would double the heat out put. It pushes the air between the walls of the stove out the front like floor vents in a house, I’m sure u could grind off the plates they covered them with and re fit it with a fan if your still using this as your heat source and want to get more out of it 👍
@TinyHouseCustoms

The inside wall is cracked so they were closed. The stove was a real piece of crap. Should have found something better. Live and you learn if the carbon monoxide doesn’t kill me.

They make thinner firebrick for stoves. They are used On the stove floor bottom and lower portion of the sides to keep from warping the metal from the high heat.

As someone who restores woodstoves for income. It warms my heart that in 2018(and hopefully still today) there are people paying $250 for literal scrap stoves. Thankyou sir, for helping keep prices high and my profits high too!
@fulmaris33

PS. The fire bricks are essentially an insulant. They also protect the steel which will eventually burn out. Used in modern woodburners because the steel is so thin. The bricks are also used to direct heat out the front of the stove. If you're looking to have radiant heat in every direction then maybe just lay them in the bottom. Depends how thick the steel is on the sides and back. Leave the top unlined and you can then cook stuff on the top, melt glue, set fire to yourself etc. Not sure taking a horizontal flue pipe out the side of the container is such a good idea. You want a decent draw or the place will be full of smoke all the time. You can always stick a damper in line inside the flue to lessen the draw but only the length and angles of the pipe will set the draw strength. That's probably your most important calculation in setting it all up.

What's up Dan I think that I would hook it up and and light one up get her hot and see what she does before I invest the money in the fire bricks. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to line the bottom but who knows she may not even need them

You know the most flammable part of that paint thinner is the Fumes Without directly touching fire. In that enclosed container you were almost making a bomb pretty sure. I'm assuming you made it through since you were able to post the video. 😥 you didn't use much thinner I presume.

The second step part of the stove would be a perfect candidate for a secondary burn chamber. You would really get wood saving and a lot more heat and super low smoke and creosote too. Get rid of the inter steel walls and replace them with fire brick. That is what i did to my stove and it really works great. Good day too.
