When trimming the leather using the xacto knife.. here's a suggestion: before you attempt to use the knife.. take a window screen bead roller (2 shapes). Run the bead roller along the edge (line) making an impression of where you are to trim. This will help you to make a better cut.

These tables are considered antiques in the United States. These type tables were very popular in the 1900s. I have some that are family heirlooms. I am very thankful to see that the tables can be repaired.

I had two almost identical to these that I bought years ago from an older neighbor when she downsized and moved. At that time, I loved traditional furniture, but not so much anymore. I’m really intrigued by restoring older pieces with a new twist on them. For these, I loved the color of the stripped mahogany! I’d love that, I think, with just a lacquer finish to protect the wood. Not sure what color I’d use if I bought new leather. I’ve only got one left-my kids are grown now and when they were little they managed to destroy one of them. Of course, now that I’m restoring older pieces I’m second guessing tossing that one. I probably could have made it acceptable. Anyway, yes, these were a very common type of table in the first few decades of the 20th century, considered formal. Really a cool concept, leather on a table top.
@Spooky1862
@Spooky1862 9 месяцев назад
Yes, I have a coffee table similar to these pieces with gold-embossed leather tops. Mine was made by Heritage Henredon, probably in the 1950s or ‘60s. They probably made these tables, too. Leather-topped tables were very popular during that period. Mine needs a full restoration now, after decades of use in a cat household!

I don't believe I've watched all of your videos yet but I noticed your not using a HVLP sprayer. Awesome work. I made a set of these in my shop but did not have access to an embossing. Really classes them up. I will probably remove the leather from mine and find a place that can do that for me. One of my favorite techniques is inlay and most of my work has some inlay in it. Turbines are great for larger projects such as cabinets that i have redone in peoples homes. Compressors are fine with smaler jobs as a sustained spray is not an issue.
@johnsfurniturerepair

@@johnsfurniturerepair Sorry if i implied it was not. I agree. It is sufficient. I have no idea what compressor setup you use. So would not be able to comment to your capacity. My comment was more aimed in general to my experience and to others i have seen use compressors too small with inadequate cfm output. I will never comment in the negative unless i see something jacked or stupid. From your content that i have seen that would be highly unlikely. On another positive note i commend you for replying to comments as much as you do. Not sure how you find the time. Full time tedious job, filming, loading, editing posting, reading comments replying. I absolutely love your channel! I rescued from a dumpster a small square federal side table probably from Duncan Phyfe era I would like to strip the failing finish and see what the natural wood is like. There is a leather inlay that has that signature yellow/ gold tone to it. I have never worked with the leather before. Could I change the color of that leather or strip it? Or am I destined to have it the way it is? There isn’t anything wrong with it other than the color. Thanks for all your content it is so helpful!😊

Great job with that leather. I think the gold embossing ruins the look though. I'm sure it's traditional but it's so dated and not attractive imo. Having just plain leather would look classier or perhaps a simple bold black outline but not tacky looking gold. It looks so masculine or old lady ish. Your work is stellar though.

I’m so happy I found you here. I need your advice please? I picked up from the side of the road 2 night stands with drawers. One drawer front/face is slightly bent out of shape. So I’m assuming water and a heat gun may fix that back into a straight front? And how do I restore the leather top? It’s cracked and has a few burn marks. It also has little casters/wheels (sorry don’t know the correct name) that are very oxidized. Are these 2 pieces restorable? Is it worth restoring? They were terribly dirty when I picked it up.
