Morton Downey Jr was the only broadcaster to call Al Sharpton a Pimp and get away with it.

No it's not. Curtis Sliwa called Sharpton that all the time on WABC 77 Am radio.

I think Downey and Springer had a lot to do with the later backlash against all the 90’s raunchiness. Today, TV is much more sanitized while also being much dirtier on a different level, a strange media landscape we have today. I miss that he raunchiness and craziness of the 90’s, and I do think the Internet also largely has filled that role. However, I miss that crazy zeitgeist of “did you see that last night?” while also understanding guys like Morton probably took it a little too far back then

You mean Downey and Bey, because "Springer" caused no controversy in his early episodes. Heck even Downey wasn't really "crap TV" to begin with me.

It was worse in the 60s, TV commercials, magazines, mothers smoking while pregnant or holding babies etc. We were damned fools. Should have listened to the Surgeon Generals warnings ~ which started in 1964. But who believes Government?

I have never seen either show. I came here because of one of his ( estranged ) relatives. I saw he was related and thought I'd take a look, I didn't miss anything. Sad, now we have the same type of idiot in the White House.

The major difference is that Springer has a more calm, easy going demeanor than what Morton did. He just leaves the shouting to his guests.
