I remember seeing this on late night telly in the mid 1980's as a young teenager and it tore my head apart. Completely crazed movie. I haven't seen it since, it still looks bonkers.

I've heard that Brando wasn't too keen with John Huston. He clicked better with Elia Kazan, while Bogey was more Huston's kind of guy. Just goes to show that you either get somebody or you don't...

A decidedly odd kind of movie. Montgomery Clift was originally cast in the lead but Marlon Brando was a good substitute.

Montgomery Clift was too mentally shattered and raddled with drugs for this film. His looks had also gone. John Huston had a nightmare filming 'Freud' with Clift so, not surprisingly, he tried to resist Taylor's proposing of Clift for the role.

Pretty risqué even at that time. Originally Montgomery Cliff was cast , but died of a heart attack before the movie began shooting. Richard Burton turned down the role and Brando got it.

People then just had that charisma that was the bling. It's a favourite. Even though hubby Richard Burton didn't rate Houston. Julie Harris is also excellent.

Yes, I've read the novella, and still have it. And I'm Australian! The book is amazing and so is the film (I have it on DVD), so yes, watch the film, it's wonderfully American gothic, perfect Carson McCullers

I have just finished reading Carson McCullers wonderful, and grippingly written novel, on which this film is based. This trailer gives the impression that not only does it not follow the key points in the novel, but it is just a showpiece for the two actors. The character that Taylor plays has been over developed for the film, and the confused homoerotic longing of the character Brando plays, is not really shown. Not a good adaptation of McCullers book.

Yes, I just finished the book and thought it was brilliant - gripping etc as you say- and more so about the human character in general. I think it maybe her best novel and very surprised to read it received poor reviews when it came out. Her writing is true astonishing and especially in impacting so much onto the mind with its deceptive simplicity. Highly recommend to read. A hidden sparkling, haunting literary gem to come across after so many decades. Alas, it maybe a good idea to give the movie a miss...

The film is fine and a good adaptation, give it a chance. Penderton's longing definitely is explicitly shown, it might be very mildly distracting that Taylor is playing Leonora at times but it's usually OK. This trailer really is awful though and I agree that it goes on about how these actors are usually typecast rather than the roles they play in this story.

Brilliant film John Huston directs Taylor and Brando in film based on Carson McCullers novel. Filled with Sexual themes. Taylor gorgeous, Brando at his best. Eerie music and sepia tone film. Not for everyone.

Soraya, you can buy the DVD for about $11 on amazon (including the cost of shipping) or rent it on amazon (that is, watch it on your computer) for $2. Did you check your public library? If it does not have the DVD, you could try an "inter-library loan" (your library would then request the DVD from another library).

60' One eyed Jacks got a bad review yet I loved every bit of it. I could not take eyes off his acting in the movie. "Reflection" is same thing. He acted fabulously.
