If Pope is truly a central personality of their religion, one would expect Christians across the world to be compliant of his decree we shouldn't have seen such resistance in India when Courts decided to decriminalize homosexuality.
The question wasn’t about monotheism. It was whether India, as a culture, hasn’t seen the community building that Western monotheistic religions have witnessed. You missed the larger question of self-correcting institutions in our country, such as marriage, caste, and yes, adolescent safety. The Pope isn’t a central figure to all Christians, but he is to Catholics, and others usually take a cue once the Pope does, while Protestants were always ahead anyway. This is a general question many scholars have posed before. Religious heads, whether we like it or not, played a very important role in steering the society we have today and there’s a whole literature around it. of course the evils of religion in all societies is a different topic. Please read The Child and the State in India by the sociologist Myron Weiner, whom Dr. JP always quotes, and you would understand the role religion played in Europe to bring about near-universal literacy a hundred years ago.
