Are you ready to give your chickens' home a little refresh?
Join Phill and Rob the Gardener for Ask Phill 25. In this video, they walk you through how to clean and refresh the hardwood woodchip in your chicken runs and pens.
You'll learn how woodchip can benefit your chickens by providing a soft surface to walk on, keeping the area dry and mud-free, and encouraging natural behaviour like scratching and foraging. Plus, they'll share tips on how to keep the woodchip clean and hygienic with a simple monthly routine.
So, let's get started and give your feathered friends a happy and healthy home! Don't forget, a complete change and refresh of the woodchip may only be needed once a year.

Perfect timing as i'm just about to take delivery of my new, larger coop. The very same wood chip bags are in the garage waiting to be spread upon completion. I look forward to seeing how much cleaner it all stays. Some fab videos on here Phill, many thanks for the efforts!

Great video Phil. Lovely birds too. How would your advise someone who has their run on flat concrete? Oh dear. Lockdown early this year!

Concrete, while easy to clean, is not ideal. Chickens will are not only used to a softer surface for walking around on, but being able to scratch around and dig a bit will provide them with hours of entertainment while in their run. You can use the woodchip on top of a concrete base, but you would need to find means of introducing good drainage for when it gets wet, either from the weather or from cleaning :)

Really informative video! I have a covered run, how often would you suggest I hose it down - weekly? Should the wood chips last just as long?

Depends on the size and number of occupants! Quite simply, more birds, more mess, more cleaning. Usually every 1-2 weeks should be fine - more frequently during the summer months when they spend longer outside, less frequently in the winter

How do you care for this run in the winter months? Same routine? Does anything change?

Providing you have adequate drainage, no big changes. Hose down, rake through and sanitise :)
