My Frigidaire ice maker model FD1104S p/n 241798211 stopped making ice but water dispenser worked perfectly. I performed a resistance test with my digital multimeter of the water inlet valve as this video suggest. I just want to clarify that my water inlet valve reading was 399 OHMS. This video is great but I am sure if you have a reading below 500 you are asking yourself does this means your inlet valve needs replacing. The video says should read 500-1500 OHMS to be good and little to no resistance means inlet valve should be replaced. I purchased a new ice maker with my 399 OHMS reading and within 5 hours I got my first bucket of ice and it's been making ice around every hour since. Hopes this clarify the OHMS reading concerns. Good Luck and I hope this saves time and money for someone.

Sometimes this test has no continuity using the ohms with tone setting in a multimeter, but using an ohms auto/lowest value setting, you can get a reading.

#1. Thanks for posting these videos and offering assistance. Our Frigidaire RF stopped making ice recently. It is 10 years old. I did not do the electrical test due to the age of the unit. We have a very strong, steady flow of water coming in. I replaced the water inlet valve this weekend but still no ice. Added note that I also replaced the water filter. What should I do next?

Hi, I have the exact same water inlet valve set up, Frigidaire LGUS2642LF2. The ice maker does not fill or pull up water. The ice maker cycle is working, I poured some water in the rear of the ice maker and filled the tray, it made ice. Seems to not draw any water up the fill line, it is not clogged or frozen. I tested the water inlet valve with a meter as in the video. The digital meter was reading over 1000, but also was constantly fluctuating sporadic numbers.The water pressure is ok.

Don't set your multimeter to the lowest ohms of resistance (which is shown to be 200). Instead set it to 2000 ohms of resistance. That way you will get the correct reading if your inlet valve is in the interval 500-1500 ohms.

The most effective way to test it is to just put power to it.
@HabalauOakland
@HabalauOakland 3 года назад
@@smallblockchevy1022 Do you mean testing it carefully by applying 125V house current to the solenoid terminals? I'm testing to see if I get current sent from the ice maker, as it cycled through.
@smallblockchevy1022
@smallblockchevy1022 3 года назад
@@HabalauOakland WARNING: The following is assuming that your solenoid valves are 120v and not low voltage solenoids. Yes that's what I meant regarding just testing to see if the solenoid itself is functional (assuming it is a 120v solenoid, that is). To test whether the icemaker is sending power to the solenoid valve, procedurally it may depend on the type of icemaker you have, but if you have access to your icemaker, and it's the type that the frond gear cover is removable, you should be able to remove the cover and one of the gears, and manually rotate the assembly to see if it's sending power to the solenoid valve. If you do this, and you're not getting power to the solenoid valve (again, depending on your specific system), it could be a faulty microswitch, or it could be that the plastic cam lobe that depresses/activates the microswitch is worn through and no longer doing it's job. Also, it's possible that there's a fuse somewhere in the system that has blown. I'm not a real expert on these, but I am an auto mechanic, and I have repaired and replaced parts on my own icemaker system.

@@joshhud the valve sends water up the back of the fridge you can disconnect that and have it spray into a bucket. If water is not getting through the new valve maybe it's a bad new part. If water is making it through the valve then it would be something further than the connector at top rear of the freezer but if I recall correctly there is not much else involved. As the ice maker revolves it triggers the valve to open letting water flow.

I'm sure you've already fixed this problem by now, but when the plumber shut the water off it probably loosened some mineral deposits/corrosion or some other particulates, clogging the water supply line to your refrigerator, traveled to your refrigerator, clogging the screen to the inlet valve (Where your water supply tube connects to the back of your refrigerator.

+Jay Mendz The ice maker and water dispenser have separate controls and separate coils on the water inlet valve. With the filter installed do you hear the valve still opening, but you just have no water flow? If so, the filter housing is likely damaged and clogging the line with the filter in place.

My water dispenser stopped working a while back but, since we seldom used it, I never bothered to fix it. Now, the ice maker has stopped as well and, since we do rely on it daily, I started investigating the problem. There was no water in the ice cube tray. I first checked for proper water pressure at the supply line valve and that seemed quite adequate. I next checked to see if there was anything frozen and even took my heat gun to it just in case. No problem there. I checked the supply line from the solenoids to where the fill tube feeds the ice cube tray by blowing into it and it, too, seems fine with good air flow. My first thought was that the solenoids were faulty, ordered and installed a new one and the water dispenser and ice maker work still do not work. I was thinking that the next step is to bite the bullet and replace the ice maker itself. Does anyone have any further ideas as to what to try before doing so? I did take the cover off the ice maker motor section but there were no holes to put a jumper wire to manually test it's operation. Appreciate the help!
@smallblockchevy1022

Do you still have this problem? I may be able to help. Also, if you have fixed the problem, what ended up being the cause? I suspect you are/was not getting power to the solenoids. If you still have the problem, perhaps try running power directly to each solenoid and see if one feeds the water dispenser, and the other feeds the ice maker.

My refrigerator stopped dispensing water. After several days on RU-vid University, I realized the following: My freezer was still making ice. I changed my water filter to a new filter and purged out any air in the line. My refrigerator side crisper area water reservoir tank was not frozen. I changed my water inlet valve to a new water inlet valve and verified both for continuity prior to installation. Both the old and the new showed nearly identical continuity confirming a working water inlet valve. And still, no water. Unless both the old water inlet valve and the new water inlet valve both have defective mechanical issues. What are the odds? I am suspicious to that being the issue. I removed the main water line and checked water flow. Very solid and good pressure. I then connected the main water line to the new water inlet valve and turned on the water supply. The water ran through the water inlet valve up into the water filter and back down the return line. That is where the water flow ends for dispensing water to drink, but not to the freezer to make ice cubes. So, something is not "turning on" or allowing the water to be dispensed at the push pad. Yet, water is going up to the freezer to make ice. I am baffled. Problem Solved: I removed the lower front grill to the refrigerator and separated the water line. Pushed water pad dispenser, no water. That line runs back to the water reservoir which was low on water. The water inlet valve fills the water reservoir. Process of elimination, I ordered a new Control Board (the computer behind the Water, Crush, Cube) panel and BAM!! It worked!! After 5 min installation, I pressed the water dispenser pad and I heard the water inlet valve filling the reservoir. Once filled, water proceeded to reach the water dispenser and out into my cup. It was my Control Board all along. $89.00 from Partswarehouse.

My water dispenser stopped putting out water, mainly because i was running it quite a bit to fill up a large water container. I used smaller bottles and paused occasionally to let the solenoid "rest" (cool down) but it gave out about 2 gallons into it. I chalked that up to overuse and I replaced it with a Robertshaw part because everywhere I called asking for a "factory whirlpool part OEM original only" This is what they all tell me is the original part, although it looks like a cheap piece of junk compared to my original part. I installed the new valve in about 5 minutes and it worked fine, problem solved right?? it failed 10 days later. I don't know the circumstances, I was not home when it stopped working. It would buzz a little when the paddle was pressed, but no water comes out. I ordered another inlet valve. This time after installation, I still had the buzzing and still had no water. My fridge is model # 106.56566400 (I've memorized it after searching for parts) 1. Water line in door is not frozen (you could blow through it from the quick connect to the line in the dispenser) 2. Switch in door is working 3. Coil has 190ish ohm resistance on both new valves I installed 4. Water pressure in the line is fine. 5. Water filter was replaced and fills when inserted (you can hear it) 6. I could find no evidence of any damage on the main control board, in fact it looked like new. 7. I checked the voltage on the connector to the water dispenser side of the inlet valve and when the paddle is pressed, the voltage goes to 16 mV, not even a volt coming through. I honestly don't know how to check the amperage. Since nothing worked, I took the new valve apart and pulled the water dispenser valve coil and installed it onto my original valve that failed, but when it failed i could see the coil was failed on that one, so it had an electrical failure not a mechanical one. With the new coil on the functioning mechanical valve, I still got buzzing, but no water. I checked the repairclinic website but could not find the answer. What is left??

But does that mean the ice maker is getting water as well ? I set the digital meter to the lowest setting. Pulled the wires off the first one got 193 ohms. Put the wires back on. Then the other side I got 255 ohms. In the video it said between 500 and 1500 ohms. So does that mean that both are going bad ? Not that it really matters because you have to replace the whole thing anyways. The water works fine. The ice machine works but is so slow.

The coils resistance is so high you likely will not get a tone on the meter. 177 Ohms indicates a good solenoid.
@KoreyKruse
@KoreyKruse 6 лет назад
I've seen other sites that say 200-500 ohms. I have a dual solenoid and the water dispenser is 250ohms and the ice maker is 150ohms. Really anything over 100 probably means the circuit is fine. You're really just making sure the resistance is not zero and not like 10,000 ohms. The zero resistance is the most likely result of a failed circuit.

The coil on my part #2315576 valve inlet reads 350 ohms does it have to be in the 500 plus range you've shown?
@KoreyKruse
@KoreyKruse 6 лет назад
No. 150ohm to 1000ohm is quite common for working valves. Remember even if the circuit is good, the valve can be mechanically broken. So this test can't confirm your valve is good. It can only confirm if its defective.

@@KoreyKruse I'm sure by the time you replied to this post (4 years later) that this issue of his is a thing of the distant past. With that being said, the best way to test these valves is to unhook the outlet, put them over a pan or bucket and just put power to them.

I checked my inlet valve and the multimeter read 20 on the ohms x 10 setting(lowest). Since that's 200 does that indicate replacing?
@repairclinic
@repairclinic 8 лет назад
+SCott MArsh That is likely a good resistance for a valve coil. As long as you don't get an open circuit it is likely good. However, a valve can still fail mechanically.
@KoreyKruse
@KoreyKruse 6 лет назад
BTW - Its not recommended to try to repair a valve that has mechanically failed. Just replace the valve or else you could end up having a valve stick open the next time it makes ice and it will flood your kitchen until you can turn off the water supply.

@@KoreyKruse If they're going to leak, they're almost certainly going to leak as soon as you hook them back up. Also, Sticking open is typically not a problem, as long as you keep the unit clean. I think the common problem is the rubber seals get hard over time and form to their mating surface. When people take them apart and put them back together, the seals moved or rotated and no longer mate properly. Or else they get damaged in the cleaning process. All these issues cause the valves not to seal properly. It's very unlikely that they would actually "stick open" in a literal sense.

The ice maker stopped working so l replaced the ice maker, water valve and filter. Checked the door switch for continuity assured proper temperature in the freezer and check for ice blockage in the water lines. The water pressure is good and water is present at the door. I can cycle the ice maker with jumping the T&H ports but no water at the end of the cycle, that is the problem. What else can I check to get the water to the ice maker? I jumped between the L&V ports and it pops the circuit breaker.......

Bruce Paulson Heater??? In the ice maker??? I looked in the manual, researched the net and here and RU-vid and nothing seemed to explain or fit what was wrong. I’d just be stuck with buying parts and fixing thing after thing until I stumbled on the right fix. Will probably just hire a pro at this point. Can’t afford a new fridge yet.

@@nwadmartin the ice maker heats the tray so the ice will come out when it cycles. I would just replace the icemaker, mine was 137 bucks on Amazon. Much cheaper than a new fridge, and its easy to change.

My refrigerator has water and ice maker, but when I measure the inlet valve coils, i get infinite resistance which indicates that it is bad. I know i am getting contact so what could the problem be?
@KoreyKruse
@KoreyKruse 6 лет назад
It means the circuit is faulty and has a break in it, meaning no electricity can flow through it. You need to replace the valve.
@kevinbigelow8931
@kevinbigelow8931 6 лет назад
I found my problem. My resistance scale was on too low of a scale (200 ohms). I had to be on the 2K ohm scale in order for it to work. I remeasured and two of the coils measured around 500 ohms and one of them measured around 250 ohms. So, this is weird because I get water out of the refrigerator, but I don't get water to come out for the ice maker to my knowledge unless it has something to do with the ice maker itself. Ideas?? Problem possibilities? What next? Thanks in advance!
@KoreyKruse

Sometimes the water line to the freezer ends up freezing up. Can you see up the tube and see if it's frozen or clogged? Or put a flexible wire or something up the tube and see if it's clogged? If so you might have to move everything in your freezer to a cooler for a few hours and turn off freezer to thaw out the line. Another possibility is the valve is broken mechanically, not electrically. So even though the circuit is fine, the mechanical parts in the valve are messed up and jammed so it can't function properly. Another possibility is the ice maker itself isn't supplying the signal to make ice to the valve. You can use your multimeter and a piece of insulated wire to check the ice maker itself. You just remove the front panel. Here's a tip sheet that works for most ice makers: www.applianceaid.com/icemaker-module.php

It's possible for only one half of the water valve to fail, leaving a working dispenser and broken ice maker valve. But it's also possible you have a broken ice maker module. This can be checked fairly easily as well. Just search for "how to test for broken icemaker module".

@stevescott749
@stevescott749 6 лет назад
Per the video there's an assumption that if incoming water supply is of adequate pressure then the inlet valve must be at fault. But, in my case, the dispenser is behaving normally so that would rule that out, no? I do have SOME ice but it's low production. I think it would take weeks to fill the bucket. Could a defective valve still allow SOME ice? It wouldn't be that expensive to just replace it...
