Mine was fairly easy to identify as bad small pile of black dust under the electric relay portion of the temp control device. Also tapping the area would start-up the compressor and fans. It was the series of videos here that made it easy, thanks!
@@GeniusAsian i'm also at the point where i have to tap the thermostat to start the compressor. do i need to do the platinum flattening fix or is there a way i can compress the thermostat to improve its connection? like rubber band it? i can't tell if it'll keep running if i let it keep running. i ordered the replacement part on amazon already but still want to know. i don't own a voltmeter
Mine too Mike. Starts and stops when tapping on it. Started acting up yesterday. I'll be trying what's in the video soon thanks to Genius's video. Hopefully it helps because the part is discontinued. 👍🏻
Great video! I have a very similar thermostat and once I removed the contact part a U-shaped spring fell out. I carefully watched your video and I do not see it in your disassembly. There's also a small metal plate that's touching the adjustment screw in the middle of the contact part. I can see it in your video at first but then you seem to lose it. I'm sure these two parts are not random: the plate that was against the adjustment screw and the U-shaped spring but I cannot figure out how they fit together during re-assembly. If you know the answer please help!
Great stuff man. I have a new temp control unit on the way, but I was worried it wouldn't get here before the one i have fails completely, as it is very finicky at the moment. I had an idea how to bypass it, but wasn't sure, and it looks like I was on the right track. Appears to be the exact same temp control unit you are using in the video, too.
Thank you, I was going to buy another until I could test it to make sure I could get it fixed - but it’s way Easter to run a wire on the two cables that you remove from the control to by pass and test it. Ones again thank you
Terrific video! In my case the freezer is okay and the refrigerator is okay for about 2 weeks after I plug it in then only the refrigerator warms up to 52 degrees F. All the fans inside and out are running. Any idea's what to check next?
if your evaporator fan is running, then check frosted over evaporator; check to see if damper is defective damper in the air diffuser; check refrig thermistor ; check control board.
thanks for your video. i have an electrolux fridge in my garage (10 years old) it gets cold when i start it but than its not cooling afterwards 1) is this a defrost or thermostat problem? if i turn the knob to colder, it will turn on the compressor. if i open the door, it will not start the compressor. if i turn timer to compress, it will not start compressor. 2) do i have to replace thermostat with oem or random one is okay?
Got a new thermostat, worked fine out of the box i tested with multimeter, but once i installed in the fridge the fridge worked for a couple of minutes then it turned off and it will not turn back on, i unplugged the wires and tested continuity on the multimeter and it says its open circuit. Yes the fridge is warm and still it doesn't turn the compressor on, but i can manually turn it on. What do to?
Thanks for this video . My fridge when I plug in the wire the fridge light inside the fridge working but the fridge compressor and the little cooling fan the one next to the copmressoer not running ?
when the light is working, check other wires: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XSspTwABECo.html if you think it is the compressor try this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c98qdSy3qAg.html to test and bypass that fan here is the URL: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HCyDxWifj-8.html
Hi Genius Asian! My 23 year old GE FUF17DACRWH upright freezer runs all the time, very very cold, like 15 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Must be the old mechanical temp control shorting but WR09X10014 is no longer available. What should I look for when I take the control apart to try and repair it? If you don't think I can repair a shorting unit, I might try to fit a generic one in there, like a WR9X499 and use my mechanic and metal working tools to secure it and make it fit. Thank you!
yes, if it is the old mechanical temp control, it is just "on" and "off", you should have no problem fitting a generic one. To repair it, you to know what is the fault. Use a multi-meter to test to find out. Once you locate the problem, it should not be hard to find the best fix. good luck.
Our fridge says or reads the temp. To be 34 but in reality it truly 45. So it's less safe. Also water is leaking out the fridge every day. Is it the thermostate?
I misdiagnosed the thermostat issue initially was an error due to the setting on my voltmeter (yeah I have a cheap one) too high…. After I’ve ordered the new replacement thermostat, swapped it and fridge is still not working! Hmmh 🤨, went back reset and recalibrate the voltmeter and saw the mistake…. Lesson learned the hard way…. 😎
where do i buy the OEM thermostat at fair market price? and what would the fair OEM price be? the walmart one is probably a knock off that will not let me control the temp properly
Great content. Hopefully you can help me. My Kenmore Coldspot 105.50022001 (circa June/2000) isn't handling the cold garage during the winter. The freezer won't get cold enough because of the cold garage temps during fall/winter. I see that there are garage kits for Kenmore refrigerator models manufactured after 2001...but what about refrigerators made prior? Mine is very similar to the one in this video. Can someone please help? There has to be some kind of way to trick the thermostat so my freezer works during the winter. Thanks!
since refrig needs to be very accurate on a very wide range of temperature, it is difficult to have a universal measurement. For example, it is very easy to produce universal standard light bulbs because you only have one 110V voltage to worry about. But Software is configured to read a specific temperature curve, whether the curve of thermal couple is a result of mechanical or electronic, the curve is not linear. Different manufacture may use different control unit, which may measure voltage drop via converter or could measure the resistance. The results would be quite different. So you can not even use the thermo made for one brand to replace that of the other. In addition, even though thermistor failure is common, it is still not as frequent as light bulb, so the technical solution chosen need to be cheap as well as long lasting.
Most NTC thermistors are typically suitable for use within a temperature range between −55 and 200 °C, where they give their most precise readings. @@GeniusAsian
Good video! My fridge is freezing food. Freezer works fine. There is no damper. With power cord unplugged, thermostat does not click when knob is rotated completely in either direction. What test should i do with a multimeter? Thank you.
in this video: for thermostat, watch this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-grURTgO2-x0.html , you need to follow the instruction in the video and remove one wire of the thermostat, and then measure the resistance of the thermostat while turning the knob. If you want to measure from the plug for simple elimination, you can follow this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XSspTwABECo.html
as shown in the video, the copper strip has a hole in the center, the contact is the Platinum contact which filled the copper hole. The problem: there was no connection between the contact and the copper strip. So when you squeeze the platinum circle, since the platinum is soft (it is softer than 14k gold), the platinum expanded to better fill the hole, thus making a good connection
as shown in the video, make sure you measure the resistance before turning on the power. If you connect wrong wire, you may short the circuit and causing your circuit breaker to trip. So make sure you never let hot wire touches a neutral wire.
I know I need a thermostat, but the part is no longer available. Can I match up my old one to a substitute that looks the same, or close to it? I know, stupid question. But otherwise, I'm looking at buying a new refrigerator.
most people would say not to use a substitute. But if it were my own refrigerator, I would like at what kind of thermostat, if it were the old style mechanical one, I will use the substitute, for the newer ones especially the defrost timer is built into the control circuit board or more complex newer electronic ones, I would get a matching onel
I have tad different problem, thermostat seem to not be calibrated properly, keeps temp within 10c, no matter the setting, might have to open it trying to fix
is it too cold or is it not cold enough? Not cold enough may be caused by leaked refrigerant or you could try cleaning the compressor coils: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jMkkoXpHIPA.html , because dirty coils can prevent efficient cooling. You should also check the door seal.
@@GeniusAsian i have the same problem where the thermostat is used to turn on a fan that vents cold air down from the freezer to the fridge. my problem seems to be that even on the "coldest" setting as far as itll crank the fridge stays above 40degrees F any suggestions on this issue?
@@Von_Hohenheim If your freezer is cold but your fridge is not cold, then it is the evaporator fan problem: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HCyDxWifj-8.html
@@GeniusAsian My Fridge is actually too cold, even when I turn the Thermostat to the off position, I can hear the compressor still running. Any suggestions?
My refrigerator doesnr have that dial. Only has electronic buttons onnfrojt of icemaker and water. Fridge keeps getting half frozen or not cold enough for momths now. But freezer works fine whatcan this be
freezer works means the compressor is working. If fridge does not get cold, then it may be evaporator fan. Sometimes fridge frozen or not cold could be defrost problem.
i suspect the walmart part is not OEM and you may have temp control issues. i ordered one from amazon and the compressor is running nonstop. i want genius asian to put a part link in the description for oem part or cheap tested after market part.
@@zentember no longer have the parts. it is better to have OEM part, but if it is not OEM, then you need to know what kind of the thermostat, mechanical or electronic. The one shown in the video is a mechanical one, so the function is based on temperature either off or on, the contact's max current specification is more important.
@@zentember it depends on the manufacturer, for example the Kenmore model shown in the video the official site is www.searspartsdirect.com/brand/0582/kenmore-parts , however you may have to pay more from the official site. So you should get the part number from the official site and then see if you can get it elsewhere. To know which can be trusted, you can read the review other customers left on that particular item.
the thermostat has two terminals: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-grURTgO2-x0.html one is facing you, one is behind the thermostat. To short the thermostat, you need to short these two terminals (this thermostat is a mechanical one). Since it is not easy to clamp the wire to these two terminals and since the terminal is wired to the control board, I shorted the contact on the control board (this is equivalent way to short).
if you don't provide any details, it is difficult to answer your question. Which particular section you don't understand? I have the the detailed index in the video's description, it would take you 2 second to say which timestamp/index content you do understand and which part don't understand.
