*REFURBISHED* Journey and Walkthrough of Central Line 91001-92001 | Including New Moquette and PIS

The day has finally arrived, the first CLIP train has entered service on the Central Line today (24/11/2023). The train ran on r/n 777, and only operated between Hainault (1048) and Woodford. Before returning to Hainault Depot at (1125). There was lots of TFL press officers present, presuming to make a full announcement, when the train officially enters service.
The Central Line 1992 Stocks are going under a major refurbishment which includes new lighting in carriages, CCTV cameras & Passenger Information displays added on the trains, making spaces for wheelchair users & also replacing the DC motors to AC Motors as heard in this video.
Also heard in this video is Adrian Hieatt, who will be the new voice of the Central Line.

After many years of waiting, the first refurbished 92' stock enters service! What do you guys think of the refurbishment? I believe there will be a few more test runs, then some more modifications on the interior and a polish up of the exterior, then it will be ready for full service.

Would the new central line trains be fully refurbished cos how come this new train enter service between Woodford and Hainault they can obviously go on other trains from west ruslip , Epping or Ealing Broadway and other stations and I hope The new central line trains will be fully allocated

The motors being updated is purely because there are very limited spares for those motors and they are extremely difficult to get hold of

I remember when these trains first appeared on the central line. It’s hard to believe that these trains are now as old as the trains they replaced.

Yes, I have fond memories of the 1962 Stock. Sometimes it only seems a few weeks ago that they were running on here.

@@JackTheOfficeWorkerNo, they are not. But the 1962 stock was 30 years old when they got replaced by the 1992 stock, which are now 30 years old themselves. TBH, they look much better now than the 1962 stock did when they got replaced, as they appeared ancient.

I massively prefer the other announcements, especially the sequence of them (i.e the next station, then mind the gap, then interchanges then any local places to alight for). These news ones are good progress, but personally it makes the train sound artificial

Well I'm 99% sure it is because of the previous Emma Clarke and TFL drama. This was due to her making train announcement videos on RU-vid that were intended on mocking tourists and commuters which TFL were not fond of. Therefore if you listen to the pre-renovation announcements on the Central Line they feature Sarah Parnell (my guess is she was chosen because of how similar her voice is to Emma Clarke's? Though that is pure speculation) who voices the changes and additions to Emma Clarke's previous announcements most notably `change for the Elizabeth Line` to all the relevant stations along the Central Line.

It depends , the motors sound good, but the old ones were really nice . These sound like S stock and and class 378 overground stock mixed together. Classic bombadier motor and gearbox sounds. You will probably here them better if you went on them

The refurbished central line train sounds like the 2009 and S7/8 stock. The train also have tinted windows.

Great to see a moquette that harmonises better with the red theme of the Central line better than the harsh blue of Barman that plagued so many lines. I think it looks great, and gives the stock a more unique identity. Replacing the screens at the end of the trains was much needed too, they were hard to read in even the best conditions. A bit torn on the new announcements, but the improvement in audio fidelity was much needed.

Agreed regarding the doors. The door alarm has been modified so it keeps playing until the doors have closed fully. Also when opening the 3 tone alarm which was used when the 92 stock initially entered service. I will definitely miss the old announcements, but I do think the new ones are much better, in terms of clarity and quality of information.

For people wondering why they changed the announcements, I believe they were no longer compliant under the RVAR legislations. Adrian Hieatt has been used in both this case and the new Bakerloo Line announcements as he works for TFL, thus cheaper and convenient when announcements need updating. Sure they do sound slightly robotic, but they’re clear and informative and would help people with a sight impairment.

It’s not as bad as I was expecting, but the central line was my favourite because of the motors and nice Emma Clarke announcements. I’m gonna miss the unrefurbished trains for sure

@eastlancsesteem well, the central line is to get the new trains too. But tfl haven't got funding for them yet, so it isn't confirmed for a while probably. Bakerloo should get them next but again funding not confirmed, so we don't know how long the wait will be. I think the Waterloo might have different motors to the central line 1992 original. Maybe they aren't as unreliable. The W&C isn't considered as important as the central so the case to upgrade them is gonna be less valuable. Plus a pain hoisting them out of the depot 🤣

I understand they had to record new announcements. But they should have sticked to Sarah Parnell, but in S stock, or 09 stock style. They are clean and sound very professional.

why would they do that? adrian is a tfl employee so he recorded these during his working hours, with tfl probably having to pay way less then they wouldve paid sarah parnell

​@B9TL205 Ok, so that ac motor sound looks very familiar. That ac motor is just like the circle, Hammersmith and city, Metropolitan, and the Victoria lines from the S stock for s7/8. Now this is not cool. I think the dc motor sound is really much better than the ac motor sound.

I think TfL did a silly job at the accessibility they could’ve put folding seats there. Also it does not seem like a British train anymore it’s like really robotic and loud like the American subway.

Didn't even know this was a thing. Scrolling LED displays are painfully dated at this point, missed opportunity to retrofit screens imo. Looks cool, gonna miss the old voice though

Oh wow!!!! So it has the bombadier vvf drive, and some sort of new gearbox set up. It sounds similar to a mix of 378 and S stock.

I think they did the MITRAC TC1400 propulsion with the AC PMSM motors that were put on the S stock. Motors are lighter in weight compared to the traditional induction motor and PMSM technology delivers energy savings.

@@bb-3653 It would be interesting to find out for sure. I know Bombardier was one of the first companies to start using PMSM motors as an option around 2010 and the quieter inverter is one giveaway on it. Yet with Alstom taking over Bombardier, a lot of prior resources online are no longer available. I can't say 100% for sure if it is a PMSM based system but it is a guess.

@tomwujek4867 it's weird because depending on where you go around the world, some inverters sound louder than others and I don't think loud always =inefficient it just depends on motor function i think. The super quiet inverters are not really My favourite though. Don't sound that good whereas class 385s hitachi inverters and CAF units are nice. Some CAF units accross the world use some SiC motors or PMSM made by mitsibuishi , and sound alot cooler than aventra fleet. Bombadier (alstom) from Germany hace some nice sounding trains. Perhaps pmsm isn't always the solution as some of their newer trains don't always use the super quiet inverter method. I guess every method has its pros and cons and Infrustructure is different hence some being louder than others . The more audiable ones are alot better sounding Have you heard of the talent 2, 442 trains from Germany , I'll link you a quick sound clip of them. they sound very similar to class 378 overground stock. I'm not from UK but 1. i hate the new train propulstion cuz it sounds like S stock while i don't like it 2. They replaced Godly Emma Clarke Announcements with Some Random Guy and they sounds terrible. I can already imagine how this guy gonna sounds on Bakerloo line but i like new 1992 (My opinion) #BringBackEmmaClarkeAnnoucements

This might just be the best train to listen to yet. Sounds like a mix of the Victoria/District line with that classic central line motor.

They coud have done abit more on the front end, LED head/tail lights like the one on the Victoria line giving drivers better visibility give the stock a more modern an crisp apperence with a larger destination display, On the side a red stripe below the window like the new piccadilly train has.

by 5PM the day of their inauguration, the ceilings to the 1st new D78er's smoking cars were already just as yellow as those to their CO/CP and R counterparts were

They may actually be overall faster though as I've noticed some fast doors slow down at the very end of opening or closing.

the interior of both 1992 stock second refurbisb and 1996 stock refurbish are the best refurbishment I ever seen, hard to tell which one is better

@@8834 No I ain’t. They will literally dislike any change on the deep tube regardless if they are good or not. They like the boring same old-same old. Those people are called elitists and troomers (train enthusiast version of boomers). I love some old trains, but the Central, Bakerloo and Piccadilly need changes because their trains are bad. I hope the new Piccadilly trains sound good and not bad.

It still does sound distinctly like the Central. They're meant to be getting AC motors, aren't they? This sounds different (not as unhinged as the current 92 stock when it pulls away), to my ears at least

those refurbished trains aren't getting aircon, however the new piccadilly line trains will. and that model is meant to also arrive on the central and bakerloo if funding is found.

Perhaps its because maybe some doors might close for an extended period at some stations, which is probably more likely to happen on the central line with the more rural sections compared to other lines such as the victoria line, which is entirely underground

Perhaps a much needed upgrade for the 92 stock washing machines! Mixed opinions on the new moquette design tho, would have been nicer if they reworked the entire interior imo!
