I agree 100% as well...if I had a buck with unique scars or whatnot, I'd want it on the wall the way it was when it was running the woods. Amazing how some guys get so caught up in "reputation" that they lose so many good and rather easy jobs.
I like the way you do business and your reputation speaks for itself!! 100% right by asking the customer what they want! Good luck with everything my friend!
100% correct. I had a Hog with a large scar on his face. I told the Taxidermist I don't want him to cover it up. 4 months and $700 latter I get the mount and he painted over the scar. I'll never go back to him.
I try & do what the customer wants. When it comes to messed up stuff.I tell them I can work a little magic...but I can't work miracles. But we can get close. A hapy customer is a Repeat customer & will bring his/her friends too. Nice video
Hey Daniel, I think your work is fantastic. Also, if your customer ask you to do the mount the way it looked before it was harvested, is awesome. If he asked you to fix something that's doesn't look to good and you do it, makes you a hell of an artist. Here's an idea. Next year when your customer's bring in their mounts, sell them a dollar raffle ticket. The raffle ticket will be drawn before the next deer season for a free mount. It would drum up some more business and the money from the raffle tickets should cover your cost for the mount. I know I would buy at least 5 tickets. Love your channel and videos, especially your work. Take care and be safe.
Wasn’t expecting a video on the topic. Lol! An email would have sufficed! Thanks for addressing the topic in detail and giving your honest opinion. I personally haven’t come across a deformed deer but do believe in doing what the client wants. Keep up the good work.
Any time you have anything like this you think of brother let me know!! I love talking about topics like this because it gives folks great perspective as to what they can expect out there in the world. Thanks for the idea!
I agree with what the customer wants is what they get and it's amazing to me how many don't notice anomalies on deer because they're stuck on the head gear usually!
You are exactly right. We are cut from the same stone. I Love doing someone's first duck and seeing that glitter in the kids eye when he gets it back. I remember mounting a 5 lb bass a little girl caught with a Barbie zebco fishing rod and it was one of the most proudest days of my life to hand that mount back to her. She was grinning ear to ear and could not be prouder. I also give a discount on someone's first bass, duck or anything else that they won't mounted. I had a guy bring me a duck that has been sitting in the freezer for 10 years. Nobody else would touch it and the guy came to me, it was the last duck that the guy's dog had retrieved for him before he had to put the dog down. He had that dog longer than he had his wife and so needless to say it was an emotional event for him but I got it done. The guy cried a river of tears when I handed that mount to him and those are the moments that I do taxidermy for
that's the reputation taxidermists gets when they charge $700-$900 a head in my opinion I've done taxidermy in the past and were leading into again I do what the customer wants 100 percent that customer is getting you more work as soon as they leave your shop the taxidermist with the 700-900 hundred a head is more concerned about money than the value of his customer keep up the good work you are doing it for the right reason from that 70 year old man with his first ever buck to the little kid with his first deer that's what we do here keep rocking it Buddy and never look back no regrets!!!!!
I agree the customer is right, they are paying the bill. I once mounted a buck that was shot with a deer slug through both eyes and asked if I could save it because he wanted to use his cape and did what he wanted,he was very pleased with the results
The first buck I ever shot that was not a spike was shoot in the back of head. Taxidermist was okay with euro mounting just had to exopy some wood in brain cavity to mount.
Your absolutely right , this past deer season I shot a10 pointer with a whitish pink nose. Taxidermist said it's rare. Looking forward to getting it back like that
The taxidermist I always go to is one of the highest priced around. I gag every time paying for one but he’s always done great work and always does what I want. And antler bashing will get people thrown out of his shop!!
IMO, if the customer wants it a certain way and you can fulfill his wishes that's between you and the hunter . The only one ( and I didn't mount it) that I killed and wouldn't want it as it was when I harvested it was because it had so many ticks around it's nose, eyes and ears. It would have been one nasty mount 😂. I'm sure they could have been removed but would have left some nasty scars. But another hunter might have thought it would make an interesting mount , the scars not ticks 😂
I feel like you need to do what the customer wants that or the one paying. Just like on a different note got a guy that lives 3 miles down the road from me does taxidermist I’ve never had a deer mounted pull into his business on a Sunday so he was there just wanted to know how to keep the deer good until the next day so I can drop them off to him He basically opens the door since he closed and would not tell me how to keep my deer safe until the morning long story short care of them to someone else. Got my deer back in four months and he gained a new customer
I’m curious how long did it take you to learn taxidermy ? Cuz I’m wanting to get into it seriously, other than just skulls Mount’s my grandfather has done deer mounts for years ) for just close family. But I just wanted to hear your take on it. I appreciate your comment. much appreciation. Bother
It is actually not that hard to do, but repetition is what makes your work good. It took me about 10 deer to get the hang of what I was trying to do. I probably did 20 or so before I ever started charging
@@thecedarridgechronicles well, this definitely gives me some hope and gives me something to shoot for.! I just don’t want it to look like the 70s to early 2000s mount lol 😂. I’m going on several trips this year that I’ve never been on before and states. And I’m probably going to mount a deer, if blessed with taking one Hopefully it turns out good and not with a smile or messed up ear
I’m always down for what they want, but things such as a deer trying to pull an arrow from his shoulder are a no go. As I saw a fellow taxidermist comment elsewhere. I’ll do the pose, but you do the arrow and don’t say I did it.
Do u feel the same way about "fixing" broken tines/ adding points that were broken off? I kinda feal like its cheating. I usually try to mimic the way the deer was when I shot him in the poses I request also.
I arrowed a nice buck in nov 2018 didn't get it back until jan 2022 covid she said... worse mount I ever seen no hair in spots and the ear had the worse sewing job terrible... I called a couple of taxidermist to see if they could put a new cape on it....one guy hung up and the other said no...its sad this buck was in prime shape....
