Got my first deer this year 2023 and was nervous about messing everything up. After watching your videos, it gave me the confidence i needed to skin the head. Now on to the rest of the process so i can have a cool lookin wrap to wear. Thanks and keep up the beautiful work.
I’ve been watching your videos on deer taxidermy great videos by the way. So today 11/20/22 I have decided to bite the bullet and mount my first deer. I just finished caping out the head and it was easier than I thought. Thanks for your videos. I watched and paused then cut and pause. I’m going to continue to follow your videos on the next steps. Thanks again.
There really isn't. Typically the white clay is much firmer, but not always, depending on the moisture content. When I buy it, I will sometimes alternate between the 2 because I like a softer clay for the ears and firmer for eyes and skull cap. This can also be achieved from opening the plastic slightly and allowing the moisture to drain and evaporate. The top will be firmer while you can flip it and get a softer clay from the bottom.
Thank you! You have been so helpful and such a good teacher my taxidermist said he was quitting deer and just doing birds and fish. So I decided I wanted to try it everybody local and online made it seem so hard. But you made it seem so easy and simple and like you say. “The deer is dead he ain’t going nowhere” lol it has helped me a lot thank you so much!
I'm glad i found this channel. I have several 140' bucks on my wall. I also have several 140" bucks just racks with skull plates because i can't afford to pay$600 for every buck to get mounted. I'm going to to start on my first one real soon. Because of this channel. Thank you.
I really appreciate your videos and puttin it all in a way a redneck can understand. You make look simple and let it be known that a mistake can be fixed and that your way aint the only way to get it done but what you have found works best for you. Appreciate ya sir
After you cape him out and cut the skull cap off what are your steps on cleaning the skull cap? I noticed it looks like your soaking them in something. Thanks for the videos and info its very helpful for a beginner.
I'll clean off all the meat with my scalpel and then use a flat head screwdriver to pop the membrane loose that separates the skull from the brain. Then I use needle nose pliers to remove the membrane. I spray it off with water and then cover the skull cap with borax.
I first started using the y cut but a buddy that mounted our deer for years showed me the 7 cut its a backwards seven it's a continuous sew till the bottom of the neck
I know what your using works great but have you ever tried a utility knife with a shingle hook blade? Works great helps with not cutting hair out just the hide for your sew line

Thanks for the reply...ive done alot of euros in my day..but never really thought about full mounts n actually getting into taxidermy...however your videos have been a bit of an inspiration...I got a nice buck in archery w a broken brow tine..gonna try repairing like you show in your antler repair videos ..see how it works...thanks again!!
I like that knife handle, what brand knife handle is this? You said it was a #11 blade but I am trying to find that exact handle. Great videos keep them coming.
@@thecedarridgechronicles alright, thanks. I do a lot of euro's and skinning smaller critters and trying to find a better replacement blade that will last longer.
If the freezer burn is too bad, it will not accept the pickle or tan and the hair will slip. I have had some luck, however, using a little water to moisten the burnt area enough to allow salting, and then the pickle will soften the hide on up for mounting. Either way, freezer burn is just plain bad.
@@thecedarridgechronicles thank you for that info I’m just starting out doing it and can’t afford to go to school for it so gotta do it myself learn the hard ways 😂
