PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING: If your comment is concerning the FICTIONAL SITUATIONS WHICH CAUSE FICTIONAL DECISIONS TO BE MADE BY FICTIONAL CHARACTERS, then you're not responding to what I'm saying.
So in other words, if you're going to say something like "OF COURSE THE CITY WAS DESTROYED, THEY HAVE SUPERPOWERS" or "CLARK COULDN'T GET HIM AWAY FROM THE CITY," you're not addressing my point in the video. You're talking about the fictional choices in a fictional event.
In the video, I'm talking about the necessity for destruction on that scale in a film about Superman, which I feel was gratuitous and unnecessary. I'm very pro-violence and destruction in movies; this rant isn't against that, It's against using it in a way I feel is lame or doesn't fit the story.
My issue isn't with the specific content of the fictional stories, but the nature of the stories being told. People seem to be really misunderstanding this.
If you're saying anything about "the choices Superman made/didn't make," you're not talking about what I said in the video.

We killed him. We killed Superman. We just no longer can handle that someone like him could ever existed. We no longer feel bad about our own shortcomings. We take them as parts of our own nature. Superman is above all these issues. He wants to be good. He just wants to help us. And thats INSULT US! We need to bring him to our level to feel comfortable. We don't trust someone who is fundamentally better than us. We became Lex Luthor.

+Silence32 Frank Miller did a good job of tearing down Superman, where he was essentially not a lap-dog for the US, but he acted within the best wishes of the US and its citizens, and it wasn't that Batman was afraid of Superman "turning evil", he despised the fact that he wasn't willing to challenge authority, even if it was the right thing to do. That's where Batman comes into play.  Superman is the the "boy scout" who mostly obeys and "fights the good fight". Despite what Landis says, Batman is haunted by his past not because "boo hoo, his parents got killed", he's haunted because of what the city turned it's people into to let that happen. Batman breaks the rules. He's the one who killed Darkseid, not Superman, because being a Superhero doesn't always mean being super good. You can also just TELL that Landis has read barely anything related to Batman or Green Lantern. There's a reason Superman isn't as popular of a comic anymore, and it's because people have grown up and realized that the world is a lot more complicated than the overly optimistic, simple world which is portrayed by Superman.

I don't know much about comic books but... Batman killed Darkseid? How? Isn't Darkseid some kind of Alien God? I thought you can't kill Gods without magic. ... Please tell me it wasn't some kind of bat repellent or even worse gun.

+Silence32 Even though Max bashed Batman in this video I am pretty sure he knows the character well enough (especially since he likes Grant Morrison) to know that Batman also represents something mythological, just like Superman. Darkseid is a God, a New God in fact, living embodiment of Anti-Life and pure evil that corrupts absolutely, he wants all of existence to bow down to his will and he wants Darkseid to become everything, he wants Darkseid and existence to be synonymous. He is the ultimate God of Darkness...but in the story he was "dying" because of certain reasons (Read Final Crisis and it's tie-ins, you might enjoy it if you like metaphysical aspects of fiction). Batman dis use a gun, breaking his rule for this one occasion this one time when all of existence was threatened, more importantly he knew that it would most likely fail and even if it would not fail he would most certainly die, but he still did it. He did it because Batman is what Lex Luthor wants to be, an example of a human that despite the odds stands up to the Gods, that humans despite the flaws have a chance to become something greater. Batman dies in that story, of course death of Darkseid and death of Batman mean nothing since Death is Dead in comic books, but he still made a point, that even though Darkseid is the God of Darkness who wants to dominate your mind and soul you can still fight him just like Batman, the good creature of Darkness did. Superman is still "the main hero" of Final Crisis, he defeats Mandrakk the Destroyed of multiverse and he is the one who exorcises the soul of Darkseid and shatters it, but boy would everyone be fucked if a single mortal guy in a batsuit didn't shoot The Big Bad with a Radion bullet.
@bud389
@bud389 8 лет назад
Silence32 Batman used a radion bullet to essentially kill Darkseid, mortally wounding him, while Batman was also killed by Darkseid's omega beams. This happened in Final Crisis.

@@wolfwoodphreak " it's easy to be good when life comes easy." But is it though? Lots of people born with silver spoons in their mouths, with every resource one could imagine develop drug and alcohol problems, John Paul Getty III and Casey Johnson for examples. Many people who build massive fortunes have squandered it, like MC Hammer and Mike Tyson. Some immensely popular people have had their world turned upside down (rightly or wrongly) when public opinion shifted, like Michael Jackson. There have been very popular and beautiful Instagram models and youtubers who have committed suicide partly because of the online hate they have received. Now you might say "each of those people had challenges that Superman wouldn't face." Sure, but imagine the psychological pressure on Superman if he rescues an old man in a car wreck in Metropolis, but as that happened, a family of 6 perished in a fire in Gotham. Or he rescues a dog on monday, and on tuesday that dog mauls a little girl. Or a building collapses when fighting aliens, crushing hundreds of people even though it was 100% an accident? And what if someone murders a child in a particularly sadistic and Superman finds the killer. Would YOU have the discipline to turn the murderer over to the police? Or would you rip him apart piece by piece? I'm not sure I could do the right thing according to the law in that case, and if Superman did that I wouldn't blame him. But that isn't really the point. The point is that Superman doesn't have it particularly easy. He constantly faces supervillains and powerful aliens that are bent on killing him or destroying the Earth. He has to worry about his mortal loves: Lois and his Mother (and Father before he died), and he has the emotional weight of knowing he is essentially the last of his Species (technically not true, but Kryptonians are an endangered species). And as implied above, he has to deal with the fact that while he can save many, he cannot save everyone. Imagine hearing "why didn't you save *my* baby?" every time you went left instead of right,. "We needed superman, but he didn't come" every time there is a fire and Superman was off-planet.

As the brilliant Mark Waid once said, "I've been telling Superman for years, it's not enough for him to come in and beat up the bad guy. He's got to stick around a clean up after himself." (I'm paraphrasing.) The problems with Superman Returns was too much heroism without any real action or battles. The problem with Man of Steel was too much action without any real heroism. Both movies had too little insight into the character of Superman. One of the great things about the Kryptonian battles in Superman 2 was when the Kryptonians picked up the bus and Superman yelled, "NO! THE PEOPLE!" That entire fight, Superman was trying to minimize property damage and casualties and ultimately led Zod and company away from Metropolis. Absolutely "in character" for Superman. It tells the story of who he is without a ton of repetitive dialogue about who he is. Problem #2 with Man of Steel. His childhood. Superman is not only the greatest person with the greatest powers. The reason he's the way his is because he had THE GREATEST PARENTS. The absolute WORST part of Man of Steel was when kid Clark asked "Should I have let them die?" And Pa Kent said, "Yes, No, Maybe. I don't know." NO! Pa Kent would never have said that. The Kents are the ideal American family. They represent the best qualities of America. They're the reason Supes is as good of a person as he is. Ultimately, Man of Steel seemed like a Superman movie made by people that clearly hate Superman. It's the Superman movie The Joker would have made.

Silverstroke's comment emphadizing on Landis' view (to cut the pointless bullshit you may encounter while scrolling down) "He's not arguing who is responsible for the damage done to Smallville and Metropolis. He arguing that the writers of this film, along with of other recent superhero films, are not focusing on THE HERO'S CHARACTER. they are too busy focusing on the "fire and death" of the battles. He wants these movies to give the audience a strong sense of what each superhero stands for, what they all symbolize. For a good Superman movie, you need to REALLY establish his character, not just focus on the gigantic fight scenes."

I think your analysis of Spiderman is highly unfair. He's not egotistical. If anything, he's incredibly down on himself, and your superficial call over his quipping only proves you either don't read his comics or simply refuse to understand his character. The quipping is his way of overcoming his fear, and classic spiderman goes VERY quiet when the situation turns serious enough. It's also a fact that making spiderman act goofy keeps him from being the creepiest guy around. He can stick to walls, perfectly ambush anyone, has speed and super reflex, and he can see the future to protect himself from danger. You don't ambush him. He ambushes you, and you never see it coming. What If versions exist explore this facet in detail, and Spiderman without his quips is creepy as hell. His quipping is there to let you know this is just a goofy guy trying to play at super hero. Also, he doesn't break his opponent's bones. At what point did you think he did? Part of the point is he can lift 12 tons and still plays pattycake with street level criminals because he doesn't want to punch someone's jaw off by mistake. He could rip most of his own rogues literally in half if he wanted. He has a hard time beating them because, much like Superman, his power comes with responsibility. These guys don't stand a chance against him. Spidey knows that even if it would be easier (and leave him less hurt) to simply break them in half. Also the phrase "child soldier" comes to mind. Any version of spidey generally gets his powers before he's an adult. Many instances he's not even old enough to DRIVE before he's web slinging with experience. Part of the point of his character is this guy that had to grow up along with is powers. Superman always comes out of his smallville childhood a man ready to be superman. Peter is thrown in to the world of superheroing at 15 and has to grapple with complex moral quandaries someone his age doesn't normally deal with.

+Fuuka Ayase Exactly my friend. I believe he is being unfair to a lot of heroes in the brief few minutes of this video. Batman is anything BUT a sociopath or a selfish post traumatic sissy as he puts it. That is just a bunch of bullcrap and biased fanboy talk. He is man that saw the true savage nature of mankind up close and personal and decided to do something about it. His dark experience made him decide to sacrifice his childhood and give meaning to this thing we call existence even if there is none to be found and yet despite that grim realization he decides to give the most evil of villains a chance even when they clearly don't deserve it because he believe life is precious and even the most vile of criminals can turn his life around. (e.g such as the Joker in the Killing Joke) Because he realized he doesn't need superpowers to do what's right and what needs to be done. He is not some farmboy that has no true motive to do the right thing and is just afraid he might trip and crush one of his classmates. He basically didn't lift a finger to save people up until he left for the big city and his earthly stepfather died. Batman on the other hand spent decades honing his skills to reach to that level to even be considered a superhero (just like Wonder Woman, Spiderman) whereas Superman had all these powers simply handed to him. The thing he described as a strong point is actually a major flaw in Superman storylines. The villain doesn't match the power level of the hero. Apart from villains such as Darkseid, Zod and Doomsday, Luthor is like an evil Bruce Wayne that uses his wits to outsmart him and kill him or label him as a threat to the planet and ironically enough, is the most popular and well known of his villains. If this guy actually read a comic book he would know destruction commonly takes place in Superman comic books such as the Death of Superman. Batman Begins is a movie that did exactly what this guy wanted from Man of Steel. He saved his city and stopped the bad guy without having half of it's population killed from fear gas, even though personally i would have much rather preferred he saved Ras as well just like the animated Batman would do. But i get it, they went for that cool moment where the hero makes the villain face the consequences of his actions, so i don't complain.

Thank you. My God I've been trying to put words to how I felt about that entire sequence in Man of Steel; and you pulled it off. People got up in arms about the end of that fight; my point of view was this: They nevber establish that killing is a line Superman won't cross; so why is it such a big issue? His only interaction with Zod is adversarial; had the two bonded in some way, like Zod taking Clark under his wing for a few scenes and showing him Krypton in recorded images; showing him the world he never new and the people who would've been his own. Showing us WHY Zod was willing to damn all of humanity for the return of his own people, it gives us a reason to be unsure about killing him because we've seen more than just the general; we see a broken man who wants back what the shortsighted people he once served took from him. But we don't get that; we simply get a rabid dog in a suit of armor with a sickle on it. And that's what should've happened to Zod, he should've been put down like a rabid dog; he's proven to be irredeemable and has no qualms about killing every human on earth purely out of spite now. Batman may be a sociopath, but he aknowledges that he has no real right to exercise final justice on anyone; that taking a life is a step to far and if he does so becomes no better than those he fights. For him it's a "he who fights monsters" situation; what is it for Clark? We're never shown and that's one of the things that killed this movie for me; it gave us a Superman willing to basically allow a bomb to go off in metropolis and had to question wether taking out the guy who set off the bomb was a justifiable action. Sorry for the rant; it will never make sense how you can lose your mind over killing one insane Kryptonian when your actions/inactions have killed God only knows how many; some hero.

The actions of the fictional character within the story isn't the point he's trying to make, so you're wasting your time trying to argue with him about it. The problem here is you have a Superman film written by people who thought making unnecessary changes to the character's origins and adding over-the-top destruction would be cool. Goyer and company had an opportunity to make an epic character piece that demonstrated just what kind of character Superman is, why he does what he does, and how the world reacts to him. Even including the spectacle people would expect from a Superman film. Instead we got an aimless, unsure character who doesn't really develop, surrounded by people whose sole purpose is to crap on him, stymie his growth, or provide exposition as to what sort of character he's going to be in the future. This character bounces from place to place aimlessly until the principle enemy appears, and then the film devolves into a spectacle of destruction and death; first in Smallville, and then in Metropolis. At no point does Superman attempt to avoid or minimize the destruction of areas nor prevent casualties (going indoors is pointless because he allows the fights to enter the buildings) and only stops the villains after billions of dollars in property damage and easily over 100,000 lives are lost. The point is it wasn't necessary to write the story that way. The movie could've reasonably developed Superman's character, gave audiences perspectives from people around him, provided a compelling villain, and gave audiences the obligatory Summer blockbuster spectacle without the devastation and Superman's character assassination. To add insult to injury, Goyer and company don't bother to address the destruction and just moved on to the end of the film.

MVG This is why I liked the original Superman movies (Well, the Donner/Reeves ones). Remember Superman 2? Yeah, they fight in Metropolis, and shit gets blown up. But, as soon as Zod goes after the bus, Superman says the most Superman thing of all time: "Zod, the PEOPLE!". The fight ended there, and Supes knew he had to get away from the major city. I WANT to like Man of Steel, but I really can't. It's fundamentally flawed. I want to say "Superman can look back and see the destruction that happened, and he grows as a character, and gains an appreciation of how fragile human life can be." But I can't say that. Because of his father. Well, his Earth father, Jonathan. THAT life ending should have shown him how precious life is. But it didn't. Not in this movie. The most valuable lesson that could have been portrayed in the Superman character was ultimately forgotten for some Michael Bay "Let's blow shit up for 20 minutes" crap. I WANT to like Man of Steel. Everything technical about it was great. Visuals, dialogue, directing....a very pretty movie. But.....

+MVG What gives you the right to say what is good writing for Superman and what isn't? What unnecessary changes were made to the origin story? Over the top destruction? I bet you don't know much about comic books, you know, the source material. Similar levels of destruction happen in Superman comics all the time, especially when Superman fights powerful villains. Kal-El's origin story and development in MoS was actually very similar to the Earth One comic. You can't say the writing was bad when it is based on source material. Just because this Superman wasn't exactly like your own imaginary ideal of what he is supposed to be, doesn't mean it's wrong. How was he supposed to "minimize damage", when he was fighting beings who were equally as powerful as himself and higher skilled, for the first time in his life? The destruccion will be addressed in the sequel. You're a bit short sighted in criticizing them for not addressing the damage at the end of the film, when it was obvious a sequel would be made.

You are right about Superman and that's why, if I can quote you, that _'people don't care about Superman'_. He's the biggest Mary Sue ever. Nothing is more boring than heard the story of how a "perfect being" happened to save the world by being perfect. Even in real life, if you meet a guy who's; twice as talented as you, better looking, Stronger, Faster, Witty, flawless... If you find someone like that, the first thought going through your mind would be to find out if one of his many talents would be to fit in a wood chipper. Same thing to a lesser extend with Batman and his ability to always predict everything and make overly convoluted plan that always end up working.

The problem here is that Warner wanted to replicate their success of Dark Knight by turning Man of Steel into another Dark Knight, and what makes these two characters work is not how similar they are, but how far apart they are. A Superman film should be filled with hope and promise. Dark Knight Trilogy is not. Clark Kent's just a guy from Kansas who has gone his entire life being trained by his parents to hide what makes him special. He's a bull in a china shop that honestly loves delicate things and doesn't wanna hurt a fly. He is a walking solar battery who feels power, can sense his surroundings in ways we can barely imagine, but he's a gentle giant who only wants what's best of the people around him. He's not only strong and fast of body, but also of mind. He's learned, and has a morality that's part boy scout and part Jeffersonian. He's quick witted, and would come up with a solution to avoid unnecessary loss of life. He woulda thought of that before engaging in battle. The story doesn't give him time to do that. and it doesn't allow him to ever make choices that would minimize destruction, cuz deep down the movie makers really just wanted to tell a story of wanton destruction using the BIG S cuz they knew it'd make a lot of money. That's not Superman. Whoever made Man of Steel the movie obviously never cracked open an Action comic. Or if they did, they didn't like what they saw and didn't understand why anyone else would. So they took the name and the suit and some of the trappings but completely failed to get what makes Superman so super. The answer is Clark Kent doesn't see himself as an alien, even after he's presented that evidence. All he knows is what it's like to be a kid on a farm. Man of Steel took the Kansas out of Clark, and that's perhaps the most Cardinal of its sins.

I will agree on one thing for sure, Superman movies should not have a city getting leveled in the third act. The third act is when the hero finally solves the problem, but a city getting leveled is one of the most serious problems that Superman could experience. Instead you could put it in the first act and have the remainder of the story be about Superman trying to pick up the pieces (it would automatically be a much better 9/11 allegory!) or put in the second act, and Superman can't be around while it happens (I guess that means he can't be the protagonist, so maybe this is an idea for a crossover movie).

handsomebrick well from the new batman v superman trailer it looks like that will happen. personally I thought that man of steel's biggest problems was the two different styles of directors. on one hand you have zack Snyder who is known for generally making fun very beautifully shot movies. on the other hand you had Nolan who is known for his dark and subtext style of "this means something" movies. so when you have these to styles together it creates a very polarizing movie. but now that Nolan is gone I think the movie will have a much more focused tone. whether or not that tone or the movie is good, we will have to see.

handsomebrick At the very least, Superman shouldn't have a big hand in causing the destruction.
@ChestRockwell24
@ChestRockwell24 9 лет назад
handsomebrick The problem is though the destruction made sense. What had Superman been doing before Zod showed up? Had he been some big super hero? Did he have a lot of experience fighting super villains or saving the world? No, he was like the "Littlest Hobo" but in human form. Going from town to town looking for work, and if he came across some sort of accident where his powers could help..he would help. He'd never fought a soldier like Zod, someone who is his equal in power, who was bred for battle. To suddenly expect Superman to know how to disarm the situation 100% peacefully with as little damage as possible..is silly. For people to whine over "Superman doesn't kill" is silly. Why doesn't Superman kill? "Because he is Superman" will be the response. Here they gave us an actual reason: because he has had to take a life before, and he never wants to be in a position to do that again. People say Supes could of tried to take the fight out of the city, but Zod didn't want to just fight Superman, he wanted to destroy the people he loved, so he would of just come right back. You know what happens when two god like beings throw down? People die, loads of people. We think Superman know better merely because..well, he is "Superman" without taking into consideration the growth or lack of growth of the character. Superman isn't perfect, he isn't going to suddenly know how to be the perfect superhero by putting on a costume, it takes time, effort, and practice. He didn't really have much experience fighting against Zod. It's actually a miracle he won the fight at all given Zod was bred for combat..and even though he really didn't want to kill one of the last remaining members of his race..he did, to save the world. But people will be upset over the body count, and otherwise upset because this version of Superman wasn't just born perfect. But of course a common complaint about Superman is that he is too powerful and too perfect and people can't relate to him. Thing is? Superman, in comics, has broken his "no kill" code in the best when it TRULY called for it. This wasn't actually a new thing. In the comics, alternate versions of Zod and two other Kryptonian criminals had essentially killed all life on their planet Earth(once again, an alternate Earth). Superman kills them with kryptonite..AFTER he removed their super powers permanently. He kills them. So heck at least in the movie Zod still had his powers and was actively a threat, but in the comics he'd been depowered permanently with golden kryptonite. Superman still killed him, this was in the early-mid 90s and I do not remember a big uproar. Plus everything is not so black and white and a "no killing code" is not automatically the brightest idea. Countless villains have gone on to murder many innocents because Superman failed to stop them once and for all. Superman himself has even nearly allowed himself to be killed by demonic beings because he would of had to kill them to stop them. Now keep in mind how much the world would suffer if Superman were to die, and here his "no killing" code almost literally results in him getting beat to death, and this is portrayed as some kind of noble thing as opposed to just REALLY stupid.
@handsomebrick
@handsomebrick 9 лет назад
ChestRockwell24 It's mostly a story problem. If Superman is fighting a guy and he can't prevent a city from getting leveled, he loses. Which is fine, but it's weird as an ending, it would be like a Die Hard movie where the badguys simply win at the end, or an intentionally hollow ending like The Big Lebowski. Also, I don't think that Superman has a no kill code, and Max says right in this video that it's okay for Superman to kill, so we're all okay there.
@reecerobertson457
@reecerobertson457 10 лет назад
I pretty much agree entirely except for the Superman killing thing. I don't think Clark sees himself as an adult among children, he sees himself (as you said earlier) as 'just a guy'. Killing villains makes him something more than a superhero, he becomes an authority, a decider - and I don't think Clark wants to ever become that. He sees himself as entirely human, and as one of the people, so taking it to that extra level and killing villains immediately makes him seem like he's making big moral decisions for the rest of humanity. He's no longer just a citizen doing his part to make the world a better place, he's actually deciding what makes a person worthy of execution - and that's just not Clark. That's the alien menace that Lex Luthor sees him as, that's General Zod, that's the kind of character Clark never ,ever wants to be.

But thats the point, he deciding to kill is against everything he believes and had contact with. Superman's goodness is based by his influence of his parents, he always persuades his enemies instead of beating them because he is powerfull enough to do so. If you chose the situation he kills in the movie you can argue that decision, but as Max said the bigger discussion is why you would chose that direction for a character like Superman.

What I find fascinating is why so many people are failing to grasp what Max is trying to explain? The actions of the fictional character in the film are irrelevant because the writer(s) determine what those actions are. He's mentioning issues that prevented him (and many of us) from enjoying Man of Steel and are also indicative of a trend that is popping up in a lot of modern superhero/action blockbusters. A lack of heroism in our heroes, city destroying sequences, and a failure to acknowledge the consequences of the heroes actions. The problem here is a Man of Steel film written by people who weren't as interested in telling the story of (arguably) the world's most popular superhero as they were in making a "cool" action flick. Superman has 77 years of development and backstory across various forms of media to draw from, and they ignore virtually all of it in favor of trying to make him more relevant to a segment of modern audiences. By the way, there's really no reason to change what worked with Superman before. The character has stayed relatively the same (albeit with changes to his powers and minutiae in his origin) for 77 years and is still loved and recognized all over the world. So trying to turn him into something he's not to appeal to new fans is unnecessary. Warner Bros seemed determined to distance themselves from the previous Superman films and the comics and capitalize on the popularity and style of the Nolan Batman films by re-imagining Superman using a similar method. They decided to write a brooding, troubled, unsure Superman with trust issues who wanders the world aimlessly to try to find his purpose. Since he is also an immensely powerful character and has enemies to match, Warner Bros decided to demonstrate what might happen during a superhuman battle in a heavily populated area. I say "might" because super-humans don't exist, and writers determine how much damage takes place in their stories and how effective a hero is at stopping it. And that's the problem. In Man of Steel, there is little to no development of characters and all of the effort was put into an unnecessarily complicated and messy story with too much exposition, themes that are introduced and not explored, and over-the-top destruction and death. Clark Kent/Superman is not allowed to develop into a complete character and hero, and only steps up AFTER the Earth is threatened by the Kryptonians, and he has no choice. Then after all the death and destruction, the writers don't even bother to address it; they just move on to the end of the film. The point is it wasn't necessary to write the film that way. It wasn't necessary to write the hero engaged in two city destroying sequences, recklessly fighting and participating in the carnage rather than trying to mitigate it or even show concern. It wasn't necessary to make changes to Superman's character at all. The writers stripped most of the hero out of Superman when they introduced him in Man of Steel and never bothered to rebuild it.

@Hoopla10

+MVG I agree about overall point and there's a definite popular fascination regarding mass destruction and its depiction on film. Maybe it's because as a spectacle (as terrible as that sounds) it's now possible to do on such a large scale via cgi. Or it's images that exploit horrific real life images that came from tragedies like 9/11. Maybe it's exploitative, maybe it's cathartic. However maybe I miss your point but it seems to have no room for interpretation by the writers. Can't the character evolve to remain relevant? Can't the writer/director project their representation of Superman as seen through their own eyes/lens? isn't that a fundamental thing about art? The characterisation of Clark/Superman seems a strong point of this origin story. The clean cut all-American, just wouldn't sit right I don't think with modern audiences. I'm not saying they had to go the route they did, but that route is none the less valid. A lack of heroism is curious because does that pivot on somebodies perception of what heroism is or is that an absolute? Historically its changed through time. In MoS he fights somebody that is stronger than he is, somebody bred to fight and kill, in almost any other film that would make him a hero archetype, right?

+jon Q I've been wondering how intentional this entire thing has been, now that I see where the Marvel and DC movies/TV shows are heading. Take Batman v Superman. Is Zack Snyder's new movie simply keying into the audiences reaction and repulsion to the overblown destruction of Man of Steel, or did he intentionally go over the top -- knowing how the average fan would react -- specifically so that he could create the kind of storyline we're going to see in the next movie? Essentially I'm contemplating a pseudo-conspiracy theory which puts forth the idea that Man of Steel was received exactly the way that Snyder intended. He included and emphasized a catastrophic level of destruction in order to manipulate his audience into the kind of mindset that we'll see from Bruce Wayne in Dawn of Justice. Have we all just been puppets? Or...is the movie industry just obsessed with destroying entire CGI cities because they can?

ZeroSum23 It's tempting to thing that it was carefully orchestrated in order to elicit the reaction it did, but I think that is grossly over thinking it and giving way too much credit to the writers and Snyder. I mean, Batman v Superman looks worse and worse the more I see of it... this leads me to believe that there is no long term plan, just made up on the fly as they go. And hollywood certainly has a long, long, long track record of destroying cities for the disaster porn enthusiasts.

I'm waiting for BvS and Justice League to pass judgement on Superman's actions entirely, but for now I'm okay with it. The main reason is because Man of Steel is sorta like Superman Year One. At this point, he was still getting a grip on his abilities, responsibilities, and all that jazz, and I think that BvS (and JL to a lesser extent) are going to elaborate on Supes' interactions with other heroes, mainly Batman, and learn what it means to be a superhero, and the responsibilities that come with that title.

See, that's where people don't understand batman. I really hate the post-DKR batman. 70's batman is the best. Not at all a mentally unstable psycho. The only reason 70's batman ever brings up his parents is when he's helping Robin with his grief. Because 70's batman isn't a brooding dumbass, he's the world's greatest detective. His "villains" are the EXACT same people, the he and robin COULD'VE become in the wake of their exposure to adversity, but their response to it, is what made thier personality. That, alone, is what makes batman so great. His sympathy. He doesn't hate these people, he just wants to help them. That's why, sure, batman wouldn't use a gun, but he shouldn't be put in that situation to begin with, because it's entirely irrelevant to the significance of his character. For that reason alone, batman should never be "V. Anyone" let alone SUPERMAN. I hate psycho batman, because it's the constant attempt at exploring freshman year psychology. 70's Batman is the worlds greatest detective. He's analytical- He's logical. He knows that logically, he is who he is because of his parent's murder, and he knows that logically, he can transcend that, because it's not the most logical thing to do. It's fairly simple to understand, it was all the world's indifference to his specific wishes.

Almost all of the Batman books I've got in my collection are practically post DKR. Early (good) Miller stuff, pair of things from LotDK, Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum by Morrison, The Cult (actually didn't like that one at all), the Loeb and Sale stuff (not really a fan, but it's decent stuff) and then some more modern stuff, like Morrison's epic run and the new 52. This is the Batman I've been exposed to, the one I practically grew up with. But I've also got a copy of the "demon trilogy" (Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon and Birth of the Demon) and man, do I love that book. Pure 70's genius in those pages, Batman does way more detective work, is more analytical.. overall felt more like the "world's greatest detective" and less like the "world's greatest brawler" that he became from the late 80's to the early 2000's.. yeah. Completely different stuff, it actually felt refreshing to read those stories. Too bad that wasn't what people wanted, apparently. When they told Miller to write a Batman story, very few people were buying the comics, DC was considering cancelling the title I think..

He isn't perfect. He makes mistakes. This is the most "human" Superman ever in the movies. You're comparing a Superman from the comics who has been a hero for years to a guy who just learned he could fly the same day he's fighting other "Supermen/Superwomen" who have been bred to be warriors. Zod even say's, "Where did you train? On a farm?" Yes exactly. He has had zero training. Hell, from what's shown, Clark has not even been in a fight in his entire life. He never used his powers to their extent. Yes YOU know what Superman is capable of, but you're on the outside looking in as someone with all of Superman's history to call on. In this movie this is Week 1 Day 1 of Superman. Batman made mistakes in Batman Begins and he actually was trained to be a damn ninja. All I'm saying is cut the guy some slack. It's his first day. You're basically mad some civilian who works out a lot but never has been in a fight couldn't take on three Navy Seals without collateral damage.

You show a deep understanding of Superman's character, his morality, motivation, drive and purpose. I think what makes him MORE relatable than all other heroes, is that one aspires to be as like him as one can. But I think you "get" Superman more than most. However, in this specific movie, we're watching a Superman at the very beginning of his career meeting people on his level of power as his first test. Generally, in other stories, he starts off small and works his way up. Add to that, by the time he realizes a little about his and Zod's potential for destruction and Zod's willingness to commit any depravity on what he views as insects, Superman only has less than an hour to deal with it. Add to that, Zod's ability to counter Superman's desire to move the fight somewhere "safe" and the city has to be destroyed and Superman has to kill him (you're certainly right about that). Now do we WANT to see a city destroyed while Superman is trying to save the day? No. But the way these events fell into place made it inevitable. Maybe if Superman had more time to develop his powers and had a year or more in gradually escalating the abilities of the villains he faced, the city could have been saved by the time Zod showed up. I just don't think it would make sense in this movie if he saved the city. I also don't think it made sense in Superman II.

Kevin Newman Here's the thing, any villains could show up and do something to devastate a city while Superman fights him. It's not something a Superman fan like me wants to see, though. Superman is like ET with a cape. It should be a movie about hope and making people happy. It should be joyful with some dramatic stuff in it. That's why the movie to me was more like Super-Alien vs other Alien than Superman. There was nothing in the way they had Henry Cavill play the character that was anything "Superman".

The events in the battle with Zod are important plot points for the next film in the DCCU (Batman v Superman) so at least they aren't leaving it alone like it's nothing. Also, imo, the fact that it was such a disaster kinda shows how imperfect this Superman is, so when he can be that righteous hero who can save everyone, then we know he has truly become Superman.

Ok, this guy claims to be a Superman fan and even arrogantly says we don't know the character, yet it seems to me he has never read a single modern Superman comic book in his life. The kind of destruction seen in MoS isn't strange or shocking for a Superman story, if you actually know them. Numerous comic storylines have shown similar levels of damage, with Superman fighting villains with powers equal to his own, just like what happened with Zod in the movie. I'm guessing this guy never read the Death of Superman and noticed the amount of damage caused in Superman's fight with Doomsday. Or Superman's fights with Tyrell and Parasite in Earth One. Or his fight with Ulysses in the New 52, etc. And I'm not even bringing animated iterations to the table. Even if the destruction in the movie was something never seen before (which we know it's not the case), I'd still say it was not a problem, as it was a realistic portrayal of what would happen when two god like beings went at it. Especially considering Superman was completely inexperienced and unprepared for such an event and was basically thrown in that situation. I'll take a realistic and serious portrayal of Superman over the cheesy boy scout one (where he immediately becomes a perfect hero and nothing truly bad happens) any day.

It had to be destroyed, he tried his best to prevent it but he couldn't; this also leads in to the next movie. Everything had reasons! Just like in your movie Chronicles, we know who is fighting, we know why destruction is happening and why it isn't so easily preventable.

@Arsene48
@Arsene48 9 лет назад
I don't know, I'm genuinely starting to think you're mistaking his intelligence for salt, (His intelligence, another thing we have on record.) putting it in retroactively doesn't change the fact that it's literally still exactly what he said in the video just explained in a more detailed manner. It's not as if his position shifted somehow, it's the same argument. All I'm seeming to realize is someone doesn't want to actually talk about his argument, and what he's trying to say, and wants to dismiss it by shifting the argument to something it's blatantly already been said it wasn't about to desperately defend (As I've seen many times before.) a superman film that misses all of the basic tenants of the character (And that's before the last action sequence in metropolis everyone has so many problems with including myself.) such as making superman an asshole early on in the film and having a ridiculous scene involving a tornado early on that has so many problems and inconsistencies it's not even worth going into them when they've been discussed so thoroughly in the past, and that's just the tip of the iceberg with the film. And that's coming from someone who doesn't hate it like others, but can still admit it's a flawed as fuck film that stars not superman, but some dude in a cape who doesn't act like him at all. The problems with that film reach far beyond that last act despite how poorly constructed from a storytelling perspective it is, but rather start early on, in that you never actually see a shred of Superman in this character, maybe in a couple of moments, but it's usually ruined by something else un-"Super" like he'll do a few minutes later. But now this is going to turn into an argument if I keep going, and I've had it so many times I don't care enough to have it again. So I'm just gonna skip to the end, we'll likely have to respectfully agree to disagree, and off I go, never to bother you or vice versa again. So have a nice day and, no, I didn't mean that with any snark, It *Was* Genuinely sincere.

Thanks for making this video and saying everything I try to express to people about that skillfully made, beautifully shot, hideously filtered and edited, and horribly written movie. Chronicle does what Man of Steel failed to do; it evoked a scene from Superman 2 that is arguably at the core of movie. "No, don't do it! The people!" Clark doesn't have his own motivations at all in Man of Steel, meanwhile the most obvious is horrifyingly ignored: The people need him. Can anyone tell me, with evidence, why Clark becomes a superhero at all? Seems like he was an aimless 20-something looking for ANYTHING to do and once an opportunity comes along, he just kind of goes for it because he already has the skills needed and it'll impress Space-dad. Oh wait, I get it. Man of Steel is about the state of America's aimless, emo, wandering youth?

Man of Steel's climax was... Zod and his people destroying the city, while attempting to destroy the world... Superman destroys a machine, then a ship, and then fights Zod... until forced to snap his neck. The Aftermath is... Life goes on, half of the world doesn't trust Superman. Supes destroys a spy drone and tells the military that they have to trust him. The end. Batman v Superman's climax was... Batman beats Superman in a fight, then they become friends, Lex creates a monster to kill Superheroes, he can't control it, it gets loose... Supes, Wonder Woman, and Batman team up and kill the monster... but at Superman's expense. Superman dies. The aftermath is... Life goes on. Half the world hears about the event, half doesn't as they were all asleep and the battle lasted five minutes on an abandoned island. Superman is dead, and they hold two funerals. One for Clark, one for Superman. What they ~NEED~ to show is... Superman being a good guy, in Man of Steel. Him helping to rebuild, using his powers to undo the mess he helped make... Take responsibility, like a "Man" a Super Man. Then the world wouldn't have a huge hate boner for him. During the fight with Zod... They need to show clips of Zod going after people... That explains why Superman needs to stop him so badly. The urgency. They need to show clips of Superman using his powers to save people, in the heat of the battle... Stop buildings from crushing people, catch cars with people in them, use his x-ray vision to see which buildings are empty, and throw Zod into ~those~ or to use his sight and hearing, to listen for trapped people, DURING the fight... He's SUPERMAN, Don't tell me he CAN'T do that, lol Thats what they needed to show us. Instead, all they show us is buildings falling, people running, screaming, dying, while Zod and Clark exchange one liners and cheesy threats.

This is why Batman v Superman disappointed me so much (I knew it was going to from the trailers). I was giving the makers of Man of Steel a little too much credit, because I thought at the end of the movie that it was a good first chapter, and in the next movie we'd see the Superman that you're describing. I thought the events of Man of Steel would have helped him grow into the hero that I've always loved, because he realized he effed up in his approach to the crisis at hand. Instead we got Batman v Superman. In the first scene when he appears on screen, I actually thought to myself "what is he going to say to this guy to get him to drop his gun?" The answer: nothing, because I guess that's not bad ass. A better response is to smash a normal human being through three concrete walls with no warning, because you can't threaten Supe's girlfriend and get away with that, bro!

Max (and *CheshireKat5865*), thank you for discussing these recent soulless superhero films. The DCAU and even the recent DC animated features do a better job exploring and establishing the character of the titular hero(s) than most of these live-action films (ex. Superman vs The Elite/What's So Funny About T, J, & A?). And though we are talking about Superman here, I still think that the best superhero character study ever put to film was 1993's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Uptomyknees I see your point, but I also kind of see what direction they were trying to go for the Man of Steel movie - the main issue, I think, is really just that what you're trying to describe is in *past* Superman movies. This, however, is a Superman *Origins* Movie, not just some other Supeman movie where Superman has been fighting crime for years. Superman has grown up with his powers at this point, true, but he's also still yet to find his limits and figure out his powers, not to even mention that he doesn't know much about his race, yet alone encounter any others of them besides himself. Your analogue regarding adults and children works perfectly here - yes, you could say that Superman isn't responsible for Zod, but Superman *also* ever hasn't had to defend the Human race, or so-called *"children"*, from another of his race, or a second *"adult"*. A key component of Superman's character is that he constantly holds back, but Supes doesn't know how to really do that perfectly yet - it's either that he holds back too much, and gets his @ss handed to him while Humans are killed, or he doesn't hold back enough, and there's collateral damage. This is also going hand-in-hand with your suggestions at 6:25 - you've already suggested that Superman and Zod should've fought in Space or on the Moon, but Superman still hasn't even found out that his Kryptonian biology allows him to survive the lack of a Atmosphere without Oxygen. TBH, it's similar to how the New 52 is looking in Superman's Comics - it's just a younger, inexperienced and flawed Clark that hasn't got all of himself figured out yet in terms of what he can or can't do. Anyways, just IMO.

I know this is a year late, but i still want to say this. My issue with the final fight Man of Steel was not the fact that he killed people not that not that he destroyed a city, but while he was destroying the city he did not seem to care. Until those four people almost died in the train station, he did nothing to try to minimize the damage.David S. Goyer tried to create tension where based on Superman's actions up to that point there should not have been any. They had set up that neither of Kal-El's fathers had much issue letting humans die, and that Superman had no issue killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians by literally throwing Zod threw buildings with little thought for the people inside. I get that this was an inexperienced Superman relatively new to serious crime fighting so some serious collateral damage was not all that surprising, but having him watch an entire city get destroyed and hundreds of thousands of people die and have little to know reaction that was surprising. That is not even touching on the rest of the movie's plot conveniences, and poorly written or unlikable characters. the script for this movie needed a lot more work before they started shooting that they just were not willing to do. There was stuff I really liked about the movie, but overall i still did not enjoy the experience. i highly doubt anyone will see this, but this was my opinion of Man of Steel one i wrote down a year late. later

Its not what happens on man of steel thats wrong. If you put it up as bullet points its a standard superman yarn, its the execution thats so mind bogglingly bad and out of character. Jon kent dies? No biggy, he always dies from a heart attack and its where clark learns he cant save everyone. In the movie? He dies in a tornado in front of him letting him know full well he could save his life. I mean, thats noble and everything jon but you think he's able to pay his therapy bills after watching his dad die infront of him? Clark kills Zod? Big whoop, supes kills zod all the time. The aspect that "he has to do the one thing he never wants to do, and he has to do it on the only other kryptonian alive" is standard in superman stuff. But he does it after the man demolishes the entire city!? Did he only realize he was boxing space Stalin before or after the family of four because I'm sure those hundred of thousands of other people would have wished he'd noticed sooner.

+SaiyanZ3 "I am the light" That's an example of what I like to call "Heavy-Handed Heroic Sanctimony". That's basically a writer needlessly beating the audience over the head with evidence indicating that a certain character is the good guy or hero. They tend to do the same thing with villains by making the villain take the time to do something randomly evil to some insignificant character they could easily ignore or just kill quickly. Nope, they stop major villainous activity to torment an insignificant character (or make some long-winded speech about a character(s) can't stop them), thus beating the audience over the head that this character is the villain. An example of that (from Dragonball Z in the Trunks prologue after the Cell Saga) would be Android 17 (and 18) attacking a city and groups of people and 17 stopping to torment an old man with a pistol rather than just immediately blast him with energy from a distance. We get it; these versions of the androids are evil.

MVG I don't have a problem with the Android 17 part, I have a problem with the "I am the light" speech because it isn't Goku's character to say that about himself AND Akira Toriyama wrote Goku's character so that he wouldn't fight on the behalf of others, which ends up being true for the most part

I just watched man of steel, and agree with this video. The problem with the movie to me is that it just tries to do too many things to quickly, like the kiss between lois and Kal after he stops the machine. Superman being forced to kill has always been one of those 'engame' type scenarios. Zod's death seemed more like decision made by the writers. What's now stopping him from killing Lex or Darksied when they inevitably cross paths in these movies?.. I thought Nolan understood the moral fibre of heroes like Superman after watching dark knight. Maybe the choice wasn't his..

It might have been too unfair of me to point the fault at Nolan. Snyder has always been a very visual director, but he's also clumsy. He sometimes bumbles between visual and gratuitousness, which kind of makes me fear how Lois and Clark romance is handled in the future movies, if his previous works are any indication... As for Superman killing, lets not kid ouselves; "Becuse the writer said so" got him in and "Becuse the writer said so" will probably get him out. Unless they elect to make him more of a killer, which might be interesting, but more solid writing/character would definitely have to back that up.

I think the level of destruction works knowing that Snyder had a plan to develop Clark into that Superman you speak of here across several films. You can still argue that he should've had that desire to save people before even meeting Zod,. I think Snyder wanted to very much comment on these Avengers/Transformers 3 endings where the city is destroyed but everyones happy and thankful and kind of show us how it might go in a world where the public reacts more like we do IRL. It's a shame the reception of his first two and set leaks of his 3rd convinced WB to hijack that potential multi-film character arc. That's why I love your Man of Steel 2 pitch, because it effectively does all of waht Snyder wanted to do and more in one film.

The funny thing is Dragonball Z does this better sometimes. The heroes, whenever they can convince the villains, try to lure them away from inhabited areas so they can fight unrestricted with the bad guys. Too bad Superman doesn't do so here. It's not the same as with other movies, like the Transformers films, for example: Dark of the Moon, where the Decepticons ACTIVELY want to trash the shit out of Chicago, or Age of Extinction, where the the 'Cons and Lockdown are willingly tearing apart Hong Kong looking for the Seed. Superman can run and lure the bad guys to fight on other places. Yet he kinda doesn't.......that's what really puzzled me.....

HolyknightVader999 Um, nope. First of all, Superman can't just run off for many reasons: 1) Most of the time, his enemies aren't even there particularly to fight him at all - they're only there for their own motivations, and he's just in the way for what they're trying to do. If Superman runs, then they just do what they came to do, and no-one stops them. 2) The ones that actually *are* there to fight him know that he holds back in populated areas. They're not going anywhere if they know that Supes can't go full throttle in the middle of Metropolis and, if he tries to run, then they just threaten civilians. In regards to Man of Steel, in particular, that's not fair to say for the simple reason that it's actually a Superman *Origins* story - Superman hasn't fully-mastered all of his powers, hasn't learned how to hold back while fighting and hasn't even heard of his alien race before the movie, let alone meet another of his kind. In terms of DBZ, that's only happened a couple of times and its totally disregarded at other points - besides, it's balanced by the negligence that some characters show in the Manga. For example, Goku having two 8-year-old children, one of them being his own son, fight a Planetary threat and letting it blow up the Earth. It's ironic that a show like DBZ would need to take protective measures against collateral the *least* with plot devices like the Dragon Balls, but whatever.

Lonewolf3002 Then couldn't he work to have an evac system for the city? Or try to stop the enemy before they get into the city with some kind of warning or observation system? He did have his robots after all-can't they form sentries or sentinels to hold back the enemy before they get to Metropolis, so that the people have time to run? By the later parts of the comics, we have a veritable army of superheroes that can delay the monsters and villains while other heroes and the military can evacuate the civilians. By that point, Metropolis would've probably had shield generators and robot armies ready to fight the villains as well as rocket trains to evacuate the people when the villains come by, based on how many times they get attacked. That only happened with Buu, and Buu killed everyone on Earth that can resist him by that time. Hell, Super Buu could've flattened them all, and they hung on the fact that he wants a strong opponent to make him wait until Gotenks was ready.
@Lonewolf3002-OG
@Lonewolf3002-OG 9 лет назад
HolyknightVader999 Again, it's a Superman *Origins* story - if he's just barely figuring out that he's Kryptonian, let alone that there are others that survived and are trying to take over Earth, what makes you think that he'd have the forethought or resources to get a System like that online? Again, he'd *barely* just found the Fortress - I doubt that even if he did find more robots besides the one that attacked Lois, he'd still have to also figure out how they function and how to reprogram them, to listen to his commands as sentries. Keep in mind that this is Kryptonian technology, which is also *millions* of years beyond anything on Earth. So? It still happened. In terms of resisting Buu, I suppose that I'll have to ignore the fact that Goku and Vegeta did just that later on. Even ignoring that, Goku should've *known* that Gotenks would d!ck around while he's confronting Buu - he's known both the Kids for years, and he also knows how Fusion works in regards to their personalities.

Lonewolf3002 In Man of Steel, the only thing Zod wants was Superman. He wanted revenge on Superman and wanted to kill him. It was only near the end when Zod targeted humans with his heat vision. Prior to that, all the mess Zod and his crew caused aside from the whole planet-remodeling thing was them looking for Superman. Again, not the same thing. None of the major heroes that can stand against Buu were dead. And no, he barely even knew the damn kids. Goku was in afterlife for years, not even seeing how his second son grew up. Not the same thing as when Superman was the only thing Zod wanted to rip apart, and Supes still fought in the City instead of luring Zod away from it.
@HolyknightVader999
@HolyknightVader999 9 лет назад
Lonewolf3002 Except for the fact that Goku was dead at the time, and by his return, everyone on Earth is dead. He couldn't do it like he and the other Z fighters used to-luring the enemy out of the city bounds. Buu even killed everyone on Earth while on the Lookout. So yes, Goku has that excuse, while Zod, after Superman thrashed his ship, looked for nothing else but vengeance and wanted Superman dead. Only Superman. Not everyone else. It wasn't until later on he used his laser eyes to target the humans. Kal-El was the one thing Zod wanted dead for destroying his chances of creating the new Krypton. By the way, that makes Superman REALLY short-sighted for destroying a ship that has the only chance of recreating Krypton within it. He could've just beaten Zod up and then told him to move to Mars, which is completely uninhibited and fresh for a session of terraforming. Mars is just like Earth in terms of a rock in space with decent size, and Superman could tell Zod that he could've just terraformed Mars into the New Krypton. Goku can only stand up to Buu as an SSJ3, and Vegeta's standing up to Buu is only limited until Buu takes off the kid gloves and starts to pummel him to the ground. He couldn't even win against fat Buu, who was less evil and savage than Kid Buu, and he was forced to blow himself up to try and stop him. The two of them couldn't stand a chance against Kid Buu's full powers unless Goku has some time to power up to SSJ3. All the enemies Goku faced at the time were nothing like Buu. Only one was close to it, and that was Cell. Everyone else would've died or fallen over had Goku given them a good punch in the gut. So no, Goku has an excuse, Superman doesn't.

@@codafett YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT. It isn't about the fictional choices that the fictional character took, it's about how inappropriate the scale of death and destruction in that film were for a Superman film. Superman has godlike powers and Saint-like you expect him to struggle and fight the battles human can't and in the end save us. Pretend it wasn't Zod in the film, imagine it was a meteor coming for Earth, Superman manages to blow it up but it still divides and crashes into Earth killing decimating 2 cities and killing 4 million people. That's not a Superman ending, that's a bittersweet Roland Emmerich ending. And that's a condemnation of how superhero films treat destruction as this one-off thing. 9/11 killed 3000 people and destroyed a small portion of New York City. It changed the United States and the world forever from that day forward, from cultural depictions to foreign policy. The impact of something like the destruction wrought in a Man of Steel is of another numerical magnitude entirely, The impact that it would have on the US and Earth is imaginable. You can't just move on from that.

Doesn't Captain America fall into that distinction? That like Super Man, he always tries to do the right thing, because he knows what it's like to be the weakest, and is suddenly gifted with such strength? I mean, he's also a soldier who knows that in a war, casualties are to be expected, and can be cold in his decision making, but in all he is a good person, easily the best in the Marvel universe, which is why he is regarded as such a symbol in the comics, and why his death in Brubaker's run is so poignant. I wonder why the Avengers don't seem to try and stop so much of the carnage in New York.

Also I would never believe superman would allow such a huge battle with Zodd to take place at the center of metropolis. I mean maybe they could've been like super destroys the world engine thing-a-ma-jigs and Zodd enraged by supes actions rushs after him and superman leads him away from the city. I just think thats what he met.

I know Landis is trying to talk more so about what superhero movies have kinda come to, but RIGHT YOU ARE, EBELE! I love hearing this because it simply hasn't been said enough. There was not nearly as much blood on Supes's hands as people kept saying. So many people failed to realize it that I almost wish MoS put in a post-battle scene that served as a kind of who-did-what-to-Metropolis analysis (even though I thought it was pretty damn obvious).

***** I see what ur talking about and i agree completely but, even then superman is a goody two shoes, In all actuality he would be more concerned with the people rather then Zod.I think supes would be thinking of away to lead zod out instead of going into an all-out brawl against him at the center of metropolis.Also as EBELE said he was a noob and this was his baby steps into the supes we all know today so that may play a factor as well.Zod is everything u said and more I just feel it could've been done better but all in all decent movie although I wish they could've focused bit more on clark u know? make me care about the man in the suit and maybe a few tweeks here and there.

DopexMojo I find it still hilarious that people are still trying to justify MoS' "plot conveniences, especially in light of the fact that C. Nolan was out-voted by Z. Synder and D. Goyer, who couldn't write a decent script if he was paid to do so (oh, yeah, he WAS). Check out "Blade: Trinity" as a reason why Goyer sucks as a script writer. Also, if you want the definitive MoS, check out John Byrne's "Man of Steel". Basically, it's Superman's first year, and he doesn't act like the "noob" THIS Superman is.

I gotta respectively say that in the MoS film the city didn't get destroyed by clark, in fact if you watch it then you would know that Zod pretty much does all the damage par one or two points in the movie, the only part i could see clark damaging the city was when his mother got attacked, and rightly so, that conveyed a lot of emotion in that part like any man would defend his own mother, step mom or not, the problem with interpretations is that once someone picks up an original, they are forced by public to interpret what they want in that, but the more versions come out, we will learn to accept different points of view and interpretations of that original, personally if people can't accept it then make your own version, don't tell people they are wrong because you believe you are right.
@SypherGamingNetwork
@SypherGamingNetwork 10 лет назад
And in all fairness, if two super powered Kryptonians were to be engaged in a fight, then i expect no less than half a city being destroyed, we are talking powerful aliens from another planet going toe to toe with powers beyond our belief or comprehension so of course buildings will fall and cars will be crushed, but ultimately he will still be there, hundreds may die, but millions more saved, i didn't go into MoS film to see zod and supes have a cup of tea and rant on youtube or do some ballerina ball room waltz, they came to fight, and fight they did.

Gavin Wilkins So you actually went to another comment to comment on it and say "I understood what you were saying," and then still didn't address any of what I said and talked about "Kryptonians" like they were real and the events of the film actually happened. If you're not talking about story structure/script, and instead are talking about the parameters of the events in the movie, you're not disagreeing with anything I'm saying or even having the same conversation. I'm getting pretty tired of explaining this to people. Down there Silverstroke explains this really well.

I talked about them as if they were real? Isn't that the point that we address something as it were to happen in real life, something as fictional as superman or superheroes in general is the best way to escape reality at times, story comes with the territory especially about superman , but I have spoke about his story and the changes made, I just think u like to avoid things very well behind a veil of disregard.

Playing the man of steel is not like the anyone can be batman idea, and nick cage isn't superman now is he? That's my point, they realize the mistakes and cast someone better, Cain was different cos he fit the type , the curl on his hair, the physique, if you look in to the past you would see they picked any physique, like superman one for instance, nower days super heroes need muscles, they need goof looks and sex appeal, they need to look the part as they are depicted in comics.

I absolutely agree with you, and you opened my eyes to a lot of points about Superman's character that I never really thought about. Yeah, I thought the destruction was neat, but too over the top in a Dragonball Z way. Even one line where he could have said, "Let's take this fight somewhere else away from these people. It's our fight, not theirs," with Zod saying, "No, they are ants to me. If you try to leave, I will destroy them until you return," THAT COULD HAVE justified all of that destruction! 2-3 lines! It really took away from Clark tearing up over having to snap Zod's neck to save like 4 people after blowing through buildings and letting millions die. He didn't need to throw Zod through buildings. He could flown high into the air or far out of the city and had Zod follow! It's not the destruction, or how over the top it was that bothered me. It just didn't fit. Like he's saying in this video, it just didn't drive the character and the story. Also...there was no fucking point of Kevin Costner dying... If he, a human, thought he could retrieve the dog and get back, then why couldn't Clark just do it? It's not like he was going to super speed and punch the tornado. C'mon, filmmakers. It's ok to write cartoony plot lines, but you still need flow and sense. You can't let Superman act all high and mighty at the end of the movie, protecting his identity as he thinks he saved the world while at the same time wreaking havoc upon it in a way that could have been avoided or at least justified to viewers. I just hope Batman talks down some shit to him and makes it known he fucked up. There's no Dragonballs in Man of Steel. Those people are gone, and it's on your hands, Superman.

a flawed human struggling to do what they think is right is way more interesting than an invincible, infallible hero. it's weird that he says he loves characters and finds plot boring while praising superman and disparaging spiderman or batman. those two especially are about people (and pathologies) interacting in interesting ways. superman stories are usually 'what contrived obstacles can we put in the way, and how quickly can he overcome them while still making it seem like a challenge?' i wanna have a rant about why spiderman absolutely trumps superman, but i guess that'd be pointless. still enjoyed the video. mostly good analyses

He is just a good natured guy, who tries to do the right thing, lots of people are like that, and they are still individuals human beings who can make mistakes or be wrong. Superman is the same, he is that guy who tries his best to do the right thing, just because he has empathy. Most people don't have hyper tragic back stories, but just normal, kind of up and down average childhoods, and still end up as fully developed individuals who have "scripts" and "dialogues"(aka a life, with probably a couple if hours of interesting content to share over a beer). a character doesn't have to be psychologically deformed or emotionally broken to be intellectually interesting (just like the people IRL don't have to), you can do a character study of guy like Batman or a guy like Clark and end up with 2 equally good pieces of content.Infact comics have done it multiple times for both. Bdw go read America Alien if u haven't.

My biggest problem with the movie is that except for the part with the oil rig, superman had no interest in saving anyone. With a fight in metropolis, he should have been losing the fight, killing himself trying to make sure nobody gets hurt. Sure he should be stronger and faster than zod due to longer exposure to the sun/atmosphere while his body was still growing but that number one priority should be keep people safe. And maybe even try to talk Zod down. How is it they didn't have a single conversation? How is it superman didn't talk to really anybody much and there were no relationships built or motivations revealed? I get that dialogue doesn't really sell tickets, but dang. Zero establishment of character? REALLY? At the very least, Superman shouldn't be jumping over gas trucks and letting them hit buildings and explode because it looks cool or "hey I'm superman I don't have to be effected by anything" You know what Uptomyknees I've said it before and I'll say it again, I sincerely wish you would have made that stupid movie. Dave Goyer did a good job with at least 2 batman movies and Zack Snyder can do fight scenes, but that mess was hot garbage. AND THAT FAMILY OF FOUR COULD HAVE EASILY GOTTEN OUT SAFELY IF THEY DIDN'T DECIDE TO STOP RUNNING AND HUDDLE IN THE CORNER.
