Regency Long Stays: Making My First Ever Stays!!!

I'm finally doing it. I'm finally making my first ever pair of stays! I have been sewing for a decade and I have never made my own stays or corset, but that changes today as I show you how I made Regency Long Stays. I’m using the Red Threaded Regency Long Stays pattern in size medium.
Long stays have been featured prominently in many recent regency dramas, probably because they look more of the shape that most people assume a corset looks like rather then short stays.
But, unlike Bridgerton might have you think, regency stays were supportive garments used to lift and separate the bust. The goal for a fashionable silhouette was a lifted, separated, round bust. The waist was essentially ignored.
As I said, I’m using the Red Threaded Regency Long Stays pattern in size medium. But I want to note that this pattern that I am using in the video is from before the pattern reboot, so if you have a newer pattern there are probably some differences.

I laughed out loud when you said "I am not making a mockup because I don't want to." The stays look great on you!

Your explanation for the reason around the silhouette finally makes sense to me. I know the French were going thru the Ae of Enlightenment, but I hadn’t connected style to that movement. I always wondered how they went from the full skirts of the late 1700s to the empire waist of regency and then back to full skirt and all the way to bustles etc. The regency styles seemed so strange and out of place until your explanation.

I also use thrifted bed sheets. You can't beat the price, quality and they feel so soft. I swear you can sew anything and it looks fabulous. Thanks for sharing.

I am making these stays right now (under cat supervision, too!) but from the revised pattern. The main difference is that the straps are separate piece so you can adjust the placement. At first, I wanted to be historically accurate and hand sew everything, but you're right about how tedious it is! My hand started hurting from so much backstitching, so I decided to use the sewing machine on anything that doesn't show. I am going to do hand sewn eyelets, though. I got the steel boning that Redthreaded recommended. I found a place on Etsy where you can just buy the pieces that you need, so it's not very expensive. I haven't finished sewing in the all the channels yet, but I like how it looks so far. Yours turned out really well!

That's wonderful! Cat supervision is a must. I was wondering what the differences would be in the new pattern from Red Threaded. The adjustable straps make a lot of sense. And WOW that's impressive that you set out to hand sew everything, but yes it get so tedious, even with a sewing machine. Best of luck with the eyelets! And cool, I'll have to look into the steel bonding, please let me know how you like using/wearing the steel boning. Thanks! 😊😊

Woo! I've also just recently made my first ever corset (after like maybe 6 mock ups though 😅) so I understand the fear but then also the pride after! Im not based in the US so I don't know whats available for you guys, but with regards to corset boning, any of what I've been able to find, even high quality stuff from corsetieres seems to always come in a roll. But I definitely found that once you'd worn the corset a couple of times the bones straighten out from your body heat anyway so it's totally fine 😊

Congratulations on your first corset!! That's awesome! And haha ok good to know it wasn't just the boning I bought and that it will straighten out. :)

,so if you have circular boning like that here's the tip put them in different in every other channel so like one up curving one down curving thats what I did and it works great!

What I found most difficult in stays/corset making is not really the sewing the bonning, but patterning and sewing the strange pattern pieces that are made from( especially the victorian one)😅
@HistoricalBelle
@HistoricalBelle Год назад
YES!! Some of those pieces are very odd stapes!

Regarding boning and zip ties that are too curved, two options. Alternate which direction the curve is going in each boning channel. Or iron on low and leave under a book to cool and it'll be flat.

Im really sad you were warned off from making stays/corsets. The actual sewing steps aren't that bad. Its the fitting that can be a beast.

I began sewing it and was like "Why was I so afraid of this?!?" lol I'm thankful I had a good pattern that fit well.

Music blares to loud between talking. Had to turn volume up and down and up and…you get my meaning. If you alternate the curves the stays get flatter

I think you might have been looking at the price of an already made corset from RedThreaded. The pattern for that I used in this video is $26.
