Agroforestry systems often seek to regenerate lands that have lost productivity. Adding compost, biochar, green manure and nitrogen-fixing legumes, and growing cover crops are ways to increase soil organic matter and microbes to improve soil health and sequester carbon. Equally important is keeping soil in place: Implementing earthworks such as contour barriers, swales and berms, contour ploughing and alley cropping, keyline design, terracing and windbreaks are foundational practices for soil conservation and health.
Dr. Debankur Sanyal is an Assistant Professor and Extension Soil Health Specialist at the University of Arizona. He is a soil biogeochemist broadly trained in soil health management for sustainable crop production. As a researcher, he seeks answers to the fundamental questions about soil carbon nutrient cycling in the agroecosystems at multiple scales, using approaches that range from laboratory-based experiments to extensive field trials.
