Puyo Puyo VS. Kirby's Avalanche is actually a pretty tough one for me. Puyo Puyo has the edge in originality, but Kirby's Avalanche still manages to hold strong thanks to the Kirby charm. I guess they both win if Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is suddenly placed into the picture, because that one was really kinda bleh (although the reference in Sonic Mania was genius). I feel both are great for their own reasons.
Puyo Puyo is actually the original version of the puzzle game. Kirby's Avalanche is a clone, and so is Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, of Puyo Puyo, however, with different plots and enemies.
That's because Kirby was actually portrayed somewhat similarly to Arle, given that Kirby didn't have a truly established personality at the time. The roasts Kirby does are just great though.
For me, it's probably gonna be Puyo Puyo, because I personally just like the music more than Kirby's, even though Avalanche's voice acting is just so bad it becomes good. Avalanche also seems a little lazy with some of the character portraits, like most of them are just the character's sprite, but enlarged. Also because it is an unspoken rule in the comment section, I like Mean Bean Machine less than the others because it reuses Carbuncle, for seemingly no reason, and I hate it's music (sorry to those who like it, I just don't.) I also don't like how when someone is doing a chain, it's either "Yippee!" or "Yeehaw!" It gets a bit repetitive after a while.
There's not even a reason to pick, both have amazingly snarky main characters, the same gameplay and even the same hidden options that even include a WIP Puyo Puyo 2 ruleset. Kirby's Avalanche gets an extra point for its ironically funny voice acting though. Only problem with Super Puyo Puyo is reading it if you're not fluent in Japanese since there's no translation patch, 'cause otherwise that's still perfectly playable.
Kirby's Avalanche is so much better because it closely resembles the JPN version, it gives you details on how to create chains, and it actually has player character interactions with the opponent like in the JPN version. MBM had none of that.
I like how one of the top five in Puyo Puyo is "LUL". (likely Rulue, who was called "Lulu" in the failed English translation) On the flipside, in Kirby's Avalanche, one of the bottom five is "LOL" (Lololo and Lalala).
While Kirby's Avalanche looks better, And doesn't have that much annoying compressed voices, Puyo Puyo shows more character expression, and the music is much better.

I kinda like the national SNES design better than what we got, but it makes sense. I think the only reason they changed it for us was because it looks more like an actual console other than a toy, and that’s what we wanted. As of the actual game it’s self, the only reason it as changed here was cuz Kirby’s a franchise that would appeal more to the west then a bunch of anime girls.
i say that kirby's avalanche is the best variant and mean bean machine is the worst avalanche actually varies from backgrounds, has character-on-character dialogue, and it's not just a blatant recolor of the original and it has voice acting. kirby is just a huge ass in the game which makes it funny puyo puyo is pretty good, it is the original, has character-on-character dialogue, voice acting. even though you can't read puyo puyo's dialogue you can tell it's pretty neat mean bean machine is just a blatant ripoff. it didn't even bother change the background, or remove carbuncle from the middle of the screen. the only voice acting is when you beat robotnik, when the "beans" are free which makes no sense that the ""beans"" are enslaved, and when you chain
Super Mario Bros 2 have an same case, in Japan is doki doki panic(If i don't mistake), and in the another parts from the world is Mario Bros 2 (ok is same because exist an super mario bros 2, but just apppear here as "Lost worlds" in super mario allstars)
The Japanese is Puyo Puyo An sega game that was published on the super famicon (nintendo) and the american one is kirbys avalanche an super nintendo title (fun fact; puyo puyo got an sequel meanwhile kirbys avalanche didnt got an sequel)
Dawn Wings Lunaleon is right. This series wasn't purchased by Sonic Team until 2001. So before then, Compile could put this on whatever platform they want.
Sega Sonic I don't think it changed something, the only Puyo Puyo game which was shortly a Sega exclusive was Puyo Puyo Fever the last Dreamcast game but since the Dreamcast failed it was ported to all other consoles a few months later
Just like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Nintendo attempted to localize the game for players/gamers outside of Japan. It's the exact same game but with major visual changes. And most of all: Kirby characters! Since when did Kirby can talk in the first place? This makes no sense.
Everyone, Kirby's avalanche and Dr Robotink's mean bean machine wasn't copied! Puyo Puyo came here in America in the arcade in 1991. And the sonic team and compile were afraid that people might call Puyo Puyo a ripoff from Kirby's avalanche and Dr.Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine so that's why majority of the games were in Japan and another reason is that the series wouldn't be popular here in America and Europe. So the games wouldn't come to America and Europe for a long time like Puyo Puyo 2 for Sega Genesis in 2008. And for Kirby's avalanche and Dr.Robotnik's mean bean machine they were replaced from the puyo puyo characters and the only one they didn't replace was Carbuncle and they replaced his name to Has Been. Not really my friend. They were replaced with sonic and kirby because back in the day those characters were very popular when they first came out. (Still popular today though).

Entre o Puyo Puyu eu gosto muito. Mas eu acho mais legal os gráficos e as musicas das versões americanas do Dr Robotink e do Kirby. Forma melhor adaptados e otimizados para os consoles. As musicas das versões ocidentais eu curti e acho mais legal que as japonesa de Puyo Puyo. As versões americanas foram bons portes.
Genesis version of puyo is better imo, the voices are bit crushed to hell and back but the music and graphics are a bit more colorful and sharper, plus the music in kirby's avalanche sounds awful.
