Your winch exploded due to the wienie 1/8" thick plate it was on. Winches partially use that plate to prevent the two halves from rotating all caddywhompus.
the mounting plate is why it failed...let the body of the which bend and brake.... mount the winch with thick plate or something thicker metal so it want flex any.
Use a block and takle when pulling anything with a winch it reduces the stress on the winch and doubles the pulling power. I've pulled 25k with a 12k badlands winch with no problems ever.
The only time I’ve seen one break is when someone tries using them as a snatch rope they aren’t made for jerking no winch is really . You mount them solid and use constant tension while winching and don’t use winch as a tow point they should last
My little brother used to ride he was like have to grow eyes in back of your head , he hit a patch of gravel just doin 30 tried correct it from coming from up under him and went over the handle bars and barb wire fence so needles say he picked a new hobby , we tried get him back to ride as he loved it , but I guess seeing life go before your eyes and a heavy ass bike flipping and you get a front row seat does something to you, his crazy buddy best fried laid it down a a few times has road rashes to as proof nothing crazy just bad luck ,

My dad still rides as much as he can all summer but he's a otr trucker and isn't home much my brother hasn't completely stopped riding bike but doesn't ride much now. I try to ride as much as possible and keep my head on a swivel when I ride because the only person's moves I can anticipate are my own.
Most winch manufacturers recommend getting a winch rated a minimum of 2.5 times the weight of the vehicle. If you put it on the F350, you will be going back to get winch number 4 in about two months (or less). Take the parts that you need off the red xj and relist it for sale. Somebody wanting to make an xj on 44s and 1 ton axles will buy it. Or if you don't want to go to that trouble, just scrap what's left.
I've had one of those winches for 2 years and it drags my suburban up red clay hills at my farm and moves what I need moved I can tell you that you have to watch angles of how and where you pull stuff on any winch you can break anything my dodge 4x4 tow truck has a 440 Holmes and a warn on the front winch pto style for over 20 years and I did break stuff all the time learning to use it, I learned you got to really take your time and go slow you are working with a lot of torque I could totally destroy my warn or the badlands easy getting them in a bind, but with that said I have noticed on the badlands if don't watch you can get the cable in one spot on the spoil while winching and bow the whole winch in the middle I changed to synthetic rope because of this that automatic line thing doesn't work if you use the cable on a long pull you have to stop and unwind and rewind it I really think that's what yours did
Do not put a shit winch on anything that can leave you stranded somewhere potentially dangerous, on trailer hell yeah and twice on Sunday. My motto is if you even have to question it, don’t bet you life on it... because you might!!
Run the red Jeep with 37x12.5s and exoskeleton cage. 😂 and the winch needs a thicker plate. I've ran the same winch for 6 years on a trailer and receiver hitch but my plate is ¼ thick.

Ok just wanted to help you out with your wench problem it's not the wench that's the problem it's the base that it is attaching to if the base flexes and the wench housing is not designed for the stresses it needs a solid base plate I use a ½"thick base plate attached my wench to it then welded the base plate to what ever I wanted it has now been on three trucks and is currently on my gooseneck trailer and I have pulled a 40' container onto the gooseneck trailer no problem also pulled an 1175 case tractor onto the trailer never an issue I've learned the hard way too it takes a strong base plate to handle the stress of a strong wench and it doesn't matter if it is harbor freight or a Warren if the base plate cannot take the stresses the wench will fail
The first thing I do with a winch REGARDLESS of who makes it, is take it apart and grease everything especially the planetaries cuz they all come with so little grease new!
The rc is literally the same winch. I'd bet money it, the hf, and smittybuilts are all made in the same factory. The difference is what you have them mounted to.
Steve: return that shit winch and replace it with a Rough Country one. Yeah, it's no big deal to run to Harbor Freight and get a new one when it breaks again, but real safety concern with that new one...what if you're doing a recovery and end up rolling the other vehicle because the winch snaps... and I condone all your antics, so that's saying something.
Must suck to have a crappy winch all the time to deal with! Just go buy a warn 8274 and be done with it already lol They are cheap good used.. I have used mine with NO trouble ever!

Crazy that wranglerstar just a few days ago did a review of a 12,000 badlands winch basically praising it. Lol. I used to have a cj5 all fiberglass with a 304 lifted on 35in mickey's. Everytime Steve makes a jeep video I miss that sumbitch! Lol. Whatever happened to the new shop?
