great video! could you answer some of my questions, I'm in my final year Chem E 1. How much much core theories and numericals do you use while working? 2. what percent of course content do you use in work industry? 3. I'm slightly weak on one subject, will it be troublesome?

1. I use a decent amount of core/theory, in everyday problem it's more general theory like PV = nRT relations, for when I'm doing a detailed analysis I might have to pull out my textbooks to get some formulas. 2. Maybe about 20% of the course content? It's hard to use EVERYTHING. Anything you don't remember, you can always Google again, and you'll also learn lots more on the job. 3. That's probably ok.. there's a low chance you'll use that specific subject on the job. As long as you have a good general understanding you should be OK. If it's something fundamentally important to chemical engineering then you could always practice more before working.

The book at the start is not for thermodynamics it is for mass transfer, Heat transfer, FM, mechanical operation but thermodynamics

Hi Shawn, ChemE student right here. I've felt the same way about pursuing this career and how simple would it be for me to switch up to a more heavily coding related career like CompSci. On the other hand I think that practical skills like those taught in my ChemE courses are really interesting and my knowledge might actually translate into some positive impact on climate change and environment. Do you believe these two disciplines have potential to merge? I am keen on knowing much more about coding and Data Analysis but not sure how worth it will it be in the end result. Also, do you apply coding knowledge at work? How much of a valuable skill is it for us in the industry? tyia

we use a lot of simulations like python, ASPEN , dwsim in college but MS excel is the only one we are going to use while working, is it true? which one are you using now?

Not at all, you will use a variety of softwares while you’re working most likely. But excel is definitely a big one. I use process modelling software, python and excel mostly

Assuming by the name, it might be less heavy on teaching about equipments and process controlling, and more about how large scale chemical reactions work? But it could be the same thing under a different name. If you want to know, try to find the curricula for both and compare.

From what I understand chemE actually goes into the chem and physics, as well as the equipment/design. It’s way more focused on making/operating/designing the equipment, making the processes, and modeling/designing physical phenomena. IE is more like an engineering-applied-to-business degree, from the looks of it. Whereas chemE can both do that as well as the engineering aspect.

Grade 12 student here, I was wondering does CE(Chemical engineering) need a Master degree to find a jobs/internships or can it be done with just a bachelors? Also this might sound really stupid but I was wondering if a chemical engineering is dangerous(like exposed to high amounts of radiation dangerous) when working at plants.

1) yes you can get jobs with juts a bachelors, plenty of them 2) there is lots of safety studies and measures done at plants to make sure you are protected as much as possible

all are good, just depends on where your interests lie.. think about where you want to work in the future. even if you end up not enjoying the course, that's all good info because you'll know NOT to go into that career path. make a best guess and move on

it depends on what your interests are. mech is a little more diverse, but if you hate mech design, then definitely consider chem E

Stay away from this useless major. Only go if you are sure that you or your family has contacts that would assist you to get employed in this field. Or depending on the place where you live and what ethnicity / Nationality you belong to.
