I made this. Just me, two cameras, the band and their manager on the road in Japan. First video I ever edited on my own. I got a bit carried away with transitions, hehe. Cut it in two weeks at MTV after hours when we got back. very 90s, but still holds up I think.
To clarify a few things from comments below. Yes the song and title are a homage to Prince. The video was shot in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. Quan is Vietnamese-Australian. Martin is Chinese-Australian. Ben is American-Australian. All 3 were born and raised in Brisbane
I remember back when this video was playing on Rage and Video Hits in the morning on Saturdays. It was the late 90s, the anime boom was just about to start when Neon Genesis Evangelion aired on SBS, video games were breaking into the mainstream off the back of Sony Playstation and JRPGs were the biggest genre in the industry thanks to Final Fantasy VII. Japan was the most fascinating place in the entire world to a teenage boy like me, and the fact that they were so well aware of this made Regurgitator even cooler than they already were.
I'll add that I actually f-ing hated this song (and the whole album) at first, as they had pivoted so hard from their earlier hardcore sound to this pop rock friendly sound... but I was 17 and stupid...))
my folks told me that when i was 4 i was obsessed with this song and would sit in front of the stereo replaying this song over and over again and looking at the cd cover lol. i guess this was the first song in my life that i loved haha. i fully forgot about this and listening to it again brought back the memories.
Yeah he is a gem of a dude, I messaged him ages ago about how much of an impact Beautiful Story had on me when I was a teen exploring my bent on existentialism/absurdism.
I miss the days when Powderfinger, Spiderbait, Jedediah and these guys were at pretty much every festival throughout summer backing up the internationals but still holding their own.
Holding their own, or showing up the internationals? I reckon the latter. Our musos might be less slick, less 'produced' but they're much better. To me.
My best friend sent me this album in 1998 when she moved back to Australia... I fell in love with this awesome music immediately, which at least in Denmark was way before it's time... I still have the CD, but it has been years since I've listened to it... But today I talked with another old friend and it all came back to me... Now there is RU-vid, and I thank you for this moment of nostalgia... :)
There is just no uniquely aussie bands like this anymore, these guys were amazing! Like the 70's the 90's really had some stand out musical acts, made going to Big Day Out and various other music festivals all the more worth it! Great memories! Amazing band!
+Paffster saw these boys live at Falls festival in 2012. Was fkn epic as all the teen bopper people left the dance area and was only 25+yr old's having a great time! Ahhh the sun burn!
try 50 plus .took our young fellas to a save the ABC in king George square in bris in 96 after little johnny howard took office and pounded them . great gig but the youngsters nearly pushed the temporary stage over good times
This is the direction Regurgitator should have pursued with vigor. Not the grunge indie vibe, that market was so completely saturated with bands. Given, that was the music that was popular at this time - but Regurgitator could have been a worldwide sensation in my opinion. Very talented musicians, and this song is so very, very fresh.
100% agree with you, but sometimes the magic for an album can't be replicated no matter how talented the artist, it's just a certain chemistry for a moment in time, can always dream of an alternate reality.
I know how you feel. The 90's were my teens and started the new millenium as a 20 year old. What a great era for music. This clip shows me and I also think that Regurgitator were ahead of their time by a good few years in all ways. Musically and culturally, especially.
***** Most definitely mate, such underrated band!!! I wish artists still created sounds like this! When this song came on my pre-recording of the 'Rage: Top 100 1998" it literally made my life.... and I was 4 at the time lol
I've seen Gurge all but one time in Adelaide, lost count now. Truly my fav band ever and every single time they love being there and the fans love them for it! Thanks everyone for commenting and THANK YOU Gurge for so many years of utterly amazing tunes and live shows.
I had the best time in Australia from 1978 up to 1998 would love to go back and do it all again, great music living was ezy I bought a great 2 story house pool out the back. I went back to see the old house and everything is gone all new housing estate built.
These guys are so awesome, Australia really does have some rippers, its a shame music today isn't as unique as these guys are, they actually seem to enjoy what they do, unlike the rubbish these days.
The commercial platform has gotten bigger meaning pushing a band/singer through the marketing machine carries a higher cost but it also has further reach/bigger payoff. It's a large investment for the record company so the template often pushes out shit so they can get a return. But like roidroid said, it's always been like this. Compared to 20 years ago it seems like the generic charting performers push their bit across several marketing channels in a coordinated campaign so you feel bombarded by a new release/tour or whatever. But the flipside is the less commercial stuff is so easy and cheap to access I don't know how it could possibly improve. *These* are the good old days.
3:30 Back in the day, when this song was played copiously on radio, I used to think that the "Thank you Mr DJ" part belonged to the radio station, rather than belonging to the song itself.
Sickest song I remember these dudes writing an entire album in a glass box in the middle of Melbourne XD listening in 2017? i think we can safely assume it wont date now yeah?
LOL! I thought that this tune was from PRINCE. I searched for it for ages on RU-vid but I could not come up with any confirmation. Then, I heard it on DOUBLE J FM and I looked at their "play list" to find that it was from this Group REGURGITATOR. I've heard of them previously, but I thought that their music was nothing but head banging rave / techno crap. I was so pleasantly surprised to be wrong.I love this tune and it has now been posted to my Group as one of my favourites. :)
Ugh, I miss the nineties so freaking bad! I used to see a gig every weekend! You name it.... Cosmic Psychos..the Hard Ons..the Meanies... Tumbleweed... Nursery Crimes...Root Beer....Fridge... Damaged....Blood Duster... I mean, I'm very happy that Carcass just released Torn Arteries! So REAL music still exists in 2021..... Thank fuck!
Back in '96, I was balls deep in to RATM, NIN, Deftones, Oasis, 311 etc. to my bluesy jazzy side like G. Love and Special Sauce, Medeski Martin and Wood, to my undying love for rap like 2Pac, Biggie, Tribe, The Roots. I also loved modern ska/punk like Rancid, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish and NOFX . All these indulgent name drops later is that Regurgitator was the first band I ever heard that combined every-fucking-thing I liked and they blew my balls off with Tu Plang. I'm high and drunk, Happy "2020 is almost 3 months to over" everyone!
@@kesiawhap2142 That's completely kickass, I'm jealous in the most positive way🤘 I'm American, so seeing Regurgitator live would have been some kind of extreme rarity that I would have never been able to make it to. I was only 15 in '96 so life circumstance probably wouldn't have allowed me into the show even if they did tour in the States back then.
AFL 360 brought me here i cant believe I had forgotten about this gangsta band for so long. I still remember watching them in the bubble with Jabba writing a album now that's reality TV i can watch
man I just want to recreate that sound at Good Things Sydney where the speakers were super loud and the bass was boosted to heaven, I missed out on the lyrics but damn that beat got me bouncing
All that proves is this song is still seen as an under-rated track!. Gurg were one of the biggest bands on JJJ from about 1995 until 1999. Black Bugs was also pretty big from memory it wasn't all SFNA !.
Cool rediscovering them .... First heard them on International radio . CBC Canada has radio stations from all over the world rebrocasting late at night. So it was just chance that I heard Polyester Girl one really late night. I wonder if they have heard Unknown Hinson's " Polyurethane" song . Funny stuff ....
1:43-1:51 Martin Lee checks out long haired girl with backpack, checks out her ass, is disappointed as she walks away then looks back and remembers hes being filmed and smirks, LOL classic.
Am I the only one who thinks Martin Lee was very unique guy. His looks and antics in this song was very lot of LOL moments. Too bad that he left the band and faded into obscurity.
I remember these dudes writing an entire album in a glass box in the middle of Melbourne XD Always be one of my favorite bands Gud Zo!!! You could film this at Strathfield station now 👍👍👍
