Hi Jens, how about Coltrane changes? For instance, on the third and fourth bar of an F blues blues, instead of F7 I would play | D F | Ab B | (all triads), to get to Bb7.
Thanks a lot for you channel, I have learned much from you but I just have to say...maybe its an American thing but your face is often too close to the camera! I find myself backing away from the screen in my chair - like when somebody leans too far in to talk to you. Gives me the creeps and makes me not want to view your vids even though they are so full of great information. I just had to say this.
From time to time i like to comment just to thank you for the amazing free work you do. I hope you have a pretty solid hard disk with everything saved in case anything happens (not wishing you bad luck ahaha) becouse what you have here is just so so important for the jazz comunity. Have a nice day Jens!
Sometimes with reharmonization you gotta be on your toes, because ii-V changes like the Ebmin7 Ab7 in the fourth example can throw you off to think it's going to resolve to a Db and make you lose your place, when it's just a chromatic tool to slide into Gmin. I hope more people appreciate the value of the information in these videos. Thanks, Jens!
Jens, terrific stuff here! I particularly noted what you said about playing simple lines over a reharm, as it vindicates my judgment. I've never considered myself to be too nimble or imaginative with single-note lines and, of course, the chord structure is always my focal point anyway, so I try to let a pivotal substitution or a whole reharm be the focus for the listener, as it is for me -- instead of my clunky horn-style "soloing". Not sure how it works out, but that's my goal anyway. ... Love your lines in these examples!
Thanks so much, Jens! Really helpful. BTW, I just heard about the Danish notion of "hygge" (did I spell that right?) Almost sounds like it might be related to vergnügen but really meaning Gemütlichkeit. Anyway, your videos lend a feeling of hygge (but without candles)
great lesson Jens, keep up the good work. I have one question, when did you start playing guitar? I'm 23 and I would say I'm on intermediate level, is it too late for me? when it is too late to master the instrument?
Thank you! Well, I started playing Jazz when I was 22 soit's probably not too late. That said, you should probably play guitar because it's fun to do and not to master it? 🙂
No worries, I was just pointing out that you might be setting yourself up for being miserable about your playing. You're better off enjoying the journey!
Let's say you are backing up a soloist and he/she starts doing these subs on an F blues - do you try to match what they are doing, or just play the standard blues changes to make the contrast come out more fully?
Thanks Rendy! I will probably make something like that at some point but I am not really sure what form would really make sense to you guys, especially since most people do not have an AX8 🙂
I am interested in how you dial your jazz tone? Amp type? EQ settings (bass mid treble)? effects (if any)? Do you use different settings for different guitars? Do you roll off a little bit your guitar vol and tone control? Thanks @@JensLarsen
In jazz, the one playing the chords is free to interpret the chord symbol and add the extensions and alterations that fit how he or she is playing. For that reason, I usually try to stick with the chord type and not specify the extensions like 9 or b9.
Nice lesson but please move away from the bottom right corner on top of transcriptions and music notes the red square "click now" - it drives crazy when you go trought the lesson !?!?
