I don't understand the double arsins for some performers. While, for example, Malta and Serbia are criticized for the excessive presence of backing vocals, Finland and Israel are not. In that case, does that mean it's okay? Where is the objectivity?

The pre-recorded vocals were introduced with the excuse that it was necessary to reduce the number of people on stage due to COVID, but I was pretty sure that this change wouldn't be temporary, anyway. It's one more feature imported from Melodifestivalen (just like the voting system and sequence). I agree with Georgina, though: all vocals should be live. 👍

I'm a big fan of Serbia this year and I think it got elvated further, but Finland OMG OVE LOVE LOVE

For Israel, no VOICE was heard!!!

So for me: First thing - Serbia jumped right back into definite qualifier for me after that clearer explanation of what this song is about. Just Wow! Finally the whole story of the song comes through. It all makes sense. I'm so happy cause it's my favourite this year. Otherwise my second fav, Alessandra, is solid and I just expect her to keep improving. Obviously Kaarija and Loreen go through, so those are my 4 songs that I like and are now definite qualifiers in my eyes. I did not like the Israel clip - where were the vocals? And why did we see a unicorn instead of a dance? Anyway, it's still a definite qualifier. I'm just sad Croatia is probably taking a spot from a great song (in my view Latvia, Portugal or Malta cause I think Czech Republic is going through). Another thing - like you I always liked the Azerbaijan song, it's my music. But watching this I was like, does this actually have a chance??? It is not as bad as I thought in the staging and cameras and is better than others (Ireland, for example). I'm so torn on NL - I want it to qualify for the sole reason that at one preparty it hit me so hard emotionally and no other song did that throughout the pre-parties I was at, but I'm worried it won't make it. It's also not there yet vocally for me. I wouldn't be devastated if Latvia missed out (unless it's because of Croatia). But yea, overall I'm still holding off predictions until we see final rehearsals. Just random thoughts in my head at the minute. I have 9 songs which are left to allocate - Probables for me are Switzerland and Moldova. That leaves 3 places. I say 9 because Ireland is definitely not qualifying. So fence for me, at the minute, are Malta, Latvia, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Portugal, Croatia and...astonishingly, Azerbaijan.

The key for the Dutch entry is 1,5 higher, it seems more comfortable for them. They also chose for a more softer approach

I think Unicorn's solo dance break is horrendous, she flops around so awkwardly I think she looks well but the camera work does not do it justice at all, it's too dark and just doesn't work. The impact comes when she dances with everyone else.

I think, personally, that pre-recorded backing vocals aren't cheating, when everyone is allowed to use them. For me, ESC is a song contest first, a singing contest second. Vack when we had a full orchestra playing the instrumental parts, it made sense to have all vocals live. For a while, we had a in-between situation, where amazing songs got ruined by the demand of all live vocals, and wasn't there a time when backing vocalists were behind a curtain doing the heavy lifting, while the pretty lead vocalist was standing on stage basically lip-syncing? And I recall a time when someone was denied the use of that looping thing where you layer live vocals on top of each other and create these amazing harmonies with one singer. The music industry and ways music is made and performed has changed over the years and decades, and the ESC has evolved to follow the times. I'm more annoyed by 90% dance - 10 % singing performances, which tend to always get high scores, not necessarily for the song, but for the bedazzled dancers. And yet, as long as the rules are the same for everyone, no-one is "cheating".

Something went wrong in the video, synchronising audio and video? At 9:30 (Switzerland) things go haywire when I'm watching. Update: when watching on my phone, everything is normal. When streaming to my tv, things go wrong. So has nothing to do with your video. Great reviews again BTW!! 👍

I just wish we have more extra settings for Portugal's staging. I imagined it could involve 2 sofas and cages with cabaret dancers inside on the back just like movie scenes from Chicago or Moulin Rouge

Glad to see Finland seems to be growing on you :). Netherlands changed the key, yeah, to make it easier for them - though randomly they took it up rather than down ..

I just compared this Netherlands clip to the official video. It sounds like they've put the song up in pitch for the performance. So that means the male singer is singing parts of the chorus an octave lower than her rather than in unison. You'd think all this would gave been thought about before the track was released, ie how they will it together. I assume the song was just too low for her, but by bringing it up he has to switch to chest voice much more.

Yeah, the Netherlands have lowered the pitch for both singers. She is now singing the same notes he was singing from the music video, and he's singing much lower. To be honest though, even in the studio version, he sounded far more comfortable down there either way. Their song is still in C Minor, and naturally with pretty much all minor chords it is going to favour a deeper and richer sound, so ultimately I think it was a good change for them to make, but there's absolutely nothing technically demanding in the revamp. But the melisma "ahh" is following: A flat, G, A flat, G, F, G, F, E flat, F, E flat, etc. In studio version the guy is getting those notes in his head/mix, but I reckon he perhaps isn't as confident doing it live (mixing for beginners as a male singer in a live performance is not a safe choice lol). She's doing some tongue retraction and lowering of the larynx to try to push down into that deeper sound to compensate it though, sometimes you can hear it trying to push back up to a more natural position so she's definitely out of her comfort zone.

Czechia has moved up on my list after that! They look and sound great. Finland is my favorite, he hasn't changed much as the formula of the green jacket and dancers in pink is working so well for him. I really love Serbia/Luke as that's the music I typically listen to, I hope he does well.

I completely agree about the backing vocals! I think they should allow more people on the stage so more countries would be willing to do live backing vocals. Or maybe they could make a rule where backing vocalists don't count as part of the 6 people or something. Idk I just feel like Eurovision us going down the same route as K-pop where almost nothing is sung 100% live anymore.

I was never a fan of Sweden. I think you can always judge a performance better when someone is singing live. The problem with backing vocals is that you can't hear their proper voice and when they do sing they tend to strain to be heard as it's so loud. Unicorn has definitely gone up in my estimation but so has France's entry. Let's see how the vocals are for that one.

Malta - it cant be on the track, if a backing singer is singing the main vocal they have to be there, although they don’t have to be on camera. Btw love how you didnt notice the backing vocals performing the main vocal in Finland.

I feel like the lighting is off in many of these. It often looks too bright, flat and unatmospheric. Hopefully that's just for rehearsal purposes or sth.

Moldova's sound isn't similar to Ukrainian. it's cultural heritage of the whole region up to the Balkans. Moldova had powerful folk song in 2009 (Hora Din Moldova). you'd say it's Ukrainian but in reality it uses dance popular on Balkans and music closely resembles Ukrainian folk tunes. You'd enjoy the power of singer voice there, she slayed it.

I don't really see how prerecorded backing vocals are any different than the already allowed hidden backing vocalists. You aren't supposed to be use them for the main vocal anyway, and that's the real problem.

Song representing Serbia still makes me feel anxious and angry…. Too dark for me. Germany’s entry 🩸✨is what it is and does not make me feel that way.

I absolutely cannot comprehend that someone with the moniker honest vocal coach watches israel & fails to see/hear that this is just a bit of ground mopping,(copy-paste Spain from last year) not one single note was sung! ' On the drama of the Netherlands: Yes, that was because of the two(2) bad pre-parties, others were also much less than ideal during those,(why do the sending broadcasters allow those bad acoustics?) but inside the Netherlands this caused a bit of a tempest because there is no national final. So people started to bully Dion & Mia, but used that to protest the "dictatorial" manner in which songs & artists are chosen. Which is grossly unfair, it's not like they can help that. So there are still people/bullies going on about this. I think it's great we don't have a national song contest, because those bullies would vote for joke entries like 'de toppers' again & give us another longest NQ streak in ESC history. As Duncan said; "music first." Anyway, there was a change in the song. Netherlands is better with that keychange

Serbia is the overall best and most original entry. It hasn't the best vocals. It doesn't come as a typical song. It doesn't want to be a party song. But it wants to be a creative, good song and therefore it's better than the rest due to originality and message. Sweden is the typical "cold-calculated-to-win-jury-vote"-entry that was solely produced for the single purpose to win, not for the purpose to simply write a good song. Everything about this song was designed to aim at Eurovision win like in 2012, and you can feel the calculation behind this, as it is structurally and element-wise the same as Euphoria, even the whimmering in the bridge, Loreen again standing on a square doing her weird dance moves, again. It's good, but boring somehow, not very original, and again, basically the same kind of song as Euphoriaaaaa (Tattooooo). Finland is the typical party-televote-winner-entry that is not a good and not a creative song in itself, but aimed at entertainment, pretty much like Norwegian's entry from two or three years before that also won the televote. Viewers love non-original party songs with the most simple repeating melody. That's sad. Yeah, that's it. All other songs won't win and this year the only two interesting songs are from Serbia and Sweden, while Sweden uses the "normed" massproduction to "please" as many as possible, while Serbia is more original and more creative.

In the clip for Unicorn she is not even singing, just dancing... And Loreen is overrated, Tattoo is a song that does not really fit her voice, sounds like a screaming mess in the chorus.
