Rehousing a Behringer SF300 (Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz Clone)

Here's how I moved my Behringer SF300 over into a metal enclosure.
Music:
Tranquility by Kevin MacLeod

License: creativecommons.org/licenses/b...
Timecodes for scrobbling through if you want to skip the twee build process video and just get to the wiring diagram / demo:
Wiring: 10:00
Demo: 15:50
The bypass remains buffered, using a momentary footswitch and off-board jacks for the audio and power. The pots and toggle switches are stock.
Rehousing Behringer pedals is a much-discussed topic in the pedal world, as their circuits are often affordable spot-on recreations of vintage / hard to find / expensive pedals, but the cost is brought down by the build quality. See the JHS Show vlog for more on that. After the HM300 (A pretty good HM-2 clone, but not perfect) the one that gets the highest praise for its sound is the SF300 - it's spot on. There is no difference. The bass response is there, it stacks well, the boost function is powerful as hell and Fuzz 2 instantly transports you to Dopethrone territory. Wonderful stuff. Rehousing it has always been a goal of mine as I like to screw around with cheap pedals, much more than I do buying vintage ones.
Important things to note:
Pay attention when wiring the power. Running reverse voltage through a circuit isn't a great idea (I fried another SF300 by screwing up here.)
If you do want to do offboard pots, it's 50Ka for the volume and gain and 50Kb for the bass/treble.
If I was to do this again, I might put the jacks/power supply underneath the PCB rather than between the PCB and the top of the case, as that might allow for top-mounted jacks / give more clearance on the shafts for knobs. Hee hee.
As there's not a full written guide anywhere as far as I can tell, is that something you'd be interested in? Let me know and I can put one together.

I paint my cases using car paint and graffiti type techniques like splatter and colour fade. I label the dials using that old fashioned letraset/Decadry rub on lettering, then add a clear lacquer coat. I mean if you're going to change the case it may as well look mad too. Looks like I was lucky to buy an FZ-2 on impulse in the mid 90s ( for less than £40 GBP I think) before any kind of envy kicks in you should know; there's a hidden gem on the Behringer clone, something you can't do with the FZ-2 ! slowly slide from fuzz1 to fuzz2 and you can actually get it to sick in between & select both modes at the same time! so if you are "stuck with a clone" it does come with unintended bonuses. You're welcome FuzzSiblings.

Great idea! I think I'll re-house mine. I think the tab you marked "structural" for the power supply is likely power from the battery. If you had the power jack removed, I think you'd find that the battery then makes connection tot he positive tab. Not a big deal if you don't plan to use a battery in the re-housing.

Covered mine in duct tape, put a sticker on the Behringer logo and super glued all the seams and the sticker. I actually use the boost which is actually really fantastic because of the tone controls. I use it in front of an Orange MicroDark and it’s amazing.

Thanks for the kind words! For the mode switch, I drilled a hole a little larger than the shaft of the switch, then used a square-edged file of the same width to extend that into a rectangle.
@jakedibiase7404
@jakedibiase7404 3 года назад

@@voidguitar Can I use the 1/4" jacks I use for guitar? I have a bag of them and I can't seem to find the housed ones recommended in the manual for less than 20$ since they come in bulk. Also, do I need to get a separate ac adapter plug or can I use the one on the sf300? and if I do is there a specific one you recommend?
@voidguitar
@voidguitar 8 месяцев назад
@@oliverlangrall2014 I don't know what 1/4" jacks you use for your guitar, so I'm not really sure how to answer that. But if they're open jacks, those are a bit bigger and so may be a little harder to cram into the enclosure. In terms of the AC adaptor plug, as long as it's outputting centre-negative 9V and you've wired the power up in the same as it is with the on-board DC jack, you'll be ok. It's the same as any other pedal.

TO BE CLEAR, the Boss Hyper Fuzz was a clone of the 70's SUPERFUZZ pedal...... AND HEY, man, don't sneeze at the Orange enclosure, I have seen original versions of the original 70s SUPER FUZZ////// THAT WERE ORANGE. You seemed to have missed part of the whole history of this pedal there. but hey! cool idea! The Behringer Clones of old synths and pedals are the bomb. This pedal goes in and out of stock constantly, one of the best kept secrets of fuzz pedals. TRY not to RUIN IT! SHHHH! half kidding . Cheers from texas , mate.
@voidguitar
@voidguitar 2 года назад
I didn't mention it in the video, but yes, I was aware that this was a clone of the Superfuzz. I focused on the Boss pedal because that's what the Behringer is a closer clone of in terms of control layout. While boss's core tone does come from the Superfuzz, their clone was a little more transformative - the FZ-2's scooped mode is much nastier than the original Super Fuzz's. And that's why a lot of people, myself included want this pedal - horrid satanic doom metal. When it comes to the orange enclosure, I have no real issue with it. It's more the plastic that just feels cheap, hence the rehouse to a metal enclosure.

I totally murdered a SF300 trying to do what you did there. I convinced myself I could fit it into a spare Boss type enclosure that I had and I completed sodomised it. Really, really totally ruined a perfectly good dirt pedal. £15 and a couple of hours wasted, hey ho…… I might try again now, though. What are Hyper Fuzz’s going for now? £200? Even with eBay fantasist pricing they are dead spendy. Great video, btw. It’s got this ASMR quality to it, too. What axe is that? Epi SG Jr?

@@voidguitar TY for all your help. Is there a work-around in cabling options to deliver a pure signal when the pedal is not in use? A friend told me you write a column in Guitar Player magazine. Is that correct?
@voidguitar
@voidguitar 3 года назад
@@camilo1455 You could indeed do a workaround, however you still need the momentary switch as well as a true bypass 9 pin 3PDT, when the SF300 stops receiving power it turns 'off', in that it flips the momentary switch again effectively. So every time you plug in your pedalboard to power, you need to hit the momentary switch to ensure the fuzz is 'on', so that when you use the 3PDT to switch to it you don't just run signal through the 'off' pedal. You could use a combo of the on-board LED and one wired to the switch to keep track of things. With using a footswitch for the two fuzz types, sure - that should work. just use a multimeter to figure out what connections the stock slider switch is making and replicate those with another 3PDT. And your friend is almost right, I write news, features and guides for Guitar.com/Guitar Magazine :) No DIY stuff though

does this pedal stack well?
@voidguitar
@voidguitar 3 года назад
As well as any octave fuzz, really. My experience is that too much gain after it (at least from pedals) will mangle the sound in a fairly unmusical way - but a boost / overdrive / another fuzz / a Rat before it kinda gets you a nasty octave fuzz blended with a thick overdrive, with infinite sustain. Sunn O))) + EQD's Life Pedal is effectively a Shin-Ei FY-2 (the thing the original boss was cloning) after a Rat, so if you're looking for a pairing for it, go with any Rat-like pedal and you will be immersed into drone doom bliss
@-processdrone-
@-processdrone- 3 года назад
I'm gonna go with "No" (except in boost mode which is fine) . I have 11 fuzz &/or distortion pedals (left after clearing out) and this stacks the least well of all of them. You've got to want the tone this offers at cost to all else.... and sometimes I definitely do.

I'm a music tech, I use my knowledge to build my own custom gear, that's not commercially available and rehouse flimsy stuff to take on the road. I perform soundscapes using tape synths and pedals. This is only possible by building, repairing and hacking old gear. Its part of the process. Enjoy what you do, I hope you're very accomplished, I'm sure you've reached the pinnacle of your career in music, you must of, having time to waste, critising someone else's musical style. Have a nice day.

Why do people turn stock cars into street machines, customize guns & guitars? Because its a primal urge to make what is usually a generic clone of a clone into something uniquely theirs. Behringer SF is a prime canidate. The circuit is good in this one & @ the price they can churn em out a total bargain. But the enclosure is about as appealing as dying of terminal cancer. I'm transforming mine. Why? Well, cause I can. I enjoy it. & Its visual alchemy. Literally turning $#!t into GOLD

Well, the pedal's way more durable now. And I personally prefer how a metal enclosure looks to an orange plastic one. And it's a learning experience for all involved!

@@venomoverlord7016 there'll be a difference in sound when the plastic enclosure cracks in two and the pedal breaks...

Venom Overlord Why would you want to change the sound? The sound is the whole point of getting the pedal in the first place. Cillian is making it cool looking and sturdy.

The case is ABS plastic, you can pretend that's flimsy but on the other hand your lawn mower is also ABS plastic and gets stones hurled at it at high speed by whirling blades and you never thought to rehouse it in metal once. Rehousing a pedal really is a personal taste thing and that's fine, let's all have different personal taste, I mean there are people out there who hate this pedal and buy a blues breaker clone instead. we vary.
