This video follows Clarissa Esguerra, Assistant Curator, and Melinda Kerstein, Mount Maker in the Department of Costume & Textiles, while they get a mannequin dressed and ready for the exhibition "Reigning Men". The ensemble shown here features a a silk embroidered coat that was made around 1800 in France.
The exhibition "Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715-2015" explores the history of men’s fashionable dress from the eighteenth century to the present and re-examines the all-too-frequent equation of “fashion” with “femininity.” It's on view at LACMA through August 21, 2016.

What an absolutely beautiful coat. Sometimes I wish we still had that level of craftsmanship in our clothes.

You wouldn't be able to afford it anyway

We do . . . if you can pay Dior, Chanel, or Vaulthier prices. If you look at many antique clothes, as I do, for all the classes from the Middle Ages on, you quickly see that that the poor did indeed stitch everything by hand, but they had the cheapest fabrics, which, nevertheless, wore better and were vastly more comfortable than synthetics today. Most were hurriedly and none too carefully stitched. Still, I'd rather wear the garment of a poor woman in 1400 than the cheap clothes today, which I have to wear because I can't sew nor can I afford the fabric that would make it worthwhile.

@@jan-nn9ix Well there’s no difference between suits then and suits now. Some are cheaper; some are more expensive.

@@fabianalfonsoooo idk what that all means but the oils on our hands and skin will deteriorate the clothing- so if they are authentic it's a miracle it survived all this time anyway so touching it is endangering the fabric now they could be remanufactored to look like originals in which case touching then wouldn't be a worry. If not it is a historic artifact and should be handled with care as any other object would.
