personally, if I made a game that was set in a place I've never been to, I would do heavy research on the place. for example, I would look for information about Japan, talk to people from there or who lived there at some point and then apply these studies to the game (and ask fans for tips on what can be improved)

I never understood why Osana was the first rival for pretty much the reason you said. It feels like she should be closer to Hanako, not only in terms of closeness but how much time she spends around Taro. It seems like it’d be harder to get her alone or screw up their relationship than the random cooking club or occult club girl he met 2 days ago.
I dont know, yandere dev mentioned that senpai has a reason for feel in love of all the rivals exept hanako, maybe for osana's insults but i really dont know, maybe you can ask to yandere dev about that
@DX-222 That's not gonna happen. For one, because he skeevs me out and for two, he has a history of not taking questions like that well. As for your explanation, that's not impossible, but it still makes minimal sense. If their relationship is so soured that her death doesn't affect him as much as girls he met that week, and if it's so easy to break their bond with what would mostly be mistakes (that Osana apologized for, no less), then its weird that they're hanging out at all, not to mention weird that he'd accept her confession. Unless he just doesn't have a spine, at which point that's another point for "Why Are We Supposed To Be Attracted To This Person?"
@@bluebay1031 i dont know, yandere dev said that senpai has a deep story but it will be revealed with the pass of the weeks so maybe we will know when more rivals will added, also respect to yandere dev's bad behabiour i know one time i send him a mail with lots of suggestions, most of them were weird but other ones were bug reports i send him that to the fan mail part because the suggestions are sended on reddit but i dont have reddit so i send him that as a fan mail he answer me, after i decided to send another mail with bugs and good suggestions in the fan mail part, he didn't answer me i decided to send him again the mail and he didn't respind me again and last i send 3 bug report in one mail in the bug report part he didn't respond me is like after that mail he decide to avoid me
I wouldn't limit myself to doing something that takes place in different places just because I've never been there, I'd just do my best to study the location and then implement it. so it wouldn't hurt to keep Japan as the game's location (and kind of the purpose of the game is to parody anime and stuff from that culture of anime)

The problem with yan devs writing is that he did absolutely no research into the actual culture of Japan and only relied on the common anime stereotypes, making the writing falter heavily. As long as she does some research into the culture of Japan, her new story can easily be implemented into Japan in a completely respectful and inclusive manner

Juxtaposition *can* definitely work (Madoka Magica is a prime example), but the difference is MM keeps the cutesy magical girl aspect as a shell, with it slowly going deeper into a cesspool as the story goes on. By contrast, YanSim is a blend of stereotype and subversion, and not a very seamless one. It’s hard to take a murder game seriously when one of the core mechanics is a panty shots and most of the rivals are typical shonen love interests through and through. There’s minimal room for subversion when you keep playing into the stereotypes.
You should keep the school uniform. But you can have the characters in their clothes outside of schools when you go shopping. And you would have 2 choices. Follow them, talking to them or keep shopping or working.
For me, I would rework several rivals. If I was the dev, id keep Kokona as the "tutorial" week rival, which after that week, Oka would be the official first rival. I'd also replace Taro's sister with something unique: a male rival. But the twist is he's an extremely protective best friend who won't let girls get close to Taro due to the past week girls ending in disaster through your actions. He also has a secret...he has a crush on Ayano. The kicker is his Friday confession won't be a confession to him, but a confession to YOU. If you don't eliminate him by Friday, he will invite you under the cherry tree and "eliminate" Ayano since the guy is severely mentally unstable and if he can't have her, no one can. So on this week, the roles are pretty much reversed where YOU are the rival. Also, I'd rework the Nurse rival to not be in love with Senpai, but she is extremely clumsy at her job and is poisoning senpai with medicine. Senpai will have a bad cold that week and go to her every day for daily cold medicine, but she doesn't pay attention and always gives him the wrong stuff. If you don't eliminate her, Senpai will OD on Friday. The adult teacher I'd rework to be a teacher that for some reason doesn't like Senpai and wants him expelled. She will sabotage his grades and make him stay after class or unfair punishments. If you don't eliminate her by friday, she gets Senpai expelled. I also think these rework will break the repetitive cherry tree confession plots and give the game more variety
This pose definitely looks a lot more fluid, you did very well! I also like the inclusion of the under sleeves and tights, it adds a lot of personality to her character and makes her feel like she could actually be a real person. Also I’m a sucker for those folds on the shirt around the elbows 😩😩😩💜💜💜💜
Not taking place in Japan still makes sense! Yandere is a japanese word, but it's also just a universal concept. It's like having a karate class in America. Yandere just means "love sick", and you can be love sick anywhere.
Her tights and sleeves look so nice. I love the pallet you used. It gives her the vibe that she’s becoming Taro’s shadow while they’re friends. I also like the inclusion of the mechanics with the characters. It really fleshes out their place in the story.

When I was in college, I was wearing large demon horns and a victorian looking coat, and I had a very shy but very cool goth girl run up to me, cover me in compliments and run away saying she is too anxious to get a response. That was the cutest interaction I've ever had TwT

Taro being a more flirtatious guy and is just awkward I think could lead to so much more interesting things I’m just imagining Ayano laughing for the first time because Taro tripped on a banana peel while trying a pick up line. I’m also imagining Osana teasing him for all of his mishaps Edit: also Oka not covering herself up is a little weird since being shy doesn’t mean showing less skin, and also in the game I don’t think she could wear a longer skirt because the short skirt is the schools uniform. Also yandev probably didn’t think of that

what’d id do was keep it at japan, id research the place too imo when reworking/designing a game you should keep the main traits and elements of said media because redesigning a media is as it says, redesigning, changing the place entirely would screw with the plot itself since the game is based of a literal word in japanese and the characters themselves are named after japanese words (albeit very poorly 😭) they might start to seem like japanese people touring another place if their ethnicity, names and other parts of them arent changed if they’ve lived their entire lives in newyork ykwim!!!
I think the story is very creative and well-thought out, and the design takes that beautiful mist-like aesthetic her original version has and amplifies it into something solid. Looking at the two side by side even makes it look like a natural evolution from high school (the original version) to college (your version). It's very nice. Also, the way Taro and Oka get together is sweet.
Its really refreshing to watch these videos and not listen to someone trying to start drama, or addressing drama, (Wont name the youtuber) and your redesigns look so good! And yknow genuinely hoping you'll ask to desigh side characters who dont matter like Sakura Hagiwara( I forget her last name) even though shes not a main character. Shes just so sweet and has a sad backstory that i really think you could work off of

Just on the setting conundrum, it is quite literally impossible to make the setting ambiguous as different locations have different cultures that are so distinct, it would be impossible to, even if the location Was undisclosed, not be able to pick up at least the country from subtext. What you may want to do, similar to San Fransokyo in Big Hero 6 or Mumbattan in Spiderverse, you can merge the two cultures to make a fictional, hybrid city?
I really liked the video, redesign and rewrite! But if I may, I'd like to give some criticism. The headshots speedpaint was very fast paced, whereas the full body one sometimes looked like nothing happens. To keep the visuals interesting, I'd suggest spacing it out a little better and fastening the full body speed draw and maybe cutting out parts where you were not putting the pen to paper. Again, just my opinion and you may take it with a grain of salt, but I thought I would address this so that you can grow as a RU-vidr/editor of your videos
hi! this is the first vid ive seen of yours, but ur art is beautiful! one tip i have, the sailor uniform is mainly used in junior high school now adays. It was used in High school and middle school in the past, but has changed. i love this rewrite of oka, she feels more like a real person rather than a character!
Using real people poses as a reference is one of the reasons my characters look so stiff. Generally the more stylised your style the most you should amp up the pose, what works (worked? Haven't drawn in years honestly) for me is when I build the skeleton I make the backbone as extreme as I can (experiment with various shapes maybe make squiggly lines -always remember it should be a backbone though, so extreme curves but no loops lol- and create some simple characters around it as a training tool) Timid, melancholic and awkward characters are the hardest to not make stiff because you want them to take up as little space as possible without looking like a column, maybe giving bad posture a la Ghoulia Yelps would help 🤔 For same face syndrome you can - start with a basic shape: you seem to like rounded faces, turn it to the extreme (with rounded hair, rounded body shapes) try a diamond shaped person, a square shaped one, a triangle shaped head with round facial features etc. -don't focus on making your character "pretty" or "look like you art/style" focus on making them make sense (a blunt character drawn in squares or on the contrary like you like it really rounded and bubbly but with a pragmatic expression) - reference pictures and make caricatures of them (don't be afraid of being offensive or hurtful, no one but yourself has to see those sketches and you can burn them afterwards( Bonus tip: draw other perspectives, I realized I cannot for the like of me draw people in profile because I have no clue what the anatomy of the skull looks like from that side. Also working with different levels of realism can help you art look both more tangible (when drawn from realism) and more dynamic (when done more stylised)
I’d study the location of what ever my story would take place in. Like let’s take me for example, although the world my main stories are taken place in are a different planet (that is an huge animal paw print lol).I still keep the irl country/state names , like the United States, and California. Although, I’ve only been to three states; I still want to make some of my characters go to other states (like North Carolina, and New York) which I haven’t been to yet. So, I try to research stuff about them, and add them
I think the idea that you shouldn't write or feature places you've never been to before is extremely limiting and honestly just a bit stupid,. like yes of course yandere dev didn't do a lot of research but I don't think that should equate to "you shouldn't do it at all" when all he had to do was research. japan/anime is very obviously a core inspiration for this game and when re-imagining it I would prefer to see people expanding on that and make it more japan appropriate instead of dropping it as a setting entirely. but hey that's just myop, i honestly wouldn't mind seeing a re-imagining taking place somewhere else either. but also like imagine tho if I where to make a super American character and then call them eggplant.
The fact everything in this games really sexualized is off to me. I really dont care if they're of age, it doesent change the fact it feels like a fetish gratification game. And that sucks because I really liked watching playthroughs of this as a kid. Haha. Ha. My favorite rival had to be amai(I think thats her name I suck with names) sweet cottagecore kinda aesthetics are my weakness I just wanna bake cookies with her 🥺

I LOOVE YOUR TAKE ON HERR i was absolutely in love with her when she was introduced in the game,i think she is the most adorable rival,but it did make me mad that yandev didnt do more with her,,so i like how you did her personality also,makes her relatable in a good way for people that has been through the same stuff and is also into "weird stuff" (like occultism). I wanted to say this because as i like oka..she made me feel like i was a stereotype,kind of..so im happy you made her empowering!
