Written and presented by Steve Hewlett, the series is told principally through the first-hand testimony of those who were there: ex-royal advisors, editors, photographers, journalists, royal correspondents - and an enormously rich archive.
This episode examines how, after the tragic death of Princess Diana, Prince Charles hired a new type of royal press advisor in the form of spin doctor Mark Bolland. Then director of the Press Complaints Commission, Bolland got to work rebuilding Prince Charles's public image.
His main challenge was to create a degree of public acceptance for the by now non-negotiable Camilla Parker Bowles, but his controversial methods were not popular amongst other royals and courtiers.
The British Royal Family is a global institution, admired and celebrated around the world and currently enjoying a revival in popular opinion.
From the pomp and pageantry of the Cambridges' fairytale wedding, through to the birth of Prince George, the announcement of another royal baby, and most recently, the success of Prince Harrys Invictus Games, there is a new generation of Royals on show. Unlike all their predecessors the young Royals appear comfortable with the cameras relaxed, informal and self-deprecating. The message is a new monarchy for a new age.
It is all a far cry from the nightmare of the 1990s where, throughout the so called war of the Waleses, the bitter divisions within the family played out in the full glare of the worlds media. Indeed so acrimonious were the rivalries, they threatened to undermine and destabilise the entire institution.
But it was the tragic and untimely death of Princess Diana in 1997 that would prove to be the nadir of the familys relationship with the press and public. Widely perceived to have played a part in her tragic death, it also marked a turning point for the press and media. Something had to change.
Through interviews with those directly involved on all sides, writer, broadcaster and Guardian journalist Steve Hewlett tells the inside story of how the Royal family set about rehabilitating its battered public image following that devastating decade in this two-part landmark series.

“The press has lost its moral compass”. HA...you should see what they’re doing in 2020

I don't think the Royal family had any idea of how popular Diana really was, till her death.
@kitty6720
@kitty6720 2 года назад
That's true, because they knew & saw a side of her that she'd cleverly hidden from the media. Being PR-savvy woman she was, she knew how to project herself to the media to get the coverage she'd wanted. Which is why people should stop idolizing her as some perfect creature she never was. She was great, no doubt, in many ways: her beauty, philanthropy, PR-skills, but humans are complex, and so was she.

Isn't that part sad they never will. One of the reasons I took down my social media it's like everybody I know is dying and everybody talks to them as if they are still alive I don't know it's just weird to ME

Gone but not forgotten - never will her presence be unimportant - and her real story must be told. Does anyone really believe that photographers trying to get photos killed this lady? If so: Think again- think more deeply, more seriously please+ ( and that means you too, Prince Harry+)

Her legacy is forever. And her story will continue to be told. Even if it triggers the side-chick Camilla fans.

Penny Junors really want us to believe that Charles didnt use her as nothing more than PR for him? Seeing how easy now at days writers and journalist sell their principles for access? Who is she trying to fool?

Keyser94 yes I agree in the interview she tripped over her words constantly, mmmm she didn’t come across as credible in my opinion, she wanted to make money and her own mark in this A moral industry.

Diana is the Queen of people's hearts, she belongs to all people. Charles and Camilla belong to each other, they deserve each other. Does England deserve them?

Piers Morgan has a positively sick obsession with the BRF. I don’t believe it’s even about a job well done or getting the story for him. Ppl shouldn’t encourage his irrational behavior bc for Piers, sadly it’s like a personal sickness. It seems that he simply can’t control himself. He is sure to eventually cross a line & do something unforgivable that he can’t come back from-& it’ll likely happen soon. As he appears currently more focused on the RF than ever before. I believe he’s already gone to far. Many times. Not only by invading privacy & passing along his personal opinions, rumors & gossip as reporting. But also by knowingly, purposely creating & adding to the extremely serious issue of FAKE NEWS. But I know many other journalists & paparazzos have done the same things &/or have similar personal obsessions with royals, celebrities, politicians etc. He’s def FAR from being the only stalker journalist in the media business.

Wow.. This comment aged well. Lol! Piers Morgan is definitely obsessed! Lost his job due to his obsession and like a fool - has only doubled down even more!

Christi Roy He has nothing else to lose & a rich, successful wife to live off of. And also in Piers’ mind he can use his wife’s respect & credibility in place of any of his own. NTM, that he now flat out blames Meghan Markle for “calling to demand an apology or have him fired”. Except that’s not what happened at all. He lost his job due to storming off on Live Television bc his cohost called him out on his out of control & dangerous behavior. She apparently also reminded him that he never “liked” Kate until his obsession with Meghan turned dark. Which basically happened when he said he’d be invited to their wedding..but of course, he wasn’t. He wasn’t called out or embarrassed about not receiving an invite. I think he just couldn’t handle it. Meghan also had deactivated her social media accounts [as she was told km Milo

We ask governments in all countries to unite the bridge pillars as high as one or two meters so that if a car hits a bridge support, it can still slide not as badly as a car crashes into a bridge pillar so that an accident hitting a pillar like what happened to Princess Diana does not happen again, sorry and thank you

I'm an American. I have always been interested in the Royal Family and I personally find it both fascinating and at times controversial. I'll be the first to admit that I don't understand much of what goes on behind "Palace Doors". The ONLY ones that I truly feel bad for are Prince William and Prince Harry. I also feel that the paparazzi played a VERY large part in Princess Diana's death. That being said I think she manipulated the paparazzi to her advantage at times when it suited her purposes. But can we just let her rest in peace instead of rehashing her death and what led up to it...enough is enough. RIP PEOPLE'S PRINCESS 💔🌹💔

Is it normal to fly flag at half staff, for a citizen? I loved Diana myself, but she wasn't a member of the royals anymore. Right?

Her son is a HRH. THOSE in charge new better to disgrace her. When he becomes king he will restore her title.

Not any citizen...once a member of the royal family and mother to a future King. It was also what the public wanted...She may get back her HRH once William becomes King... who knows!

I think it's only traditionally flown at half mast for a King or Queen. And it's only flown wherever the monarch is currently in residence, and they were in Scotland at the time. That's why the Queen couldn't understand the public backlash when they were following protocol.

Kristen: Prince Charles the confused prince. He had originally 3 potential brides or wives to be. there was Camilla, Ms. Flowers, then Diana came along. Charles did become jealous of Diana for the fact she did outshine him. Yes Charles and Diana's marriage was a very sticky situation from the start. But that is all water under the bridge now. Charles has always been a devoted royal and he has proved himself a dedicated father as well. I do believe he was in love with Diana. Even if he never liked admitting to it. In my opinion he was very confused as a young royal batchelor.
