Hello! Welcome to my RU-vid channel!
In this video, I will be reviewing the rejection letters from medical schools that I have received so far during the 20-21 application cycle (The schools and time of application submission and rejection included!) I am also sharing my reactions and reflections on the received rejections.
There has been a 18% increase in medical school applicant numbers nationally this year. And media outlets have attributed this to the “Fauci Effect.” What do you think about the “Fauci effect” and the reasons for the increase in applicants?

it only takes one acceptance ! do not give up, whether you get accepted now or in another cycle you will become a physician. rejection is redirection :))

Thank you for making this video. It did provide valuable info on the current medical school timeline and the surge in the number of applicants. So far Ive been rejected from every US med school Ive applied to. Im waiting to hear back from a few. I got accepted to one caribbean school. It has been really tough. Im looking at another application cycle. Stay strong!

It's getting more competitive each year and the number of applicants keeps rising, but I would attribute it more to economic instability magnified by the coronavirus than I would a Fauci effect. Also in general it is more difficult now to get an entry level job for a college grad. I remember when I graduated in 2006, research assistant/associate jobs at hospital labs required just a bachelors and now they're asking for ppl with masters degrees. And an ever growing trend is more nontrads deciding to pull the trigger and apply to medicine because they feel like that has always been their dream.

I agree with you about the Fauci effect. In high school, one of my teachers asked students to say what they were going to major in in uni. Most of us said pre-med. This was in 2018, obviously before covid. Perhaps, many gen z are just interested in medicine.

Do you feel like pre-interview letters of interest made a difference?

Honestly do not know if the ones I wrote made a difference because all the interviews I got were from schools I did not send pre-interview letters to. But it might be different for other people and schools.

I assume you are in California. There a couple of states where it's way easier and your stats will count for more. LA, WV, MS come to mind as having MD schools for instate with 503 MCAT averages. I ended up going DO with a 519 because I didn't want to wait a year to get clinical experience more than about 59 hours shadowing I was able to get before applying. You could get a job scribing if your life circumstances allow and establish residencies in a state like that. I think MS and LA don't have minimums for how long you need to live there for being a resident for admission. You'd need to check that. Another advantage is all those states have really cheap tuitions. I wish I had done that when I started doing my post bac.

you should make a video! i would love to hear about the stats you know for example MS and LA . And why did you choose DO with a 519? curious about that . the DOs school in my state do not interview high MCAT.

When people refer to "the Fauci Effect," what I don't understand is where the assumption is coming from that all those "extra/additional" applicants are so highly qualified that they cause rejection of other highly qualified applicants. So, does that mean those extra people who otherwise wouldn't have applied due to COVID-19 or Fauci were so highly competent and competitive but wasn't applying until now? Sheer increase in number doesn't mean there are huge increase in competitive applicants. While it may decrease the acceptance percentage, it is a meaningless number unless there are huge increase in the applicants in the competitive range which I doubt that is the case (small increase possibly but not significant enough).

It’s so weird cause many people before covid dedicated themselves to medicine and now people see doctors during covid and want to be doctors? Medical schools will definitely have high drop out rates if people like this go to medical school

The admissions committees probably thought you were too pretty and would make all their other students look bad. That’s my hypothesis. Better luck next cycle.

I think the “fauci effect” is also due to people with lower stats thinking the circumstances surrounding the pandemic would make it easier for them to get in. I have low GPA, but I’m doing a postbacc rather than applying.
