The amount of knowledge Adam has with his open minded on taking a pragmatic approach to his kung fu is absolutely amazing! Taking quality attributes from traditional arts and even truly comprehending how chi gung ties into relaxing were huge gaps I didn't know I was missing until I included into all my training!

Adam do you have any advice being able to tell when someone is going to punch or kick? I practice Taekwondo and quite a few people are good at not telegraphing certain kicks wether it is a roundhouse kick or fast kick with the front leg. My point is I often can't avoid them getting a headshot on me, sometimes I can but not consistently. Any advice would be appreciated, Thank you Adam.

Don't react to the kick or punch; react to movement. Breathe; relax. Chi Sao will go a long way in teaching you this.
@screamtheguy6425
@screamtheguy6425 4 года назад
You will never react on time, as Adam said Action is faster than reaction. You can try pre-emptive striking to gain contact and then you can do something because you will have tactile sensitivity in contact. But that's just my suggestion as a Wing Chun guy with average reaction time, Chi Sao has taught me sensitivity and will back me up during contact with an opponent.

Is it truly possible to relax, even in a life or death situation?
@ciaosign3
@ciaosign3 6 лет назад
yes, but it will take a lot of practice. That's why many people believe it's bs, because they dont have deeper understanding.

Oh yeah, it’s very possible. Once a drunk friend of mine pissed off a bunch of people that wanted to kill him and me. I was so sure I was a dead man that I just relaxed and decided to to go down fighting. Wasn’t the least bit scared. It was like a relief, I was so relaxed. Anyways, some old lady came up snd talked the thugs from killing us and they let us go. Man, I chewed my friend out the next day and never went drinking with that moron ever again. Why do we men always choose morons for friend? Geez.

Relaxed hitting is using the weight of the arm for example to do the damage to the opponent. 5.7kg is the average weight of an average male. Using muscles to punch results in the punch being pulled back by certain muscles. Using the Earth, foot, etc up to the striking part increases the damage to an opponent. My son who was 4kgs was walking towards me then fell hitting near my eye with his arm. For several days I couldnt see from that eye. No brusing etc. His whole bodyweight hit my head. He also has Prader-Willi Syndrome.

You will see the 'bad pad holder' concept all the time in real fights, because of what I term 'spastic movement' generated by real confrontations. 'Fight or flight' impulses combined with the distraction of people shouting/screaming (or worse, throwing chairs..) means that people rarely move the way they do in training or even in controlled fights. No referee and the fact that you aren't facing another fighter in a so-called fair fight prompts some bizarre body mechanics in many people, and its rare to see strikes land 'right on the pad' in the initial flurry. We can all laugh at the 'thrashing windmill' approach but its different when that windmill is on top of you in the blink of an eye and it only gets worse from there. One thing I have never seen in a gym/dojo/kwoon is fighters being pushed and pulled while trying to fight their opponent - even in trying to train to defend against multiple assailants (and good luck with that, btw). You will occasionally see the 'he pulls my arm and I throw him into another attacker' in Aikido demos but those guys cop so much stick that I wont even go there. I'm a broken record on this, but I still think there is a point in any training where serious martial artists need to pad up (incl mouthguard and box), put yourself against a wall and have a 110kg Rugby player monster you - no technique, just brute force trying to put you through that wall. And be prepared to run. Thanks for the video.
