Relax to the sights of the Shetland Islands.
Shetland has a wild landscape and a coast forged by the waves of the North Atlantic. With magnificent archaeological sites, rich culture, festivals, and fascinating wildlife, Scotland’s Northern Isles are the perfect destination for you to explore.
With regular sailings from Aberdeen, travelling to Shetland is more convenient than ever before.

We are NOT the so-called "Northern Isles" and certainly not "Scotland's Northern Isles". :(

Why not? What's the problem?

@@seb-depp If you knew our oppressive history under Scotland you would understand. Perhaps we could start with the Lairds?. The Scottish Lairds were an obnoxious group of landowners from Scotland who "moved in" when the "King's lands of Shetland" were pawned to the King Of Scotland in 1469 when King James of Scotland married Princess Margaret of Denmark. Shetland was part of Norway back then which came under the Kingdom of Denmark. The agreement was meant to be temporary but the Scottish Lairds saw an opportunity to move in grabbing what land they could. This left most Shetlanders as mere tenants and one of the things they had to do was fish for the lairds in small 8 man, open boats up to 40 miles from land. On a number of occasions a storm blew up out of nowhere and both the boats and men were lost. Because the Lairds owned the boats, the widows of the drowned men had to pay back the value of the boat and if they couldn't then they had to pay back the value by manual work. There's a road on the island of Yell(in Shetland) called "the widows road". It was dug and constructed by the widows of men who were lost in one of the storms fishing for the Laird. The same arrogant and oppressive attitude is being shown towards Shetland today from the SNP Government in Edinburgh and because of all this and more, I refuse to see Shetland subsumed into Scotland in any way. We are not the "Northern Isles" in any way, shape or form and never will be.

@@Trollberg60north I get that. Was the rule under Norway better?

@@seb-depp Yes, every man/woman owned their own land under Udal Law and the "Crown" couldn't touch it. The King of Denmark made at least seven attempts to redeem the pledge/lands by sending ambassadors to Scotland but the Scottish King had realised he'd gotten hold of a good thing and so each time a delegation came he just prevaricated until the group ran out of time and money and had to return to Denmark. The Scottish Courts have been challenged to prove that Shetland is part of Scotland(there's no legal document in existence that makes Shetland a part of Scotland) but each time the Sheriff just shuffled uncomfortably in the chair and deferred it.

@@Trollberg60north I had just read that the Danish failed to repay their debt so Shetland became Scottish. So I guess there's more to it. Thanks for the info.
