The Maldives are located in the southwest of Sri Lanka, on the equator. Numerous coral reef islands, 1190 in total, form an archipelago of 26 natural atolls (groups of neighboring coral islands). These 26 atolls are divided into 19 administrative divisions with the island's capital, Male, comprising 20 administrative divisions. Seen from the air, the atolls and islands form beautiful scenes against the blue depths of the Indian Ocean.
The Maldives is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination. Brilliantly clear, transparent sea water, the purest nature of the Maldives leaves no one indifferent. Holidays in the Maldives can be compared to immersing yourself in a completely different world, a world of innocent nature and marine life.
The Maldives extend over 823 km from north to south and 130 km from east to west. Of the incredibly large number of islands, only 200 are inhabited, and about 100 islands are tourist resorts. The sea makes up more than 99% of the Maldives. Only 0.331% (298 km²) is land.
Most of the Maldives can be crossed in ten minutes; Only a few are more than two kilometers long. The longest, Hithadhoo, at the southernmost atoll, is eight kilometers long (5-6 miles). While most other islands are less than a mile in length, no one feels limited in space as the fusion of beaches, crystal clear waters and crisp blue skies create endless vastness, a rare natural openness and a long-awaited tranquility.
