Hello everyone!
As always world got even worse in the past couple weeks and it feels weird to post a video on RU-vid. I don’t want to get into any other topic going on in the world right now. As usual I just hope you and your families are safe and living in peace.
This video was shot during summer around Eastern Sierra and Yosemite. I am not sure if it will be reflecting 100% but I feel like this video and the upcoming one will be the true representation of my film making style. Going out is always an adventure and creating a film gets me excited each time! I do not believe in formulas. I go outside and wait for the moment I feel inspired.
On one of the hikes I slipped and I fell down. Thankfully I wasn’t hurt but I hit my camera to a rock face. Polarizer saved the lens but It got bent, got stuck and broken into pieces. I had no spare lens with me on the hike so the only option was to keep shooting with it until I got back to my car to change the lens. I was really angry with myself. I couldn’t believe I slipped on one of the easiest sections. I got really scared because the last stretch was very difficult with a lot of loose rocks and some snow. It was a good reminder to change my shoes for the upcoming hikes. Sneakers are not the best shoes for hiking.
High altitude, a broken/stuck lens filter was not a good combo. I wasn’t even sure if the lens AF was still working. I had crazy flares on the screen and viewfinder. I was in between going back and enjoying the moment. I chose enjoying the moment. Tried to shoot some scenes with what I could see on the screen. I used manual focus most of the time. And until I checked the footage on my laptop 3 days later, I had no idea if there was anything worth sharing. Well… I got back and I was amazed by what I saw. Each scene was so unique and beautiful with all those crazy light leaks, flares. I got more emotional. I felt like it was a representation of how I felt, how everything in my life was going, etc. Some unexpected accidents can create the most magical moments. You learn from those mistakes and move on. Isn’t life all about adapting to changes and doing the best you can whatever the circumstance is?
Anyways I went back to using magnetic filters after this incident since it took me a full day to remove the filter from the lens. With magnetic filters I will be able to just use the lens without a filter if anything goes wrong. I used the Freewell magnetic filters for the rest of the trip. No issues after that. They have a new system. I am gonna be adding the link.
I am still using a Canon R6 and still finding the image quality stellar. I spent the last year focusing on my health and fitness. The goal was to hike some of my favorite trails and complete some hikes I wasn’t able to find time doing before. Hiking up to Big Pine Lakes in the morning and hiking 4 Mile trail in the afternoon is kind of crazy but hey I did it. I also shot a Milky-way time-lapse after that and drove back to San Francisco to work at 7 AM next morning. It felt incredibly good. I can honestly say that upgrading my cardio level is and always will be more important that upgrading my camera gear. I didn’t even use an external mic. Everything you hear is coming from the on camera mic.
Hope you enjoy the video. Let me know in comments what you think about the crazy flares from 7:12 to 8:48!
