RELAXING VISUAL STIMS | What's That?!

Stimming can be a useful tool! Do you visually stim too? If so, what are YOUR visual stims?
PHOTOSENSITIVE & SENSORY WARNING: glimmering lights
Everyone stims differently, uniquely and sometimes discreetly. But for autistic people, such as myself, stimming can be a vital part of our daily lives.
It's frustrating that my stimming is often misinterpreted for daydreaming, boredom or me being "just plain rude!"
But I can promise, however, that I actually can listen without giving you my eyes - in fact, I process what you are saying much more clearly when I look away and stim as you are talking. Often my mind imagines what you are saying in the form of pictures/video.
Listening is with the ears and mind afterall...not the eyes.
This video was Sponsored by Guyatt House Care who financed the production of this video. They have hired me to meet and deliver training next month in our first booking event and are proud "Embracers of the Stim". #sponsorship #sponsor #sponsoredvideo #promotion
Polar Moon very kindly sent us a free "Roly Moly" as a Stim Gift. I plan to do a review in the next month #freebie #review

Since I was really little, I could lay awake in bed for hours after waking up, either talking to myself, singing and humming, or staring at the wallpaper designs or the patterns the light made coming through the curtains. I also loved staring at the patterns on my bedsheets. Making shadow puppets with my hands was another thing I always loved. As an adult, one of my favourite stims now is watching my pet birds!

I also love visual stims. Probably why I am an artist. I love LED color lights, glitter, iridescent everything, holographic stickers, color changing and sparkly putty, gems etc etc etc.

I'm an artist but I've only recently discovered mixed media - and oh boy, it's the perfect mixture of textural and visual stimming. Finger painting! Texture paste! Bright colors and shiny varnish!!! When I was a child, I was always stimming, but since this was in the late 70s to early 90s, nobody thought of autism and adults tried to stop me all the time because it was "rude". When I did my apprenticeship, I was told I needed to stop fidgeting and playing with my fingers when customers could see me. And I could never stop, not for long, because it made me feel like I needed to jump out of my skin...

I just found the phrase "visual stimming" and I tried googling it. Most stuff was about what's wrong with it and how to stop kids from doing it. So frustrating!! Your video shows how visual stimming is admiring and enjoying the beautiful things in the world that everyone else misses seeing!

okay. lets see if my english is good enough to explain what i want to explain. my favorite visual stim is with my camera with a macrolens on it. i get really close to the object and then zoom in and out. it is so satisfying! especially when its a bouquet of flowers! good video by the way!

I stim in social situations by doodling or drawing, and it really helps me to cope in the situation, if I have the energy that is. It has sometimes helped in social situations because people notice and ask me about what I'm drawing and to see more, which gets me to talk about something I am interested in, this helps because sometimes I have selective mutism in these situations, which is horrible. But another stim is one that freaks people out, which is fire, I love to stare at fire and see it work. I don't consider myself a pyromaniac, (I've been called that often, don't like it) I don't want to set things on fire, I just like to watch the flames flicker and change and glow. =) They're so pretty! Especially candles and fireplaces. Also it's such a warm and living light. Cozy..

Yes! I love fire in the same way! I really like those little packets of elements you can get where you put it in fire and it changes the colour. Like, copper turns fire greens and blues and you can see the streaks of colour through the orange and seeing how the colour changes as the element burns off is one of my favourite things to watch.

Did you get into trouble in school for drawing? I doodled so much I had to stop because I was being punished for it, for "not paying attention" even though I could hear: the clock, my teacher, a kid farting, pencil tapping, chair squeaking, birds beyond the door, the lights buzzing, etc. I stopped drawing for a long time because it brought on negative feelings. I started again, more recently!
@maddie9602
@maddie9602 5 лет назад
I've never been much of a doodler, but one stim I really enjoy is just the physical act of writing. Of course, it was a really useful stim in school -- furiously taking notes tends not to draw the same kind of negative attention as tapping my pen on the table or drawing or fiddling with a piece of string -- and it has the added bonus of being a convenient excuse to not try to make eye contact. Even if I don't have pen and paper on me, I'll sometimes write with my finger on a desk or my leg. When there isn't anything meaningful for me to write down, I'll write lyrics to my favorite songs, excerpts from my favorite poems or from speeches or what have you -- I have entire notebooks full of the lyrics to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", the opening lines to the US Declaration of Independence, Hamlet's soliloquy, and other random snippets. I agree with fire, back when I was in the Scouts, I could spend hours staring at a campfire, watching it die down long after everyone else had gone to bed. Candles are great too -- I love watching the Shabbat candles flicker on Friday evenings, and the menorah on Hanukkah.

@@mezlandia I didn't doddle at school (I found a love for it later 😊) but I did used to bring in my own books and read them in class, I'd listen too! But I relent my teacher actually through it across the room once, I gave her the evil eye, waited a few minutes then went, picked it up and continued reading it... Didn't bat an eye. I was going through a period were I locked all emotions down, which is why I didn't cry. 😅 Now I'm a blubbering mess 😅

I really love these videos you make. I was diagnosed with autism about a year ago so I'm still learning about what that really means and I didn't know that visual stims existed before so this video is really helpful to me because now I can realise how some of the things I do are visual stims and now I can embrace them. :D

I love anything that moves. I like marble runs, moving water.. As a kid I would sit in front of the washing machine for hours. I mostly like visual stims that require very little action from me. My favourite visual stim is to watch the rain on the window.
@maddie9602
@maddie9602 5 лет назад
I love watching rain to, but I love listening to it even more. When it's feasible, I love to open a window and watch it and listen to it patter, or go outside and sit on a covered porch (much as I love rain, I am not fond of getting sopping wet).

Have you heard of the stone labradorite? It's a really pretty crystal that, if the light hits it right, will have really pretty colors, it's really stimmy.

Peacock ore is another good one… it’s iridescent if you get a good specimen. And the TV rock is an absolute gem (haha) for stimming because you can run it over words or pictures and it brings the color to the surface of the rock.

I stim a lot. It helps me to concentrate. I also stim at home, at shopping center, when I go out, during school trip, in the cinema and literally everywhere. I have a lot of toys. Plushies (normally these are for babies but they have different textures, so I think it is fine), bottles filled with water and glitter, tangles, balls, squishies, little container filled with hand sanitizer (I threw there some beads, so it's more satisfying because beads don't go down, they stay in place) and set of colorful markers (from IKEA) and coloring book/notebook. Last two things help me during long trips, so I can calm down. Without these things I just feel really tired, my head hurts and I am more sensitive (Yes, it's sensory overload. That's how I feel it). Because I can't stand most of the sounds, I wear headphones and I listen to music. Music is just a background to the sounds around me. I still hear them but I don't have to hide somewhere or cover my ears (that's how I react to loud sounds or sounds I don't like). My my mom and my teachers noticed how many new things I do. For example now I can write or draw using mechanical pencil but earlier I couldn't do that. I am sorry if I made any mistake but I still learn. English is not my native language.

Ohhh I just remembered something my mom used to tease me for! Whenever we’d go places like on the bus or at the store or wherever I’d have a hard time keeping my hands to myself. Like if I saw someone with a really nice scarf I just had to touch it. I have this visual memory right now of some lady having a furry coat and it was so fascinating, like you know how fur kinda floats when it moves? And I did my best to not reach for it (failed). She also teases me about the time I tried to play soccer. I had no idea where the ball was because I was so caught up in looking at the other players shoes. In the nineties there were a lot of fun shoes around, let me tell you! Sorry for long and incoherent comment but I just got so giddy now for some reason, I want to bring out my juiciest brush pen and just watch the ink flow.

Mmmm fur. Rediscovering this stim after 50yrs having found out I'm autistic last yr & that it's OK to actually do this. I was stopped & told it was 'wrong' around age 5/6. What I think they meant by wrong was I was doing it way too intently, obviously & was seen to be enjoying it 'too' much ie. in a creepy way. Well sod that...

As a kid I used to go to my grandma's house and find the little toy that had water and colored oil(looks like a mini lava lamp) and flip it upside down for hours and hours. I also used to trace my eyes along the patterns that the paint made in the walls, finding crazy images in it that others couldn't see. As an adult it's interesting, I'm from boring old North Florida but I moved to New York City this year. Most people from my area would say NYC is stressful and overstimulating, but I found I was actually MORE relaxed living there, seeing sparkly skyscrapers, graffiti art on every building, constant movement by people riding bicycles, cars, and trains. I moved back home last month and I must say, I need my visual stems back!

I always loved losing myself in the microcosoms of dust sparkling in a ray of light, light pouring through clear colored glass of various shapes and sizes, often with tiny bubbles frozen inside looking like tiny galaxies. I also collected an endless array of shiny things, and glitter is life :D Its funny because light is such a huge part of my visual stimming, but im hyper light sensitive when it comes to the sun. I cant ever let it touch my skin. Im starting to wonder how im going to cope as I age. I need to be hyper close up looking at various angles to truly lose myself and relax, but they say we become farsighted in age. So far im super near sighted so its ok. Fingers crossed lol

I know i love watching aquariums (if the fish and other creatures are healthy). I have one with neon tetras (red and flashy blue) and corydoras (mini catfish) that like to play with their reflections on the glass. Also have stripy yellow and black assassin snails. Its relaxing to watch them. I also have a home on Elder Scrolls Online in Coldharbour and its one of my visual stims. Its blue colours and spooky which i like, and its an open area that i have a music box playing and horses and other creatures moving around.

Thank you for this...I stim occasionally as it is extremely helpful for my anxiety and depression. I am currently discontinuing an antidepressant because I have to get tested for narcolepsy. About five minutes ago I was on the verge of a total breakdown because as a result of the discontinuation I am beginning to have hallucinations and have been experiencing “brain zaps” for days.
