Hello Friends! In this video, I review how to release the masseter muscle. This is a BIG (the biggest!), important, and regularly-used muscle of mastication. The masseter can easily be OVER-used with chronic clenching and grinding activity. When it is overused and when it becomes dysfunctional, it can lead to jaw pain and headaches! If you can release the masseter successfully, you can help to release tension and fibrotic areas that have built up within this muscle which will, in turn, help to relieve symptoms of jaw pain and/or headaches. Please watch and enjoy!

This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! I will also be posting about being a dentist and a working mommy to two wonderful children. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos!

I have had pain for YEARS. I have constant nearly unbearable pain on the right side of my head, neck, eye, and sinus area. I have had two sinus surgeries, eye procedures and drops/medications, headache specialists and medications, steroid injections, ER visits for intense head and eye pain, time away from work, and different specialists of all sorts. I have been doing this and a few other massages of yours (the temporalis video helped a TON!) and a couple others from doctors I found here. It's not completely gone yet but I have less pain than I have had in forever! If this will help long term - it will truly be a life changing discovery - THANK YOU!!!!

I have had TMJ issues for over a decade and was diagnosed with hEDS a few years ago. Hi Doctor Mistry, I just want to thank you so much for this video! I'm a college student and we were on finals last week. I suffer from anxiety, and these week was really tough for me. I was stressing a lot, clenching my teeth even while awake. My masseter muscle was very sore and the pain was very distracting. Over the weekend I just did outside massage, and it kind of worked, but didn't feel that release. But I found this video and did the inside massage, and God, I was finally able to feel the release. I have really painful masseter muscles and pterygoid muscles. I have a custom made orthotics, but it is not resolving my issues, How many times can I release these masseter muscles a day and can I do both versions, outside and inside the mouth at the same time. I know you mentioned that the pterygoid muscle can only be done once or twice a day. I have suffered daily with TMD and can't seem to find the best solution or doctor. I was offered Botox for the muscles but if things don't settle down, I am wasting more money and energy. Wondering if you know of anyone on the same page as you in Massachusetts.

Great video explaining the SCM exercises. I have had extreme pain in my SCM for about 1 1/2 years now. Its getting better very slowly, but still very painful and tight feeling on both sides. The right side is worst than my left side. I was wondering if doctors do cortisone injections into the SCM to reduce the inflammation, pain and tightness? I need some kind of relieve soon. Plus, I take Tylenol and Advil all the time to deal with the pain and inflammation. Thank you!

I wish there was. Botox should help atrophy those muscles if done every 3 months for about a year. But this is expensive and Botox is a neurotoxin. Botox in the masseters can also potentiate sleep apnea.

Thank you for this video as well as your response to my comment from another video. When I perform the first release, I feel a painful lump inside my right cheek. I feel the lump in the same location as well, between my thumb and index finger, when I perform the second release. The lump is hard but can be moved around. Is this lump a muscle knot? My hunch is it's contributing to my TMD and facial misalignment. Edit: the lump I'm feeling is a vertical lump, if that makes sense. Thank you in advance!

It may be a muscle knot but it would be wise to get an MRI to further evaluate a painful lump because it may be something more than a muscle knot.

Hi Dr. Mistry! I’m a dentist too in Boston. Nice job on Dr. Lin’s interview! I’m curious about all the interest in sleep medicine in last year in dentistry. Is it warranted? I’m sure we will find more connections between dental and medical fields, hopefully have more common ground. You mentioned that in children an expansion of the upper arch can help bring the lower jaw to a more ideal position, and hopefully stabilize the airway and TMJ. Does that also help the phenotype to express itself fully in terms of growing the lower jaw to a more proportional and ideal bone structure? Can this be used in adults as well with removable palatal expanders without TMJ dysfunction? Lately, there is more focus on improving jaw growth to help the airway especially in children so that in adulthood they can thrive, especially avoiding soft diet, nursing, correcting tongue tie... Thank you!
@theTMJdoc
@theTMJdoc 3 года назад
Hi there Dr. Keon! Yes I believe the interest in sleep medicine is definitely warranted as there is a string connection between sleep apnea and TMJ disorders. Expansion can definitely help children reach their full genetic potential in terms of orofacial growth :). As for adults, expansion can be achieved too, but often not as easily or as quickly as with children and I haven’t seen it cause TMJ dysfunction.

I’ll be releasing a video about Botox and TMJD in a few weeks. I think it’s a temporary bandaid that can be helpful in the short term. Tinnitus is the one symptom that, in my experience, does not respond predictably to any treatment.

@@theTMJdoc you’re right about Botox being a temporary bandaid. I was in a Botox for migraines study at USC Medical Center some years ago. The injections would help for a couple days but the migraines kept coming back. I only figured out after discovering your channel yesterday that my problem is TMJ. Specifically I think the lateral pterygoid and masseter are angry. I have had a terrible shooting pain around my lower left wisdom tooth area since 2017.
