@Alfred Wedmore inefficient? they were inefficient because they were 2 strokes, and allowed part of their air-gas-oil mixture out of the exhaust un-burnt. They warmed up quickly because they were tiny engine with an aluminum head and an engine whose cylinders that fired on every revolution under load. They had a huge heater core that was also the same one used in the Volvo Amazon, and it would actually cool the engine down at low speeds in cold weather, It's why they came with an exhaust stove air intake snorkel with a winter selector lever and a radiator blind you could adjust from the interior. ( I have direct experience with this as I've owned two; a '62, 96 and a '65, 95 estate.)

Totally agree with you regarding young folks with old cars. I don't even mind when I see kids "blinging" their cars with Halfords tat because at least it means they've got some interest in working on cars and, out of every ten who slap on fake bonnet vents and caliper covers, there'll be a couple who decide to fit an induction kit and one who decides to take his engine to bits (probably breaking it in the process) and ends up getting properly into car repair.

I blinged my 1971 Cortina Mk3 back in 1977 with Halfords tat of the era. Centre console with fake black leather vinyl storage compartment which you then cut a hole for your state of the art mono radio with tape player. Enhanced with a 8 foot glass fibre whippy aerial, Cortina decals for the wings, cheap rear parcel shelf speakers, a fluffy dice or two, some lovely seat covers and not forgetting the heated rear window stick on element. You could also get the power window winder boxes and for the engine a lovely chrome pancake air filter box and soak the filter in oil which replaced the huge standard filter, also made your car sound more powerful than it was.

Im a young folk, saving for a classic mini (not easy at 17 years old). When I get it im going to be doing it up best i can. No bling, but i do want to put a john cooper engine upgrade in myself and make it lovely and stock (with a john cooper conversion)

@@greatbritannialine Good on ya' and best of luck with the Mini. Be prepared to deal with a lot of rust, though. Can be soul-destroying when you're doing your best to service and rebuild all the mechanical parts and the bodyshell is just turning into rust in front of you. Main reason I ended up being a Land Rover fan is that Defenders and (to some extent) Disco's have a lot of alu' body panels and repairing the chassis is do-able.

It's great to see my dad's Ital camper at the end of the video! To clarify though, it's not actually a Sun Tor, it's a Brownhills conversion. One of only 6 made and quite possibly the only one left. Edit: It's a Brownhills conversion. I misheard it as Brownell's.

Great video as always, Ian. I'm just to where you find the row of American cars. I will try to give you details. Lime Green Mustang is a 72 Mach 1 Sport Back, and most likely has a 351 V8 (5.8 litre) "Cleveland" engine. Cleveland, Ohio is where the foundry and factory where the engine was built are located. That colour was, I believe called "Grabber Green" and was an extra cost high impact paint. Next to it is a 1973 Ford Gran Torino wagon. Not a Squire, as no wood grain. The engine from the factory could have been anything from a 302 (5 Litre) Windsor V8 through the 351 Cleveland, to the 385 block displacing as much as 460 cid in a mid-sized wagon. This one would haul anything as quickly as you wanted. The white with stripes is a 1970 Mustang GT 2+2 with non-standard stripes. The scoop in the hood indicates it may have a 385 block V8 displacing 429 cid in Cobra Jet form. Yes, that white one is a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Looks to be a fairly late generation 3 car, so early 90s is my guess. The red Falcon convertible is a 65/66 and looks to have the Sprint option package. A Mustang in everything but name, it is mechanically identical to the same year Mustang with different body panels. Next to the Thunderbird is a 64 Chevrolet Impala SS. Under the bonnet could be anything from a 250cid inline 6 to a 409cid V8. In between there was a pair of 283cid V8s and a pair of 327 V8s. Transmissions could 3 speed column shift, 4 speed floor shift, and 2 speed Powerglide automatic. The Powerglide was available with all engines. I believe the 3 speed manual was standard across the board, with the 4 speed available in some body styles and with certain engines. The green Volvo Estate appears to be a 72 145S. 1 Series platform, 4 cylinder engine, 5 door (wagon) body. The S mean a 1.8 litre engine with dual side draught carburetors. Depending on the market and local regs, carbs could be Zenith or Stromberg. I have to say I would about kill to get to a show like that one.

Glad you touched on the Jowett Ian, I live 5 miles from the factory site now a Morrisons supermarket. As a nod to Jowett they have enlarged photos of the factory interior and assembly lines dotted around the store. If I'm correct, the Jupiter was entirely built in house but the other models bodies built at Briggs in Doncaster ,who as you rightly say bought by Ford and destroyed the press dies.
@caw25sha
@caw25sha 2 года назад
I think I mentioned this before on one of Ian's videos, but in about 1985 I was working for my dad and we had to go to the old Jowett factory which was being used as a depot for, I believe, an American bulldozer company. We had to give an opinion for an insurer on one of their bulldozers which had been damaged in transit.
@davidjones332
@davidjones332 2 года назад
Briggs also built the Standard 10 body. It was Ford's takeover that led Standard Triumph to recruit lots of small press shops to make panels for the new Herald, and thus the decision to use a separate chassis which acted as an assembly jig. Ironically that secured the Herald's place as probably the easiest car ever to restore as it's nearly all bolted together.

Pink Holden Torana GTR XU1 at 1:46. Colour was called Strike Me Pink as was the jokey colour names around this era for US and Australian performance cars in this era. The price was a bargain, go for much higher prices in Australia. Six cylinder triple carb 3.3 litre with 185hp off the showroom floor in a car developed from the HB Vauxhall Viva. Won the Bathurst 500 mile race in 1972 with Peter Brock driving against 5.7 litre V8 Falcons. The GTS Commodore seems a bargain too

Velorex are still in business, though better known as a sidecar manufacturer. I have a 1990 Velorex 710 sidecar sat in my back garden. Production of the "Oskar"3 wheeler cyclecar ended in 1971. Spares support is better than excellent, due to the comprehensive use of the globally popular Jawa & CZ motorcycle running gear & powerplants. Brand new crankshafts, piston, CDI / alternator upgrades, etc. are readily available for all Jawa motorcycles, purveyed by a host of 3rd party manufacturers. EBC even make ceramic brake shoe for Jawa & CZ motorcycles. All Jawa & CZ engines are the easiest to rebuild, being very novice friendly. Everything is, "Ah, I understand how this works", helpful.

You were doing OK Ian, until you came to the Marina stand. I had the misfortune to drive an X reg 1.7L Ital estate, in the same cream colour as the saloon featured on the stand. Fortunately the one I drove was a company car, I wasn't paying for it. I was a water treatment engineer and had the vehicle for just over 2 years, November 1982 to February 1985, during that time the vehicle covered around 55,000 miles, travelling all over the country. I left the company due to a dispute over them cutting my wages, but during my period of notice, the crown wheel on the back axle suddenly gave up the ghost and was taken in for repair. The last time I drove it was to my solicitor's office in Bury, where, due to a financial dispute, my former employers had paid funds into the solicitor's account, in order to get their vehicle back, as they were terrible at paying monies owed. Two months later, I got a phone call from the garage demanding payment for the repairs, by then I'd left the company , so it wasn't my problem. I was without a company car for the next two years, so I went back to driving my trusty old R Reg Mk IV 1.6L Cortina. Although made in 1976, it was a far better car than my 1982 X reg Ital Estate, in virtually every respect. It merely illustrated that by the early 1980s, with the Ital, Allegro and Maxi still in production, how far British Leyland had fallen behind the competition, especially Ford.

Note @2:57 the SAAB 96..Their 2 strokers were SAAB's own in house engine design, that car, based on the turn signals is a 1965. Their engines are based loosely on the old DKW engines, but they are better engineered. Slanted over at 60 degrees to the left, with an integral water pump/housing built into the engine head and a Bosch distributor with vacuum and flyweight advance, they are better than the DKW in how the SAAB engines drive, which the DKW had fixed ignition timing.

26:28 When I was a kid there was a Toyota dealer in the main road round the corner from us. I was walking past one day with my mum and they had one of those camper vans at the front of the showroom. My mum popped in and asked how much it was and the salesman told her it was £4000 which she thought was too expensive. This was probably about 76/77. Strange how insignificant little snippets like that can stay with you for nearly half a century. I even remember that it was white.

The middle digit on the Volvo designation of the time represents number of cylinders, hence 144 and 164 withn4 and 6 cylinders respectively.

And of course the last digit is the number of doors. 4: saloon, 5: estate. (I think there was also a 2 in some countries.)

British Guiana/Guyana and Suriname (formerly Dutch) are the only countries in the mainland American continent where they drive on the left.

That Gilbern Invader is a dead ringer for a Jensen Interceptor, or should that be the other way round?

Interesting Panda fact - on the Mk1 the slatted grille was on different sides depending whether it had the 2 cyl air cooled motor or the 903 CC water cooled 4

Big bore 2CV kit mirrors the 652 that already existed for the Visa and LNA. I think it is just coincidence.

You were a tad disparaging about the " fake plastic 2 cv " , but hey it would prevent the typical 2cv rampaging rust issues would it not ? Nice to see , the early and later Husky's , i would love to own either .

Some of the plastic vans are very good replicas of the original, but some are a bit off the mark.

@@HubNut I had the same thought when you said that Ian, and made me doubly regretful of deciding to go that route with mine. As I'm sure I mentioned on the Organ collection caper, the fibreglass van kit I got from Villevans is terrible quality, so I see your point, but seemed like the best option at the time. When I eventually finish it, we'll see how it turns out ;-)

Isn't it just great that developers were given free reign to make all sorts of weird and wonderful cars, it's sad that everything is quite safe nowadays.
