And Ricardo Montalban would revisit and parody that line in a guest character voiceover in the cartoon Freakazoid: "Revenge is a dish best served...WITH PINTO BEANS AND MUFFINS!!"
The proverb "revenge is a dish best served cold" is not especially old but first appeared in English in the translation of Eugène Sue's novel Memoirs of Matilda in 1846.
A brief moment to think and then realizing that there was an override command sent, but not knowing the Starfleet systems well enough to find it in a panic. Brilliant acting.
Because she was right to. Kirk is the best fictional leader for this reason, admits when he's wrong and always has the safety of his crew as top priority.
Khan's face when his 1st officer reports the shields are down and he can't get them back up...perfect. You see the shock and amazement at first, quickly followed by rage. The fact that anyone, especially Kirk, could outwit him is unconscionable to Khan.
The officer’s over-the-top “I CAN’T!!” is both appropriate for the drama and gravity of the situation and a call back to the overacting camp of the original series. So well done!😁
I work in IT. 90%+ breaches is something stupid like a default PW or weak password or somebody doing something by accident. So I totally believe that a guy like Khan would forget to change a PIN.
@@volters9561that is the recurring theme, the latter “two dimensional thinking” concept. As a person from the 21st century he was not as familiar with space battle concepts having been a terrestrial warlord.
More trivia; Ricardo Montalbaun turned down the salary that was offered. He settled for Guild minimum wanting the production to have extra money to succeed.
I will never forget when I went to see this film with my father and when they were able to lower the USS Reliant’s shields the whole audience stood up and cheered, I had never seen that in a movie theater ever.
They didn't stand up, but when I saw star wars II and Yoda force pulled out his light Saber, that was the closest I ever saw to what you are describing.
Probably the best of the TOS movies. Well acted and paced. Doesn't surrender plot for the sake of action. And thanks to Ricardo Montalban for chewing scenery with the utmost aplomb.
The undiscovered country gave me everything it is my one of my favorite trek movies because I love the wrath of Khan too but yeah those two are my favorite
A little trivia: Ricardo was still doing Fantasy Island at the time. He didnt have a lot of time to shoot his scenes, but still wanted to do the movie. They filmed his scenes in a different studio. That's why Kirk and Khan are never together in the movie.
same Studio different schedule. the budget didn't allow for any additional star fleet star ship bridge sets. the Miranda bridge was built by the crew moving the "pie wedges around in to a new config" it did lead to errors where they left tapes for the Phase II enterprise in the u-matic players. the Oberth - class was also done the same way but given a big center console to make the set feel more cramped.
I always find it fascinating.....we do not see the behinds scenes.....but certain actors so love the character and story......they make time and effort to film it.
He initially said no to doing it at all, believing that it just wasn't a large enough part for him. After thinking about it, however, he realized that the part was larger than screen time. When he wasn't on screen, the film was reacting to him, talking about him, and dealing with him. He was there even when he wasn't, so he took the role.
He's not just gloating, he has an ulterior motive, getting Kirk to give him Genesis in exchange for sparring his crew. He's not doing the cliche of the villain monologuing giving the hero a chance, he's trying to get an extremely powerful weapon while he has the upper hand.
Ricardo wore the role of Khan like a suit of armor. You could tell he was absolutely loyal to his people, but at the same time had an ego that would ultimately be the end of them all. When his First makes the point "we have a starship and are free to go wherever you like. You've already defeated Kirk by freeing us" or words to that effect, he wasn't wrong. But Khan's ego wouldn't stop till either or Kirk were dead. And, even Kirk is, literally a, genius (and has the benefit of Spock's) , to Khan they're inferiors in need of being put in their place.
I wouldnt say he was loyal to his people at all. With Genesis and a starship they could have ruled, or at least set themselves up pretty well in the galaxy. Khan could have replicated it and used it to terrorize everyone into submission. Going head to head with Kirk, a guy who had beaten him back in his best days, then repeated it just off the cuff when Khan had literally JUST surprised him was insane. Khan may be more intelligent but Kirk obviously has his number. Best to leave that in the rear view mirror, as Joachim so states.
To this day one of the most suspenseful scenes ever put on screen in a Sci fi film. The music the acting everything right on point. "Sir, our shields are dropping!" "Raise them!" "I CAN'T!" "Where's the override? The override???"
What a power team that put this movie together. Harve Bennett. Nicholas Meyer, James Horner. All the actors. The SFX crew. Every one of them on their absolute A Game. Plus, at 2:24, look at Khan's crew, and how they flinch in surprise at the full-throated vengeance in Khan's voice as he screams "FIRE!!!!!!" Absolutely brilliant.
Now i'm wondering if Ricardo Montalban was directed to voice that line a little quieter (in a subdued "gotcha" sort of way) but went full ham instead 😄
Ricardo was a heck of an actor and a fine gentleman too. When his outfit showed his chest, that wasn't a body suit he was wearing showing off his muscles...it was him!!
“Here it comes”. Great line and thank God Nicholas Meyer got Shatner to do multiple takes. Bill’s instinct was to say it half shouting like a taunt, but Nick got him to do this on 4th or 5th take; would’ve completely changed the tone here. As it is, it’s a secret f-- you to Khan.
@@psquared75 I dunno, but this is according to Nick Meyer telling the story. He said Deforrest and Leonard usually got it on the first take, but Shatner got better the more he did it because he’d get bored with it and quit “acting”.
I was 9yo when I saw this in the theater with my mom. One of my favorite memories. What a great scene from such a fantastic film. Ricardo Montalban was so intense in that role.
This is my favorite movie of all time. As an adult, when I watch it, my inner computer scientist says “a 5 digit prefix code could be brute force cracked by an Apple ][ from 1980 in probably less than a second.” But… the actors’ committed performances, and (even more so) the brilliance of James Horner’s first major movie score make this whole movie a masterpiece.
“Ah you remember? I can’t help but to be touched. I of course remember you.” “ But I wanted you to know first, who it was, who had beaten you.” Some great quotes from TWOK.
Except when Spock reestablished warp capability and Bones tell Jim he better get down here ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eVIt0DYKssI.htmlsi=Qa5eGoPWQ-6WyGWt
Think of how flowing and seamless the dialogue and writing is. This entire movie is a testament to perfect writing and flow. It's why it's still a GOAT movie.
The music was so amazing. Once I got to here the Los Angeles Philharmonic performance soundtrack, and it’s entirety, and it was so amazing as a young child
"Perhaps I'm not as stupid as I am ugly!" "I gave the "kill" gesture..." "You gave the "we're dead" gesture and I was agreeing. Like I know where the "hold" button is."
My older brother was telling me how much of a big deal it was that she was on Star Trek it was like one of the biggest things ever I really wish she would have been able to return for part 3 even though the part was kind of small but we needed her I would have loved to see her throughout the series at least a couple more times guest appearance is here or there she was amazing
Yeah, there are two of our crew still alive….Walter Koenig and George Takei! All these other actor”s live on in the old series(from:the late ⏰ 1960”s,too!).
This one clip has so many great elements. The slow push on Khan in the captains chair surrounded by his people. The handing of William Shatner on the "here it comes" line. The closeup as he says the word "fire". Brilliant.
I was doing geology fieldwork in Wales and wasn't even expecting this movie when it was advertised in a small town theatre. Brilliant. Imagine how shocked I was when Spock died.
I've seen the scene a million times and it still never gets old. It's the greatest nine minutes in star trek history. I don't say that out of nostalgia I just believe it to be a fact. Not to mention james horner's music is just some of the best music i've ever heard in a Star Trek film When I was a kid I had a diecast metal toy of the enterprise and a Diecast metal toy of the reliant. I had many epic battles. Thank you for this great upload.
General Oder 12 "If a vessel has not responded the hails go to red alert and arm your weapons." Kirk did not do that that's why Khan had the advantage.
I never was into Star Trek, whether on tv or the movies. Though when I read and heard about this particular one and how the writers, director and producer went back to view all the original Star Trek tv episodes and decided on the selection of this specific one due to its characters, etc. also the original “villain” Richardo Montaban was returning to reprise his role of the original character, I was intrigued to see the movie, because I am a big Richardo Montaban fan. After seeing it I was glad I did! For it was surely the very best Star Trek movie “ever”! I didn’t have to see any of the other Star Trek movies after that, because I knew none would compare to Star Trek The Wrath of Khan! I got so caught up with this specific movie and its storyline, etc. that it made me look and find and see the specific Star Trek episode that it was all based on…”Space Seed”.
Kirk screwed up not raising the shields according to general order #24, a court marshal offense/violation! Then when he sent the prefix code to override control of the Reliant, after finding out the ship was hijacked, addition commands should have been immediately sent to shut down all systems and to go to minimum life support.
Agreed but the rebuttal to the appropriate course of action is that if he had done that the movie wouldn't have been nor would the events of Search for Spock or The Voyage Home occurred and if you really want to picky Kirk wouldn't have been in a position for the retrieval of George and Gracie to save Earth. So, an argument could be made that Kirk's hesitation saved Earth.
The soundtrack for these Star Trek movies is consistently awesome! It really pumps up the tension. Modern movie soundtracks are so lame compared to these older movies.
I was in shock when I first saw this because this is also the 5 digit number to our P.O. Box for our family owned company in west Seattle since 1962. When I saw the movie and it was 16309…I was like, we are getting SO much mail after this… it never came. No one else made the connection.
Ricardo Montalban, what a wonderful actor. And his protrayal of Khan is one of the great performances ever seen on screen. The dynamic between him and Shatner's Kirk was palpable.
So every Federation starship has a public-facing API that allows another ship to lower its shields using a 5-digit decimal code? Yeah, you would definitely want that. (Still love the movie.)
I'm just going to assume that the code automatically changes after a single botched attempt, because otherwise the whole point is ridiculously stupid. I note that it was never mentioned again in any movie or series franchise.
No. Not at all what happened. Khan had to give him access to Reliant's computer and then Spock slaved Enterprise's command console to it like a wireless keyboard and lowered the shields.
The seeds for this wonderful movie were honestly planted not by the story of the Botany Bay, but by “Balance of Terror”. That excellent episode’s DNA is all over this feature.
