I'm so happy that the mavens at RU-vid decided that I wanted to see your channel! As an American I am fascinated by the variety of autos that you bring back to life... you have a big fan in Alabama, USA!
Ah now come on, be nicer than that. He's got 3 weeks work experience at least. Getting that Panhard alive again convinced me Ben has more than 2 weeks work experience 😂
I was around 7 years old when I used to see one walking to the shops with my mum in the 70's. Was brown in colour. I loved the look of it, I still do. That and a bubble car just stood out from anything else I used to see on the road. What a beauty. Thank you for saving her mate 👌
Thanks for fixing up the Scimitar SE-5 Smartly designed and good looking coupes are non-existent today as far as new vehicles. Brits built really good cars, that's the truth.
Looking good, the further you step back the better she looks, a blind man would love to see it. Just joking mate, if I lived in the UK I might even be tempted to snap it up, rip the body off rebuild chassis, rebuild motor and repaint and re-upholster.
Yep..... Capri is a beauty ❤ Dad had 2, i had a 1.6 as well but i stripped it for resto and then scrapped it because it was in pieces for years. Great times😂
It may have done your head in in many ways, but one thing more than anything made up for that - just remember when you first turned the key and she fired right up! That alone is reason to forgive it's other troubles. She looks grand compared to what she was, and just so great to see her running around the countryside like that. I hope she found a loving new home.
Great job Ben. She’s a rough and ready, rattly old hector but you saved her for the next owner and she looks well now. Another one saved from certain death so, a good job done. Looking forward to what’s next.
The issue with seized wipers was common on minis. The solution is to remove the wiper blades. Disconnect the worm from the motor. Then pull the inner from the outer at the wiper motor, it should come out with a bit of twisting and pulling. Clean the worm and re- grease. Reassemble . Usually the are like new unless the cogs under the wiper spindles have worn, (floppy wiper arms) in which case, they can be rotated 180 degrees from their original positions (mark them at the point the worm comes out) and you have new teeth in the spindles operating. Only costs a bit of grease and 30 minutes of time. This is an excellent candidate for a full body of restoration, for someone who knows how strip and paint fibreglass bodies. It should restore like a new car.
Why do I have a tear in my eye watching the final minutes of your video on one screen and the final 2 minutes of the ebay ad at £1950. Hope you got what you needed. 😪
Fantastic car one of my all time favourites. Thank you for all your efforts and with your channel it's really great fun. I am looking forward to seeing the next project that you hid really well on the trailer , blue and white, Vauxhall Droopsnoot, Mk1 Cava/Manta/Cheve etttte thing ....
I love this episode ❤ your family is so cute 😍 I have to say you completely changed my mind on reliants. I didn't really like them before, but she is beautiful!
That’s the main grudge l have against the British motor industry, we always got the shitty end of the stick, Australia, South Africa et al got their versions of Granada’s Carlton’s senators cortinas capris asconas etc with v8’s , when we got smoky old pintos and v6’s that weren’t fit to prop the scrapyard gate open when new. Boils my piss it does mate .
As always a great video Ben. So glad you decided to go with the Scimitar, it would have been such a waste to go for spares. You've done most of the work to get it driving, with a little more no doubt it would pass an MOT, (not sure if due to it's age it needs one, but I'd have one done just to check legal road worthiness). If I bought it, sadly I don't have the money or the room, I'd use it as a daily driver, restoring it as I go. What a grand old motor, looking forward to the next video, don't be too long 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers Steve I'm both glad and sad I can't keep it to do more on a later date but needs must! New big video out next Friday and a couple of little updates in-between I think 👍👍👍
wow! beautiful car and very well done work getting it out on the streets again! i have to say that i have enjoyed this 2 hour video. Yes, i saw the full video =) im looking forward to the next project! // a swedish wierd car entusiast =)
@@tastyclassics yeah! But i have some French wierd cars aswell. Simca 1508 GT, Renault 18 diesel stationwagon. 1 of 6 left in Sweden. and som other project cars 😂
that really was a great video. nice that your family came down to see you, and they seemed happy to be there supporting you. good for selling the scimitar, hopefully it will either be restored or just fixed up and driven for a few more years. personally i like the format of, find a car sitting for years, wash it, get it running, basic sevice, any little jobs at a standard just to get through the mot then sell and let someone enjoy driving it.
@@tastyclassics it truly did mate yeah was pretty inspired that l thought, especially the way you went for a body colour so it looked like ghost stripes. The only other option l could think of as l was watching along was to Matte black the bonnet like a mach1 and do the headlight bezels to match , but on reflection your idea was far more sympathetic and subtle and certainly the right thing to do for that car . Good on you mate 🙏🏻
I'm so pleased to see you get her going so well! The sound of the engine reminds me of an old Ford capri 3 litre v6 my first hubby owned .love your channel! You need your other half to de-spider stuff for you, us girls aren't as scared of them lol your family are lovely and hanging baskets look great 😊
Just finished watching this last episode on the Scimitar . Brilliant viewing Ben. Enjoying this series of old car restorations/revives. Best thing on RU-vid for me currently 👍👏. Your success is well deserved. Keep them coming
I love the way you explain what your doing ben am glad i found your channel i used to love buying the old cars from the 70s i once bought a mk.10 jaguar i got it for £40.the hydraulics needed to be sorted my friend done that for me ❤
Another fabulous feature film! I really enjoy watching all your videos especially these longer films! The Scimitar looks lovely & I can’t wait to watch the Panhard!! Keep up the great work!!
Love it. My Dad had two of these and they were uber-cool at the time and they remain so today. We drove from Menton to beyond Nice and up towards Aux en Provacance before he noticed the fuel was dropping rather noticeably. When he stopped as a petrol station he spotted we had been travelling at 70 foe the whole distance in second! The car was smooth as you like....but thirsty! It was an automatic ..
The Police have been pulling loads of classics here in leicester. When i questioned them on their activities they said the number one reason for stopping cars was their poor paint. Not so with your gorgeous Scimitar !!! Well done Mate
Yep. Just as I'd hoped. I had a Talbot Horizon 1.3LS once. Believe me, at 17 years of age when all your mates have got MK2 Escorts and Sierra 2.0GTSs, you get quite a lot of stick - until you tighten your ohv valve clearances down spec about 40% and get a right load more horsepower! (as long as engine's hot or just reasonable guess, if not) Don't forget, with an ohv, you have twice as much clattering force due to effectively double clearances - one for the crank to pushrod, and one at the pushrod to rocker - than an ohc engine. So, rest on those feeler blades a bit more than you do with an overhead camshaft engine!!! Trust me, it's safe as long as you don't overdo it! My Talbot was absolutely beautiful and I wish I still had it now! Looks like it's just been hammered wider, that No.1 (2?) pot... Magic worked again! 🙂
Love the V6 Essex, owned a few 3.0 Capri's, the starter motors distinctive noise takes me right back to the first ride in my dad's 72 3000E. You'd think Scimitar prices would be higher when you look at the rise of 3.0 Capri's.
It is surprising the Scimitars are very well put together cars, one day I'd love to do a Capri for the channel but even the ones in hedges are mega money !
@@tastyclassics come back to the late 80's with me, a nice 3.0S was £800 and the Autotrader was full of them. Now I can buy a decent Porsche Cayman for less than a 3.0 Capri.
I used to work on one of these in my teens wen me and my dad ran a garage together used to love the ford v6 but hated doing the tappets on it but u either love or h8 the scimitar good job
It's good to see an honest rescue where you say ground up resto for someone else . Which it is worth doing for an enthusiast. I would have black plasti dipped the bonnet as I did to my triumph 2500 to cover a few scars. Still going through your channel playlists🤘🦖
Well done on a great job, great to see someone so honest and likeable. I’ve just been gifted a 1972 scimitar that’s been stood for 10 years or so. Wish me luck, on the plus side I’ve got welding and bodywork experience 👍
your content what you put on RU-vid about cars is very interesting and very detailed and you can learn a lot of the way you explain things how to do cars could you watch you for hours and hours and hours and I think somebody like you can bring all cars back to life he's very interesting I think a lot more people should do it and respect to the older cars like you do and I'm the same as you and I like the Austin ambassador because my dad had not Austin ambassador the same was one you put on you did on RU-vid watch you restored very good and row interested Michael Sydney lawrenceon😎
Early to mid 80s my mates dad had a GTE or as he liked to call it ' the shooting brake ' and i though it was so cool as a 10/11yo that it separate seats in the back with the cool armrest! As a 52yo old gadgie i have a soft spot for the GTE Plastic pig!
Really enjoyed this one…. And I’m surprised how you’ve turned it around on a budget. Just shows you can own a classic, enjoy it and be affordable… even more relevant at the moment
I came to see if anyone had made a joke about your mum and aunt being "tasty classics" 😂😂😂 turns out I'm the only arsehole here 🤣 great video Ben! The channel is still gaining pace at a good rate 👍🏻
New subscriber here. So.. i decided to play a game on this one. Every time you sat "you know!" or "you know what I mean!" I have to take a swig of (very strong!) Vody n coke.. 1:25 in and I'm spannered 😂😂. Inall drunken seriousness i am lovin your work.
You are wicked smart to know when to stop the process of restoring the SE5 Scimitar. It is in fact, running and driving, the next person can continue the repair/restoration process. This car would be a great candidate for a period, say 1970's movie/TV show running and driving prop, etc, etc. Example; Dr. Who, the Moody Blues, The Avengers, Man from UNCLE, Top Gear, Wheeler Dealers, James Bond, etc.
I had to stop watching VGG as his humour was too repetitive and starting to grate. A good example of engaging with viewers is Mustie 1 who fixes up all kinds of motorised junk on his channel.
Loved this Its something i've wanted to do for years, but have never got back Did a few mini's years ago, early 80's, but never got to do any more. I had a 3 litre granada ghia years ago, and always wanted a ghia coupe Maybe a suggestion for you, granada 3.0 ghia coupe, that would be nice Love the videos
Another car rescued from the crusher.. Mind you when you got that non fireing cylinder sorted, It would have paid you to have all six plugs out, clean and gap them and before refitting set the valve clearances on all 6 cylinders. . She'd have ran much sweeter and quieter.. Still, it wasn't me trying to work with frozen hands in sub zero temperatures !
Loved your video, your videos are always funny, but yet informative to watch and I love the fact that you don't choose the common cars that people would normally opt for but you choose the little more obscure ones. Love your work and carry on with your excellent chanel.
There is a posh house i pass on my commute and they have had a yellow scimitar on their drive for years. Im sure it is used even now. It is joined these days by a gold maserati. Im pretty sure that is a sign of what we call "old money" People so posh, they dont need a brand new car to show off in. They just drive what they love.
Well done Ben you belong to the same school of restoration as me - get it on the road and presentable then drive it. The son in law of the chap who lived opposite us when I was a kid back in the 60's, bought a new one of these. iirc you could buy it with sheepskin seat covers. I was always envious of it when he brought it round. Then in 1971 he swapped it for one of the last Morris Minor Countryman built! Must have noticed a big difference in the performance! I wonder which would be worth the most today?
